  1. Yeah, a bit - explorer windows taking more time than usual to open, for example. Like I said, though, this system is very much atypical (P4 matched with 128MB ram (!) on a dodgy network), so I wouldn't particularly trust it as representative. And it seems to have cleared up a bit now anyhow.

Could you give me a little more information about your system ? What did you have before installing 3.0a1 ? Did you have 2.1a ? Any other update pack ? IE version ?

  2. Anyhow, all seems fine so far here. The only comments I would make are that I get "newer file exist" notifications for files relating to HTML Help files (hhupd.dll (?), ltirc.dll, ltss.dll and one other), so I ended up keeping the existing files. I didn't get the chance to check the different version infos, since I'm at work, but maybe this is something else that could be updated?

Thanks. I will check it. Maybe there is a newer HTML Help update.

Windows does seem marginally more sluggish post-install, but that's pretty much unquantifiable, and it's hard to judge on a system like this one anyhow, so I'd maybe see whether anyone else has a similar experience.

    When ? After rebooting ?

  3. After installing uSP 2.1a I do encounter a problem:

When I insert CD in one of my drives and immediately open My Computer the whole system freezes (incl. mouse cursor) until the disc in detected. This also happens when I have Nero launched and insert a CD.

There is also another problem: sometimes when I remove CD from the drive, explorer 'thinks' that it is still inserted -> you can see the contents of the CD which isn't present. OR when I insert another CD I see contents of previous CD. But when I try to access anything on it I get a blue screen and system dies.

I have isolated the problem and it is related to CDVSD.VXD 4.10.2226 which is distributed with uSP.

The problem disappears when I install original CDVSD.VXD 4.10.2222.

The problem occured on 3 different computers on which I have installed uSP.

Thank you very much. I will try to reproduce it. I also should check that if there are other CDVSD.VXD versions such as 2225, 2224 etc.

  4. sleffing, Molecule, thanks for your feedback.

Yes, uSP 3.0 contains unofficial updates.

Now 3.0 Alpha 1 is almost ready [Alpha releases will focus only to collect currently best updates]. There are only 2 problems:

    - Although I added required Windows Update information into the registry. Q891711, and Q918547 are still showing up on the Windows Update. Does anyone know something about it ?

    - "COMCTL32.DLL file cannot start" problem during uninstallation of Adaptec ASPI or Boot/Shutdown logos.

Some new features like USB thumb drives support, Enable48bitLBA will be included in the next alpha/beta release.

  5. The Copy2GB patch is not necessary. The 634 version of the shell32.dll patch already fixes the copy 2gb bug. I tried the copy2gb patch a while ago. It caused unusual behavior on my computer. It also changed the buttons, which I didn't like. About the Enable48bitLBA, the readme says that if used on smaller drives, it might cause data corruption. If these patches must be included, maybe an option not to install them should be avaliable.

    Thank for the info. :thumbup

  6. Thank you all for your nice welcome messages.

@about IE5 updates: They are a part of OS. Some users don't update IE at all (like 98lite and/or Firefox, Opera users). I think these updates can be still useful for them. BTW, I will think about it.

@about NUSB: I think it still contains WinME files. I don't want to add WinME files into USP.

@about Copy2GB, Enable48bitLBA: Copy2GB is in the 3.0 Alpha 1. But I am not sure about Enable48bitLBA, because data loss possibility is very dangerous. I want to make sure that it is working successful on different systems.

  7. Yay! Glad to see you back Gape :) And great news on the new version

How complete will this update make 98, compared to something like the updates in autopatcher?

    Wrayal

USP is a "service pack" that fixes operating system problems. It doesn't try to add 3rd party software. It will be not different from older USP versions. It will not contain any Windows ME files, but with this 3.0 release it contains unofficial fixes.

I don't have enough information autopatcher, because I was away for a long time.

By the way, I will release an alpha version soon, there will be beta version(s) and release candidate(s). I hope all users who needs/likes the USP will help me to improve this new release.

    Thanks.

  9. Hello all,

This is a quick post, I will write again frequently in next days.

I am extremely sorry for my absence. Now, I am back. I had some job, school, and health problems, but I am OK now, I solved all my problems, and I will continue to release new updates.

But there are lots of new works during my absence, so I need your patience again.

[Anyone who made some works after 2.1a, you can share them with me, if you want.]

    Thank you.

    Gape.

  10. Can we expect a new version from 2.1A soon?

maybe in the next few months. it's up in Gape's hands to release a new version but right now he's currently very busy.

Yes, sorry, I'm very busy nowadays. On the other hand, I have almost completed a beta version. I hope I will release it asap.

  11. OK, well, I need to reinstall everything - I have a bad HDU and a replacement is on the way, SO....

If anyone here wants me to test things, now's the time.... Tell me what, how, where and why and I'll do it.

    Let me know.

    * Check that is your BIOS latest?

    * You must install Intel Chipset Software Utility, and IAA 2.3. (Your chipset should support IAA 2.3, I got your "System Information" email, thanks.)

  12. I have IAA 2.2.2 (2.3, the newest, didn't work) VGA driver 6.7 (the latest), the INF update for the 820 chipset, and the remainder are the newest from Dell, some that may have been superceded by installation from the Intel ones.

You need IAA 2.3. Why it didn't work? Before installing it, you have to install latest Intel Chipset Software Utility, firstly.

I may have missed it if it's not any of those (I have reviewed those). IS THERE a 'guide or manual' that at least deatils the files that are changed ans why they are?

I also noted that the update crashed Norton System Works 2003, before I rebooted...

    I mean this: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=38193

As already stated in this guide, you must close all open programs. Please, read carefully "Installation Guide" part of this guide.

  13. This endless loop of registry checking is not unofficial pack's fault. It is a bug of Q311561 update (which is a OFFICIAL update, and there is exactly same version in the unofficial pack). Please, try to google. Even without unofficial service pack, this Q311561 update causes mentioned problem on some systems.

One of the reasons of this loop is bad memory modules. I highly recommend that you should check your ram modules with a program such that MemTest. Could you write your detailed hardware list ?

Also make sure that you installed latest version of your mainboard and vga drivers (especially IAA).

Did you read installation guide of the unofficial pack ?

You think OFFICIAL service packs are perfect ? IMO, they're not. For example, my old machine (which has old VIA Apollo VPX chipset), has serious problems with XP Service Pack 2.

  14. Do you mean this no longer maintained project?: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/...dos/udma/devel/ ?

Have you any experience with combining this driver and Windows 98 SE?

Do you know about any benchmark results comparing this driver and ESDI_506.PDR?

I will try how it works on my 915 board. Do you know about any good utility for measuring disk transfer rate? For native devices I use HDTach, but it does not work for disks in DOS compatibility mode.

    In fact, I mean XDMA.

I have not any experience yet, but I'm going to try it. I think you can use HDTach to comparison. I should work in compatibility mode, too.

  15. 1. Win98 SE SP already contains an option to install Adaptec ASPI layer 4.60 (1021).

    2. ESDI_506.PDR does not support disks bigger than 137GB, if you want to use 200GB disk, you have to

    a) use the first 137GB only by defining partitions to fit fully below the 137GB border (and lose 63GB), or

    B) use vendor specific IDE driver if exists, or

    c) use commercial 137GB+ patch for ESDI_506.PDR, or

    d) use add-on IDE controller board.

    e) Delete ESDI_506.PDR :)
