I use his Maple theme, because I used to use it in 2000Pro and XP Pro but he tried and they don't work in 10.

Classic Theme Restorer Extension for Firefox also helps and if you still have it,

the Plus Pack that came with Win 98, the icons, pointers, cursors and stuff

still work, so far, I haven't tried them in 10 but I don't like 10, would rather use 7 64bit or Linux if I have to.

Though you want to change the Logon screen, I just stayed with the stock because my "MicroBorg:'98"

    startup screen wouldn't look right.

  2. So true!

I use other browsers for specific thing. IE is used for Microsoft related websites only... Chrome is used primarily for Google related sites like Youtube.

That is generally the doctrine I follow, IE for sevenforums/tenforums Chrome, when I want to post on YT.

However, Opera Portable only has four [grocery flyers] tabs open and is really slow to load but I don't always up date to the latest when I have time to read the newspapers that come on Thursday of every week. FF is my main viewer, Java disabled unless a site really needs it, then disable and do scans.

classic shell and some manual reg changes do trigger false-positive within stupid MBAM

and not as hijack but as trojan - lulz

For that you gotta remember what actions you did and give the appropriate exemptions, right?

  3. I am not concerned about the 'file missing' entries, as I'm running a customised Win7[ultimate],when left alone, my Win7 runs smoothly, more problems are caused by bad updates, rather than zeroredirect1, and as for the WMP entry, I use KMPlayer on the desktops, VLC Portable elsewhere.

  4. Fellas, don't fight, all I gotta do is stay away from the site of the original infection.

It is adware, though revealed it knew my I.P. and the name of my town, amateur tricks, really.

Anyhooo... the site you quoted in your pinned post has no pointers to the kit but does to something I've already installed over the weekend.

    http://www.lunarsoft.net/software/malwarebytes-anti-malware-2-1-6

    :thumbup

  5. Well, it won't be seeking

     megaupload.com

    anytime soon.

it was only doing its adware thing when i opened the MegaManager downloader, probably

during the login page, which I usually ignore, jumping to the downloads tab. plus every 10 minutes.

that has been replaced with FDM.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/anti_malware_toolkit.html

hasn't had an update since 2010 but will try it out tomorrow, but the other stuff

    says I'm clean now.

I'm not a noob, just forgot a lot of stuff since 1980, like if you don't use it, you lose it.

Do that other stuff tomorrow, gotta make supper....

  6. I have administrator rights, but the command box doesn't look like yours.

Since the Atari ST I've lost command line skills, doesn't respond to fgrep.

I opened my hosts file in notepad, all 127.0.0.1 no 0.0.0.0 like yours.

    Entries made by spybot S&D

With the antimalware I've downloaded, I think i got rid of it.

Gave AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes Free another chance, lots of 'PUP's

    but no 'PUM's

Got rid of MM and its' integrator extension, using FDM and its' FF integrator now.

    So far, so good.

  7. Depending on the OS you are running suitable tools are usually HijackThis:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/

    and ComboFix:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/

But wouldn't this (specific) set of (manual) instructions do?

    http://www.anvisoft.com/resources/how-to-remove-za-zeroredirect1-com-popups-adware-removal-guide/

Me: think I read it already, will follow link when i have time.

Adwcleaner is said to be detecting and removing it:

    https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

Me: that was the first I tried..no success but may try again tomorrow.

    http://malwaretips.com/blogs/zeroredirect1-com-removal/

    Will read tomorrow.

However make sure (as always) to have a valid backup/recovery solution tested, you never know.

As a side not there are quite a few reports about the Spyhunter thingy to be what I would call a "dangerous" tool, that in more then one case has managed to additionally make a system unbootable, make sure that you have properly removed/uninstalled it.

Me: Spyhunter got the boot after it failed.

    jaclaz

Well, yes, after each failure I un-installed with either AppRemover [targets stubborn A-V ware] or CCleaner's tool.

Wallowing in Poverty, i used up all my drives in this workstation, have nothing to put anything on but my data drives are clean.

The pest is contained in MM, no aberrant behaviour all  afternoon.

Get most of my stuff at MajorGeeks, going down the list.

  8. It is driving me up the wall.

Affecting my favourite download manager {MegaManager} & before you say anything I know Megaupload is dead, saw it in the news, but if you skip the login page and go to the downloads tab, it works as usual.

I liked the simple interface, the speed indicator etc.

Wasted 30 hours on the **** thing, none of the half-dozen or so malware utilities are detecting it, waiting for friggin scans that go nowhere.

