  1. dude, that's awesome; sometimes the older electronics are more stable and longer lasting than today's cheaper component driven systems.

The PSU I used and have been using, and it's almost 20 years old (15-16), but I dare you to say it's not any good. :P It was built in "the good old days".

It's been through hell and back, and still works 110% :thumbup

  2. I did not went through all Pages of this Thread (but mostly), but can someone confirm that the China Cable sometimes fail? On the PCB of the Cable is 2303HX Chip, maybe that is of help?

Sorry for my English! I surely will ask more questions after the USB->TTL converter arrived :-)

    Thanks!

Salami, we're glad that you found this post. I believe that there were reports of bad CA-42 cables but it does not look like that was the cable you purchased. The CA-42 cables from China are usually made with the prolific board. I believe 2303 is the most common. Have you also installed a driver for your 2303HX chip? That might be part of the problem.

Anyway, if you can get a hold of a CA-42 cable, we can try to help or make sure that you have installed a driver for your particular cable. They do not work out of the box.

  3. when we plug just the cable CA-42 to the USB of the mobo there is no appereance of the device (Ca-42) in the device manager or the sound

I don't own an original or clone CA-42 cable myself, but it is widely known

that the clones don't respond the same as original cables do.

Apparently your clone-cable really needs to see a phone attached for it to

function or get initialized/seen by the system.

You could try to use another USB-port (not on a hub), preferably one that

is directly attached to the motherboard (at the back) like Mundy suggests

or maybe even on another system, but it's just a long shot.

If you can get your hands on a computer with a real on-board COM-port you

    could use the MAX232 option.

If that's not an option you get yourself one of the other USB->TTL-RS232

    solutions around.

    Greetz,

    Peter.

I'm not so sure about the problems reported on the clone CA-42 cables. I have a clone made in China that worked fine. I think there might be "human error" involved. Anyway, I am one who used a Chinese made CA-42 cable with success.

  4. To VideoRipper : what I had mean is that when we plug just the cable CA-42 to the USB of the mobo there is no appereance of the device (Ca-42) in the device manager or the sound (when you plug a USB stick). There are some CA-42 wich will trigger their appearence in the device manager when the tool (Nokia phone) is connected to the CA-42.

If my memory serves me correctly, my computer recognizes the CA-42 cable when the USB is plugged in even when nothing is on the other end once the driver has been properly installed. I think on my desktop, I was able to install the driver first and then the computer connected the driver to the CA-42 cable. On my laptop, I had to first connect the CA-42 to the usb port and then it prompted me for the driver. Either way, I do not believe the CA-42 cable was connected to my hdd.

Are you saying that your computer does not recognize it at all? Try a different USB port that has a direct connection, some USB ports are part of hubs that are internal to the computer.

Do you have the driver, not the Nokia suite, for your CA-42 cable?

  5. I have a hard drive Seagate (from IBM Server)

    P1060135.JPG

As you can tell from this image you uploaded, it does not have the SD15 firmware but some IBM version of it. I'd recommend that you contact IBM to see if they have a solution.

Of course, you could try a CA-42 cable or a RS232-TTL converter, but I'd call IBM first or go to their support website.

I have not seen anyone else with your particular drive on this thread. It might be worth starting a new one. As I said in an earlier post, different firmware, all bets are off since we cannot test it from our end.

  6. Your error codes are not what we have seen here. what is the firmware on your hdd? it should say SD15 otherwise, all bets are off on this solution.

OK, so when you go past these steps on a ST31500341AS and you keep seeing lots of these "InitiateMarkPendingReallocateRequest for disc_lba: XXXXX" then what can you do?

    Rst 0x20M

    (P) SATA Reset

    PASSPackage Verified

    No Phy: Staggered spin bypass

    InitiateMarkPendingReallocateRequest for disc_lba: 00001273

    ASCII Diag mode

    F3 T>

I've cleared the SMART status, the G-List but it would keep reallocating the bad sectors how can i get to my data?

  7. All,

I wanted to encourage all new members to read carefully the first post of this thread. I think we are now observing a phenomenon that is unfortunate. People with different versions of the firmware or with slightly different symptoms are coming to this site and trying the fix and when it doesn't work, they are posting for a solution. I am not technically capable enough to help folks with different HDDs and different firmware. I can only speak of my own experience in successfully trying this fix.

I would encourage you all to try this solution if you have the bad SD15 firmware and the correct 7200.11 HDD from Seagate. I feel for you that your HDD is not working properly but I'm not sure we can be of much help if yours does not fall into the correct specs.

  8. So I'm going to need to remove the drive, yes? What is the circuit board you can see, is that LaCie or Seagate? Will it come out ok, because both the power and USB data cable of the external HD go into the side where that circuit board is...

