  1. I have kind of a unique situation where I need to install some kind of stealth key logger on my XP machine. People in my house are doing something to screw up the XP machine. If I ask them, they say that they just visit normal sites......So I want to log everything (including keystrokes) that they do on the machine so I can pinpoint where the problems are coming from.

    What are my options as far as logging software goes?

  2. Any internet company is going to tell you Windows XP or later due to support. Any connection will work on a 9x machine, but your ISP may not provide support if something goes wrong.

    Another part of the requirement for it is drivers if you use a USB hookup on your modem. If you connect via USB, you will need the drivers for it.....You should always connect via ethernet, its a lot faster and more reliable...plus you don't need drivers.

    Get whatever ISP you want, as long as you connect with ethernet you will be fine.

    I notice that most DSL companies have system requirements, and I'm not surprised to see that they start with XP and up.

    What's the sysrq for? I assume drivers for the hardware, but I don't believe for a second that people running SE can't use high-speed Internet.

    I think I'd "like" to use Verizon - at least, they have our phone already and their deal looks best. I've heard bad things, though (more often in the past), so if they're not a good choice, warn me!

    I am curious who is a good DSL provider, but I'm really asking - what DSL can I get, say $20/month, about 1.0mbps/400k to 1.5/500, that will work with 98SE? I suspect that any will, but I'd like to be sure. A baby's coming, and I'd like to be working from home by November, thus the switch to modern Internet at long last.

    Is anyone using Verizon DSL with 98SE?

  3. Sounds like a file system problem to me. What file system is your primary drive? Windows XP only supports NTFS (recommended) or FAT32. Could be a RAID or SCSI issue as well. If you have RAID or SCSI set up, you will need to load the drivers prior to XP install.

    A little more info about your computer and how you're trying to install windows would be more helpful.

  4. I am currently running windows xp pro. I am using a Ge Force 6200 video card, with 256mgs of ram. I would like to switch to vista, so I ran vista upgrade advisor. It told me I need to update some drivers, the question I have is, do I need to update the Trident Video Accelerator Blade 3D/Promedia. In device manager next to the video accelerator it has a yellow circle with a ! in the center. Do I need that driver. There is a error code 10, this device cannot start. I hope that this is in the right forum, if not I am sorry. Anyhelp would be appreciated.

    Sounds like you have an onboard video card that you're not using. Right click on it and then click disable. Since you're using your nvidia card, there is no need to have the drivers for the other one installed or even have it enabled. A neat thing that you can do with it though is set up dual monitors. Get the driver for it installed and you can set up to have side by side monitors. Comes in pretty handy for multi-tasking.

    As far as upgrading to Vista, if you don't have at least 2gigs of ram and a 2GHz processor, I would not recommend it. XP is a great OS and there is really no reason to upgrade unless you buy a new computer that comes with Vista.

    According to that, my ISP doesn't limit torrent connections (AT&T Bellsouth).

    Can you explain the half open connections a little more?

    My problem isn't with the torrent speeds, its with my browsing speed while torrents are downloading. For example, right now my torrent is running 51kB/s down and 18kB/s up.......and it took almost 30 seconds to pull up this forum. My speeds via the modems ip page are down - 6163kbps and up - 509. They don't change when I'm using torrent and when I'm not

  6. I'm using Vista Home Premium SP2 x64. Whenever I download anything via uTorrent, my internet speed drastically decreases....to the point that some pages will time out in my browser. This happens when my XP machine over wireless is using uTorrent as well. My internet setup is a 3mbit DSL connection. The modem AT&Ts 2wire wireless gateway ( http://store.att.com/Catalog/ProductDetail...tegoryId=catMRG ). My vista machine is hooked up via ethernet and the XP machine is hooked up via wireless. It doesn't matter if total download speeds in uTorrent are at 10k or 500k, it screwes up browsing either way.

    Any ideas on what the issue could be? I have the ports forwarded properly for each machine.

  7. You're doing that the hard way. There is a GUI window for it that may be easier for someone who hasn't done it before. In the search bar in the start menu, type in "services.msc" and you can disable/auto/manual everything by right clicking and goto properties. There is descriptions that tell you what everything is in there as well.

    As far as good cleaners, I use both Ccleaner and Comodo. Another must have program is Diskeeper 2009, it uses idle processes to keep your disk defragged as well as a bunch of other helpful stuff.

    EDIT:

    OK, here's my services registry settings on my laptop running Vista Business 64-bit - this will set numerous services to "manual" (3) or "disabled" (4); only a couple are disabled outright (Tablet services and Remote Registry); the rest are set to manual.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AgereModemAudio]
    "Start"=dword:00000003

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient]
    "Start"=dword:00000003

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WerSvc]
    "Start"=dword:00000003

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stisvc]
    "Start"=dword:00000003

    Also, you should check what programs have entries in the following registry keys:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (64-bit only)

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    Let us know what's located under these keys and we can probably tell you what is essential and what is not. (Of course, make sure you back up those keys before deleting anything in case something we say isn't important actually is!)