Isn't there a tool that would let me plug the name, if i know what the pest is... [it left an URL in a Firefox tab, that is/was blank because of all the other measures I've taken] on MM startup though, it would open a FF window, no toolbar and a bunch of script dialogues [if FF portable wasn't already running, yes i prefer the portable versions]

....then hunt and kill the pest?

Even the much vaunted Malwarebytes couldn't find it.

Spyhunter 4, waited 100 minutes for a scan, didn't find the little bugger, but it found everything else, including my KMSservices (harmless, which i want to be left alone) but at least it lets you uncheck what you want to keep, however, after telling it to remove, it holds you hostage, wants 60 bucks CDN to clean your machine, why don't I just drop trow and bend over? It'd be a lot more honest. My nerves are shot, it usually takes me less than an hour to rid myself of code pests.

My temporary solution was to disable the FF integrator [though a previous test showed it wasn't a problem] in add-ons and un-install MegaManager [but for now i retained the history, which i can dump later] and install Free Download Manager Portable (or just FDM, as referred to in lit) and it's FF integrator, then pray it doesn't fall to the same fate.   Though

    'zeroredirect1.com'

    is still there, embedded.

A previous un-install and re-install of MM didn't work. Thought replacing with a virgin copy would work.

    What do you think?

  9. Interesting thread, I made the jump to W7Ux32 on my birthday(legacy h/w,no 64 bit drivers) and if Resource Monitor is to be believed,

the upper gig of my new 4GiB build is being used by BIOS and hardware I'm happy with that and have enough faith in the construction

of the ADATA 60GiB SSD not to worry about it.

Am I living in a fools paradise?

    :w00t:

  10. OK, latest post aside from mine was August 5.

So have you guys seen this article or don't you care either way?

    http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-warns-windows-xp-users-risk-zero-day-forever-7000019503/

    http://www.sevenforums.com/news/301421-microsoft-warns-windows-xp-users-risk-zero-day-forever.html

Or so much fear fear mongering?

I imagine XP users will do what 2000 & 9x

users have been doing all along, we as the community, just have to point them in the right direction,eh?

  11. Generally speaking, there's no reason not to install them unless the update specifically causes problems in your system (for various reasons like the update being buggy itself or other programs having issues after installing it, etc.), especially if we're talking about a home computer.

Well, I have redundant copies of my own font collection and as i don't use all of them, more aren't needed.

...searching within this topic before i make my main post...

  12. My recommendation for newbs is either just Outpost Firewall 6.5 or for a complete solution

get the Suite ver 7.1 (free) still works on 2000 as is.

Or if you like tinkering get AVG either 7.5 or 8.xx or 9.xx

    and manually update from here:

    http://www.avg.com/ww-en/download-update-2011

Pay attention to the left pane on the page.

    the definition files for 2011, 9 & 8 work in 7.5

but stick to one choice, 7.5 may prompt for update,

ignore, I can't remember how I got rid of nag pop-up

    though.

    Then use the 1.6.x.x version of Spybot S & D , i still use it as i didn't like

the interface of 2.x.x, definition files still work as I'm using the portable version now.

    @

    majorgeeks.com

    sourceforge [sp?]

    &

    filehippo.com

    for these earlier versions.

  13. I have a Geforce GT 620 on my currently built computer at the moment (using windows 7 right now) but I really would like to make it a windows 2000 system, the problem is that the last time I tried it-I couldn't get the thing to install even with Tomaz's XP compatibility mode patch-does anyone know of any drivers for that card that are win2k compatible?

    See my answers here;

NVidia is usually good at backward compatibility, you just might miss some functions of newer versions of the nVidia

control applet/taskbar widget, as suggested, search nVidia manually, use sourceforge or filehippo for an older driver.

Try one of the 175.xx versions to start, then see how far updating will get you.

Try 310.70 instead of the current 320.18 OR

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.16_whql.html

  14. I always try to build with nVidia and if the mobo has a nVidia chipset, so much the better.

This P4 is failing and I have another AMD board waiting in the wings for a case I ordered.

Not frelling around, I went and bought a G-series Seasonic PS [the X-series are still out of my

budget range] plus the cheap Orion in this machine is dropping its voltages, though it has outlived

the expensive Cooler Master it had and died one month out of warranty. I couldn't go without communication

at the time, so waiting for mail-order was out of the question, went to a bricks & mortar. Then I had issues,

after which I unplugged the DVD burner and it stabilised, so either there's a problem with the Philips burner

or it needs more juice from the 12 volt rail. I'm going to Google/Yahoo that but these days at 20 bucks a pop,

went to a new B & M and got a LG OEM for new build.