    Sorry! :blushing:

    Greg.

yes, you will have to remove the drive. You should see a separate PCB attached to the HDD once you remove it from the enclosure. The board that is visible should be LaCie's. Of course, you will not know until you actually disassemble the enclosure.

  9. I am just wondering if simply placing these jumpers directly into the hard disk ports as showed above will work? I will use electrical tape around the majority of the connector so that they don't make contact during the process, but is placing these connectors straight on the seagate fine?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

yes, that is exactly how I did it. I didn't even have any electrical tape on them. but to be safe you should.

  10. When I enter the serial number, Seagate tells me that I can proceed with Step 4, so I understand that it's really affected.

    good.

    Perfect. It sounds normally.

I'm sure it's the problem associated with SD15 firmware. One day it was working properly, the following day it was not recognized by BIOS (it even caused another Seagate not to be recognized). It also made POST to last around a minute (much longer than usual) in two different computers (I think this is another symptom).

Also, the disc spun but I couldn't hear the heads afterwards (I'm not sure about this). Now I can hear the heads moving, BIOS shows "IDE Hard Disk" and my doubt is what i365 would have done to it. Maybe it's in a state to be easily recovered by them but impossible with the known methods... :realmad:

I understand that "IDE Hard Disk" is not the way your disks were returned from i365 then.

that's right. but I had the BSY problem which made the hdd not recognizable at all. I'd try the solution. You really have nothing to lose unless you want to pay the 700 Euros.

  11. @jengitsme

My experience confirms yours with i365. They do not appear to be interested in fixing the problem anymore. I ended up having to fix it myself, backed it up and then sent it in for exchange with Seagate since it also failed the short DST test.

I'm very disappointed in i365 for their lack of desire to help. They only want money.

Thank you for confirming what I suspected.

I think i365 (Netherlands) have just done the same to me. I sent them a 7200.11 500GB drive with BSY failure and they told me to pay 775€ to recover the data (then less than 500€ if I was not in a hurry). I asked them to return it to me.

Now I have a drive with something like the LBA0 problem.

I'm new here and I have one question: Does the LBA0 problem show the correct model number in BIOS?

My drive now shows itself as "IDE Hard Disk" when booting, and 0GB size in BIOS (it spins and I can hear the heads moving).

Is this the typical behaviour? Should it be as easy to fix as you are talking here?

    Thank you very much!

XPG, I'm sorry to hear of your experience. Your evaluation of the situation makes me hesitate in giving you any firm answers. In most cases, I believe those with the LBA0 problem had no issues with the drive being recognized properly by the BIOS. The only problem they had was that it was recognized as a null sized HDD which means, not useable. In your case, since it is not even being recognized by BIOS properly, I am not certain.

Have you verified that you have the problem firmware using the serial number checker on the seagate website? I think I have a link a few posts earlier. If so, then I think you should be able to go through the LBA0 fix to see if that corrects anything for you.

The HDD will spin up like normal and should not have any funny sounds associated with it. If it has other sounds, then you are most likely also dealing with other problems. As it was in my case which is why I returned it after backing up all the data ASAP.

    Keep us updated on this.

  12. Hello,

I'm having problems with my Touchsmart PC I can't boot it up since it can't find the C drive. My PC has a Seagate 7200.11. Does this fix work in a HP Touchsmart PC?

If your PC has the faulty model and firmware, then yes, you will also have this problem. You can take the serial number of your seagate hdd and go to the seagate website and type in the serial number.

    go here http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931&NewLang=en

and choose #2 "click here to use the serial number check utility"

it will tell you if it is one of the affected models. that is the sure way to know if it is this problem. btw, it doesn't matter the brand of your pc, if they used the faulty seagate hdd, then you will have this problem.

  13. Hello,

I'm new here, this is a great thread but I have a problem, I have done exactly what has been said on here regarding unbricking my seagate drive, however when I come to switch off the power then switch back on, I cannot talkle to the drive via Hyperterminal, I can only talk if I unplug my drive a second time, then of course the commands don't work.

I'm using a computer with xp, a nokia CA-42 data cable so using the right stuff, don't know what is the matter.

Has anyone else had this problem?

    Ian

You're the 2nd person in recent days to say the exact same thing. I have 2 questions.

    1. How are you powering your sata hdd? Using your old computer?

    2. Are you making sure that it is sharing the same ground?

When I did it, I was using a the desktop with a different hdd and the CA-42 cable. They were sharing the same ground.

  14. Ok...So, I have this problem, just found this thread, I've read several different versions of the instructions, even the ones on the google page.

BUT, my sata power cable I think for the harddrive? all the sections are black, and there's only four wires, whereas the ones pictured have six I believe with easily distinguishable colors.

I also don't have a serial port, so i'm assuming I'll have to use the nokia thingy for usb.