  8. WOW !!!!!

    You are too helpful !!! Much thanks for this great info which was all new to me. I've copied your posts to a Word document and intent to try your suggestions, one by one. Thanks again ! :hello:

    Not a problem at all. I'm glad I could help

    You're best off just jumping in and doing it all at once, that way you can see the difference as a whole. It won't take you more then 30 minutes to do.

  9. Glad I can help. You may want to take a look at this site as well. It shows you what services are safe to disable, this is the same process I used to trim down my XP system. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

    Remember when you do it, goto Start > Run and type SERVICES.MSC (do not use msconfig to make the changes).

    Another spot you can probably trim down is in the registry (start > run and type regedit)

    HKEY_Local Machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run

    hkey_current user/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run

    Under those to keys, you can disable stuff like the manufacture programs that start up automatically, adobe speed launcher, java update, quick time, etc...

    Before you go and buy a new video card, see if you can't get the updated drivers for it from ATIs web page. If those don't work, you might want to see if an older version of the driver would work (doubtful that an old version would work but its worth a try). If I remember right, GSI automatically checks to see if your drivers are the latest version under the "updates" tab on the page.

    If you have any questions when you're trimming things down, let me know. I've done it on countless machines and I've come across just about every configuration and program.... You will be amazed at the difference it makes. My boot time takes less then half the time it did before and everything launches a lot faster.

  10. Acer should send you a copy of the install disk. I had to get one from Dell a few weeks ago. My computer came with a 32bit Vista disk and I wanted the 64bit (since I have a x64 processor), so I asked them to send me the x64 and they did....for free! It showed up at my door the next day. Easy and quick process.

    Even though you have a valid Vista license, you have to use an Acer OEM disk to install Vista, or you won't be able to activate it. So don't try and get clever and borrow your friends retail disk or HP OEM disk.....you will just run into all sorts of problems.

  11. The last file I tried was 166MB. The conversion was from MPEG to AVI. I have 1GB of RAM, I'm using XP Pro and there are 62 processes running.

    My laptop has the same O/S, amount of memory and program installed and I can convet this file (or a 4GB file) with no problem !

    62 processes running is quite a bit. My XP machine runs about 25 processes when I'm doing a lot on it....its at 16 processes on idle (including Kaspersky) and my Vista machine runs 38 processes (and Vista has a whole lot more to it then XP)

    It sounds to me like you have some software conflict. Its possible that you have a driver issue but not likely.

    http://www.getsysteminfo.com/

    Thats a link to a neat little tool from Kaspersky thats free. It will gather all your info about processes, drivers, etc....On the top right of the page click download, after you download it install and run it. In GSI, click Settings and slide the slider to Max then click OK. Then click on Create Report. It will make a .rar file on your desktop. Upload the .rar file here or you can e-mail it to me and I'll take a look at it. From there we can narrow down possible problems. If you would like to take a look at the report generated for yourself, you can do it at the link above.

    By the way, what program are you using to convert your files?

  12. I don't think that this is really a "problem".

    Every one of the XP machines I've had makes you click on the name before you type in the password.

    You haven't had any replies cause there is no solution.

    And begging for help isn't going to get people to help you faster

  13. I've seen the problem before, even on my own system as it now. It' has 2 onboard NICs and one stopped being recognized but after some weeks it's back up again. It's must be something with a charged circuit and you should discharge that circuit or wait till the charge leaks away. Normally it can be done by just grounding the board without the PSU and battery connected but you have to try it out.

    Both the keyboard and mouse port on an old machine of mine died recently....I have usb ones hooked up now....think this would help revive those ports?

  14. I wouldn't try messing around with activation cracks in XP though, it always leads to trouble lol

    And it also goes against our forum rules. ;)

    Obviously it goes against forum rules.

    Even if it didn't, I still wouldn't reccomend it. I went through loops with Microsoft on a copy of XP (it was a real legit copy too) that wouldn't activate. I tried to spoof the activation and it just led to all sorts of h*ll

  15. If its a Dell computer you can goto support.dell.com and chat with one of their support reps. Tell them you need a new disk sent out and they will express mail it to you. I just did this last week and I got my disk the next day via FedEx. I'm sure that other mfg do it too, but Dell is the only one I know for sure.

    If you can't get a disk from the mfg, see if anyone you know has the same brand computer and use their XP disk (as long as you have the product key sticker still on the machine). Doing this would be just like you had your own disk and usually you don't have to put in the product key or even activate it.

    If all else fails, you have the option of putting Linux on it. Ubuntu is a great one......or you can do Kubuntu (a little more like the XP enviroment).

    I wouldn't try messing around with activation cracks in XP though, it always leads to trouble lol

  16. Recommended Registry Cleaner: COMODO system cleaner - as it also offers cleaning the system and to top it all, it is FREE. I am using it for more than a year to get many problems (related to abnormal application behavior) resolved.

    Great recommendation. I downloaded it and tried it out - it picked up several things that both Tune Up Utilities and Ccleaner missed.

    Thanks for the heads up on it!