Even then I won't have a machine to experiment with and try my theory on [abject poverty] not until i save my

pennies (oops, Canada got rid of 'em :w00t: ) nickels and get another G-series Seasonic, only then

will it be my experimenting/spare box, as I have been using the PortableApps suite since it first came out,

then I had to learn how to migrate the Mozilla profile folders and .ini files as I buy new drives all the time.

So would prefer to stay in Windows, as I had to migrate from an Atari ST, a TT with a whopping 256MB

and a 16MB Falcon to Win'98 after there were no more dealers or active user clubs

    any more. :(

While I can go to Linux for a true desktop experience ( been dual-booting 2000 with Mandriva's unique "Flash"

product) the product hasn't seen any upgrading since 2010 and I moved on to PCLinuxOS as they have an

active forum and monthly magazine as well as frequent updating for new hardware as well as backward compatibility.

The main drawback to that is I won't be able to use the PortableApps thumb drives and it is a little bit trickier [more work]

to migrate into and preserve the /home directories, so you can go on from where you left off install to each new install.

Plus will have to retire my favourite TV Capture Cards, which still work under W7,just use the compatibility tab, doesn't work

in VM. Though that's for 2020....by then I would have learned Myth-TV to use with the HDHomerun which I'm adding to the

    first MyHD MDP-130 this summer.

    :D

  15. Again, like the fellow who got 8 gigs and six cores working, this might get me to return to 2000 Pro,

I'd like to see this on a AMD system 'cause right now i don't have a spare system to experiment on.

Currently using a Corporate/Student XP SP3 that doesn't need a key or activation [which I detest].

Though M$ is doing everything they can to destroy the traditional desktop with Metro, and earlier

OSs with VS 2010++, they want to turn our non-activation discs into coasters.

  16. I got Avast 6 working! However, when it finds virus' (which it does, 5 of them) it can't remove them. Clicking remove does nothing. Hmph.

    http://i.imgur.com/H24q6dg.jpg

Now I'm envious, seeing those six cores in 2000/task manager but my MDP-130s have a requirement for DVD playback that the machine

have only one core or otherwise invoke the /onecpu switch in windows.

As for an AV....go to filehippo and get AVG 7.5 or 8.5, until I moved on I was still using 7.5 for years and manually d/l'ing

the virus definitions and pointing the updater to the file on the drive rather than on-line. It works as 6.5 was the core and still is

    for AVG 2013.

Then get the 2009 version of Outpost Firewall.

    http://www.avg.com/ww-en/download-update-8

8,9, 2011,2012 all work but stick to one version series don't mix them.

I still want to use 2000 some time in the future, especially in a laptop

as my copy is the Volume Licence version with SP4 already integrated

and doesn't even need a key.

  17. I was tired last night or I would have added an edit.

Once tomaz, wild bill and BWC get it perfected and as easy to add as USP5.1

I still plan to use 2000, its paid for, stable, does everything i want [except for that blasted

VC/VS 2010++ getting in the way] and doesn't require activation. Though i do like the XP

start menu over the plain classic. 'nuff said.

  18. @Browncoat, thanks for the info on XXCLONE. What I really want to do, however, is not clone my disk (I can do that now,) but have MSBackup run daily, like it used to do, and backup any changes to my computer (a differential backup.)

& MSB is free, XXCLONE Pro does the same but with the free , you can still set /hyper switch on the advanced tab which leaves unchanged components alone.

  19. The simplest way I found to back up a drive is with XXCLONE version 2.0.0.4 works for 2000 and backward.

    http://www.pixelab.com/

    :thumbup

I used to get it from my visits to majorgeeks.com

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/XXCLONE_d5534.html

Though now it says it is shareware, that is for 2.0.1.2 and later, 2.0.0.4 is still available as freeware,

I used it for years to backup during builds and most recently when I called it up (ver 2.0.0.4) and it

updated itself to 2.0.1.2 , still acts like the freeware version, hasn't asked to pay or for an activation

code. Most likely because I moved to XP SP3 and in near future W7.

Yup, previously stated that I gave up on 2000 when Adobe and Mozilla did :blushing:

Edit: though it doesn't say in the company F.A.Q. I recently moved 2000 pro from its' previous boot drive

[a 30GiB Kingston SSD,and yes boot times were improved, even in IDE mode] to a Maxtor of the same size,

for storage/backup/archive purposes using 2.0.0.4, so if you get that from the freeware page you should be alright.

On the other hand, if your UURollup or USP5.2 is good for you, give the latest a try and let the rest of us know.

If necessary, I can send the 2007 install package to anyone who needs it in an attachment.

PM me, though I'm not as frequent a visitor here as I used to be and only come back when the auto-notify sends me an

    email. :hello:
