  1. When Windows VirtualPC works well with HAV-based computer, its partner (Microsoft VirtualPC 2007 SP1) which has compatibility issue :blushing: won't work anymore in Windows 7, however, its rival (Sun VirtualBox 3.0.10) works wonders  !

For your information, the most recent IE6 on XP3.VHD created (which is freely distributed  ) would start to pop-up WGA balloon  and needs to be activated within a day  , even though it is alright to gain access Windows XP to perform administrative tasks using Windows 7's WPS :hello: remotely.

  2. If you aren't using MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), then Windows Defender, at least, protects your computer from spyware and malware.

Recommended: simply update its latest definition after first running Windows Defender installed for the first use through Internet.

    Here the latest:

    Changelog:

    version: 1.69.1083.0 - 2009/Nov/18

    version: 1.69.995.0 - 2009/Nov/16

    version: 1.69.946.0 - 2009/Nov/14

    :hello: Safe Surfing!

  3. I have pop-ups saying I need to start the help and support service. Try as I might I can't find it. I did a search, and went to msconfig and checked all programs listed there and I seem to have lost it from my pc. How can I get it back?

First of all, try this command, helpctr.exe from Start | Run.

If helpctr.exe not found, then this feature is disabled during the time of nlite-ing. :sneaky:

  4. Usn Journal speeds up virus scanning, but --

    - Is it safe to use USN to keep track of "safe" files?

    - Does it slow down the file system?

    - Can a malware app simply include itself in the USN as a safe file?

AVG9 uses its Cache Server engine, i.e. avgchsvx.exe  , to store .dat files in each partition making hard disk works harder and slowing down overall system performance. The cached data contains AVG9 shielded code to quicken virus/spyware check, however, this process is inefficient method.

  5. ...upgrade... 's going to inherit junk that you have installed in vista...

The upgrade might take 20 hours or more  , according to recent PC magazine article. For a smoother ride, it is recommended to do a fresh installation :thumbup , which is also best after using Windows 7 for a few month later.

Still confused? Get help from Ina Fried (CNET, as of 2009-Nov-2) who might give you a good relook on his article titled Windows 7 upgrade version: The do and don'ts found on http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10388567-56.html

The excerpt, "...The difference between an in-place upgrade and a "clean" installation, in this instance, means backing up one's data, installing Windows 7, restoring the data, and reinstalling all Windows programs. Windows 7 upgrade disks can be used to do this clean installation and will recognize the previously installed version of Windows. So if you don't have any previously installed Windows on the machine, you will want to get yourself a full copy of Windows 7..."

  6. Knowing that Windows 7 installs essential and third-party programs in Program Files folder, programs settings in ProgramData folder, and stores user's profile by creating a softlink Documents and Settings folder to Users folder, Windows system files in Windows folder, leaving XP user not able to store its personal data in Documents and Settings folder.

There is an alternative method :hello: by creating a common pool directory for XP, for example, c:\HOME, in winnt.sif (unattended script), and saved it into I386 folder of ISO image.

    [unattended]

    ; essential and third-party programs

ProgramFilesDir = "c:\HOME" <--- specify Drive C: where Windows 7 is going to install later

    ; shared system programs

CommonProgramFilesDir = "c:\HOME\Common Files" <--- manage system files efficiently

    ; Windows system files

TargetPath = HOME <--- remember to choose Drive C: to install XP

    [GuiUnattended]

    ; user personal data

ProfilesDir="c:\HOME\addins" <--- this folder is seldom use

    :thumbup

  7. Step 1) "D:\WCU\SSE\SQLExpr32_x86_enu.exe" /q /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQL /INSTANCENAME=SQLEXPRESS /SQLSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\Network Service" /SQLSVCStartupType=Automatic /AddCurrentUserAsSqlAdmin /ENABLERANU=1 /SKIPRULES=RebootRequiredCheck /hideconsole /TIMESTAMP="VSExpress_10.0"

Warning: the above silent parameters doesn't work for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Nov (CTP3)

Recommended: copy and paste into cmd.exe environment

step 2) while it is still installing background, open taskmgr.exe, monitor the process SQLxxx in the list

Suggestion: when SQLxxx is not shown in the list, it means the silent install fails to work, then check out SQL error log in Temp directory; e.g. missing Windows Installer 4.5

step 3) when these two program services (sqlservr.exe, sqlwriter.exe) running, the installer has finished its task

Suggestion: please wait until setup100.exe process in the task manager disappears

( can be verified by CCleaner225 under Win7 environment)

  8. When XP lays out its directories structure as follows:

    Documents and Settings #1

    Program Files

    Windows

So, does Windows 7, but slightly different naming:

    Users <--- softlink to #1

    Program Files #2

    ProgramData <--- configuration of #2

    Windows

To reinstall Windows 7 or fresh install over old Windows 7, it will gather all old content of Windows folder and dump it into Windows.OLD; disk space sucker  .

Have you heard of ExplorerXP that help erase easily :thumbup ? A Google Search brings to `ExplorerXP is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non - commercial use) file ... Download http://www.explorerxp.com/explorerxpsetup.exe - 410 KB. Version 1.07`

How it works simply by renaming the folder name with file extension,

    e.g. changed ProgramFiles to ProgramFiles.old

In this sequence of renaming and deletion,

    i.e. Windows.old, ProgramData.old, ProgramFiles.old, Users.old, Documents and Settings.old (softlink), Perflog.old (optional), Recovery.old (optional)

Remember to set 0% in Recycle Bin, or press Shf + Del while deleting them permanently safe and sound

Note that the filesize of DirSizeCache.dat, FolderStates.dat, and Groups.dat within ExplorerXP folder will gradually increase, especially the FolderStates.dat, which is safe to delete it when the program exits (optional).

  9. ...So I would like to reduce efficiently the size of the registry, which at first glance looks like a more elegant solution, and might accelerate Win startup as well.

    ...

create a new user account with administrator rights, and then copy all previous documents back into the new user folder, except ntuser.*. keep it safe just in case you need the customization as well as the corrupted data.

  10. It seems some driver files have been corrupted on my system.

    ...

These are the settings from boot.ini

    [boot loader]

    timeout=30

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer /noguiboot /bootlog

    ...

The last ntbtlog.txt displayed kmixer.sys several times at the end,

but replacing it hasn't stopped the problem

    ...

go to Safe Mode (F8) and uninstall kmixer.sys and its related drivers (from its .inf), and then Normal Mode.

    changed 'multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer /noguiboot /bootlog'

to 'multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect'

  11. when backgroundDefault.jpg is missing from `C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds`, the Logon screen will use its original wallpaper.

Recommended: unlock registry restriction Control Panel | User Accounts and Family Safety | User Accounts | Change User Account Control settings | slide 'Default - Notify me...' to 'Never notify me...' | OK | close window

    how to:

step 1) create a .JPG file with the following image properties,

    96dpi <--- can be larger than e.g. 100dpi

    800x600 <--- 1024x768, or 1280x960

    24bps

    227.14KB <--- less than 370KB

step 2) open regedit.exe, and create registry key,

    HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\authentication\logonUI\Background

    OEMBackground (DWORD)

    = 1 // use customized background wallpaper

    = 0 // default blue wallpaper

step 3) to see the result by logging off current session,

    shutdown /l

    FOOTNOTE:

just in case you might need to grab a freeware for image manipulation, try IrfanView 4.25 from CNET @ http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=...%3Ddl-IrfanView

note that 'Windows 7 logo and edition' 'welcome' are still appeared.

    happy tweaking! :hello:

  12. Hey, has anyone tested many games on Win 7??? It would be good to see if it maintained exact compatibility with games that ran on Vista and hopefully even better than that. I have seen some pretty old games run good on Win 7, but wanted to hear some other people's experiences.

    Microsoft Zoo Tycoon works.

    Microsoft Pinball (w98/w2k/wxp) works.

    Quake III Arena works.

    Microsoft Fury3x (w9x) doesn't work well.

    Rise of Nations works well.

  13. Good morning, the last time I did any programming, ansi cobal 1,2, and 3 I think were kings of the day. Some RPG2 as well. However that was 30years ago and now I am in need of learning this new stuff. My question is who can I turn to for help in getting the basics...thanks Ed

Hi, you might want to take a dive into Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2, where you can download a copy of free Express ISO CD/DVD from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=167878

    Cheers! :hello:

  14. I have recently tried to do the ComputerName on UserName tweak, but I was unable to update due "Some keys are in use."

Also does anyone remember the tweak to put system infomation(system build number) in the bottom right hand corner?

    Any Suggestions?

    Try out: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Change the computer network name and windows serial key and that it. I am looking for a program that is made to do that. ca someone help me?...