But the instructions seem like they're for advanced DIY'ers, I am far and away, an amateur. So is it possible to get the steps in laymens terms X:

Also perhaps a list of links to everything I would need to buy that I might not have? A retail list would be amazing.

Or perhaps there's a simpler way just to get the data off the drive? I care little for the drive it self, There's just a few folders I wish to save, maybe 10~20 gb's.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated, the 'bricking' of this drive has made the computer unusable[i'm saving up to build a whole new computer, didn't feel like spending the money on a replacement harddrive for this outdated one.

OH, also a list of programs I might need to do it? XP was on the harddrive so I'm not really sure what all I need.

see the post from VideoRipper. I would suggest that you find someone to help you as it seems that this is beyond your technical expertise. Where do you live? Maybe someone local can help. Have you read the first post in this thread?

  15. BSY and the LBA0 problems do not have any beeping sounds associated with them. I'm afraid you now have a different problem.

    hey,

iv'e accidentally turned the off the drive before getting the messages back from "m0,2,2,,,,,22".

now, when i powering up the drive, its making weird sounds of "beep, beep, beep".

did i totally bricked my drive? or there is a way back?!

    thanx.

  16. Go to p. 131 and see my post and the pictures to see if you can see what color wires you need. You only need 3 of them, not 4. Hopefully you can make the necessary correlation to the correct wires to your CA-42 cable. How are you connecting the cable wires to the actual HDD? I hope you are using some jumper pins or something like that to make a firm connection. Let me know if the pictures are of any help.

    Hello!

i tried it 2 days now to connect it succesfully and the ONLY combination i found is (pcb facing up)

    red,black,white,blue

with this combination ctrl+z works, else just nothing or garbage letters!

BUT with this combination the cable i'm using only get's recognised by the pc if the pcb board is disconnected, once i'm at the part where you reconnect the pcb and turn off the drive, after 10 seconds on again the cable won't be recognised anymore! just nothing... ctrl+z won't work and i can't put in the m0,2,2,,,,,22 command

  17. Yes, I tried the whole process of BSY fix by inserting card spinning down removing card and spinning up HDD etc around 10 times, but every time in the next step where I press N1 at F3 1> prompt, it just halts there with blinking cursor, the next prompt doesn't appear. I've tried searching about this SMART erase with N1 command, but unfortunately not much information is available. Any clue to what might be wrong? Thanks.

If it isn't working even though you have gone through the procedure exactly as it is listed here, then the only conclusion I can come up with is that you have a different issue or more issues than just the bsy problem listed here.

  18. The answer is the one with the screw in the middle. You also might not be waiting long enough for the hdd to spin down after you initially plug it in. I got that type of error because I was trying to enter commands while it was still spinning up.

I'm very close on this, I figured out that the USB-Serial chip needs powering, and the HDD board needs connecting to the PSU as well, I can talk to the drive with hyperterminal, but keep getting LED:000000CE FAddr:00280569

    LED:000000CE FAddr:00280569 when I enter Z after the /2 command.

I see there are two sets of contacts/pins between the PCB and the HDD case, a rectangular set with a screw hole in the middle, located near the top left of the drive in the picture, and a set of three wire contacts that lead to the motor in the middle. Which set do I put the insulator in between, or do I put it between both sets?

    P3280615.jpg

  19. Consider going through the procedure again.

    Seagate Drive : ST3500320AS , Firmware : SD15

    Problem: BSY

My 500GB HDD initially had BSY problem. I successfully completed the steps till the point where I have to type "N1" for a SMART erase. But it just hangs there when I enter N1. The cursor keeps blinking and the next prompt doesn't appear, I kept waiting for 20 mins but still the same. What might be wrong?

After this, I tried connecting back the hdd with sata cable to check if it works. This time it is recognized in BIOS, but doesn't show up in My Computer. Opening Device Manager>Disk Management pops up a window as seen in the snap below:

    Direct Image Link

    sw7rza.jpg

When I press OK, it pops up a Dialog Box saying "Incorrect Function".

Later I tried patching up the firmware update from seagate. Even though the drive detect software from seagate doesn't recognize the HDD, however running the firmware patch during start up detects it, and Says: "Model Matched, Firmware not matched" even though the patch is the correct one: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/news.jsp?DocId=207951

  20. Gavilan,

I'm sorry I missed the 3rd photo. However, the reason why I asked you to take pictures of both sides of the USB board is b/c I cannot see what color wires are at the various solder points. In your two photos, are you sure you are taking a picture of the same board on both sides? I ask b/c in both photos, the red wire is soldered to the photo side but there are soldered to different sides and different points on the board, which cannot be since there is only 1 red wire in both photos. I hope you understand why I am unable to help you right now.

Please post a photo of both sides of the USB board of the same cable, not of different ones. They are not wired the same so you need to show me photos of the same cable but of both sides of the USB board.
