  1. Well - after 2 painful weeks, my data is back! You don't know how happy I am.... After a stressful last 2 hours, where I thought I'd lost my data forever - I managed to recover the HDD. As listed above, the last proceedure was taking far far too long. So I switched the PSU off (thus cutting power to the HDD). Plugged it into my computer, and booted the sucker up. BIOS detected the HDD, but was registering it as 0MB. So I thought "Son of a b***h!" and panicked thinking I'd fraked the thing! So out of desperation, I tried it again! (Using the Aviko method..which I'd just done). Only this time I used the extra set of instructions. Everything went fine. Everything was as per normal. I plugged it into the computer....still no go. Registered the drive as 0MB. So I though "Frak it", and tried the 0LBA method. This went fine as well. Plugged it into the HDD...but AARRRGHHHH!!! BIOS didn't even detect the drive this time. Wonderful. So I thought I'd try the Graduis method. But this didn't work and gave me LED errors when I'd reconnect the motorhead. By this stage I thought I'd really REALLY screwed my HDD. I was now at my wits end. I'm not a religious man, far from it, I've never been to church. But I can tell you I put my hands together while sitting in my seat and prayed to the almighty God for mercy. I then, in one last ditch attempt tried the Aviko method once more. All went fine (like I'd seen before). Plugged it into my computer. Went into BIOS. LOW AND BEHOLD, there she was!!!! Quickly updated the firmware, and then waited...waited.....And there was the Windows XP loading screen!!!! Never have I seen such a magnificent loading screen in all my life!! I seriously put my face in my hands and began to sob. And then quickly backed all my data up onto my new awaiting drive.... I still don't know about any almighty being...but I may have to make a trip somewhere this Sunday.... This could also be a message to say that Seagate are the devil. Woe any unfortunate soul who eat from their poisoned apple. They will never, I say NEVER, get a tiny SLIVER of my money - ever again (In fact, I work at an electronics store that sells various Seagate products - for which I shall never recommend to ANY customer)! I have spent THREE WEEKS trying to research and fix this problem using various cables. All of which have cost me time and money. Both of which could have been spent on my loved ones, and my assignments. Shame on you Seagate. Shame on you for everyone's lost time, money and many hours spent worrying!
  2. This sucks. After an hour and a half of it doing nothing - I decided to turn the power off. So I retried everything, with success!! However - now when booting into bios, it shows the HDD...but the size is 0MB!!!! Holy mother of crap! This is just p***ing me off....
  3. Okay - so managed to acquire a cable and got this up and running in Hyperterminal. In the last command, m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22. How long should it take to come up with the Max WR Retries, etc etc message? It's been 25 minutes so far and nothing... 45 minutes - no response. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I JUST WANT MY DATA BACK!!!
  4. first: do loopback test of the cable. 38400, 8, N, 1, None flow control GND: Use pin3 of jumper connector, near TX. Can't do a loopback test. Have tried - but Hyperterminal has no response from keyboard. All of those settings are correct. And I have GND on pin 3 of the HDD. Have tried switching the TX and RX pins, but same results. I get no response in HT. I can't even punch in any characters. All that shows is a blinking cursor.
  5. ARRGGHHH!!! This is frustrating. This is my 4th cable now. This time a Nokia-based Data cable. Plug it in - Windows detects a USB to serial cable - great. Awesome. Just what I'm needing. I find the TX and RX wires. Both register 3v when tested w/ a multimeter. This cable has two grounds. One a GND for the charger, and the other GND for the Data. No clue which one I should use. (Have tried both). Using a straight sata power cable from the PSU. Paper on the head trick (not motor). I connect the TX wire onto the RX on HDD, and RX onto the TX HDD. GND wire goes to GND on HDD. I turn on, wait for HDD to stop spinning. Open up Hyperterminal. Adjust baud rate settings as listed. CTRL+Z. Nothing. No response from Keyboard. For the love of God can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here???
  6. Given that the PCB has been removed repeatedly to try and get this fix going, I doubt Seagate is gonna do data recovery. Also, Firmware hacking is dangerous/bad etc? What, you mean like what everyone else has been doing to fix their drives? Pichi: The drive died with this problem. it just started buzzing and not responding. As i've said, i've removed the PCB and done the fix in an eariler post, no change. /C, Q Gives me an LED error. but that's probably cause I have the PCB removed. Will try again in a moment. Firstly, there has been no 'hacking' of any firmware here. Secondly, I don't think Seagate can tell if you've removed the PCB off the board....the screws are there so you can put it back on.
  7. Dude - I'm pretty sure there's a Segate repair center located in Australia. Maybe contacting them to sort it out (and recover your data) might be a quicker solution? The possibility of firmware 'hacking' is slim at best - not to mention extremely dangerous.
  8. Why do you use batterys on this cable? Doesn't the cable use the power from the USB port on your laptop? I'm using a CA-42 cable without batterys and it will not work. See the posts below from me. If your terminal is in non-echo mode you can't see any character your are typing on the keyboard. You only see these characters in the loopback test. The loopback test only works when you join TX and RX on your data cable. No connections to the hdd! "It's a RS232 Serial based data cable, running through a Serial to USB converter. " It's a serial cable. Not USB (The only USB portion is the Serial to USB converter - but this does not provide power for the old serial data cables) And the loopback test is running w/ both RX and TX linked together...
  9. Okay - this is really starting to do my head in. Some help would be appreciated. I have this Ericsson Phone Cable here: http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-P-W/erics_t28_pinout.shtml It's a RS232 Serial based data cable, running through a Serial to USB converter. I have connected wire/pins to the TX and RX points. I have also connected a 3v battery pack to the DGND(-) and the VCC (+). Checking the connection with a multimeter (one probe on the + line of the battery pack, and the other on either TX or RX) shows the TX and RX pins are running at 3v each. So the connections must be correct. However - when testing it in Hyperterminal, with all the settings as specified in this board, I get nothing. I can't type any characters, and I can't perform any loop-back test because of this. I've tried this on two laptops now. Anyone have any ideas??
  10. It is quite a puzzle. I did try testing out something though. Figuring that the cable might need some kind of power to 'activate' it in windows (I seem to remember someone saying that some nokia cables are self powered by the USB, and some are not). From the phone connection end I disconnected the TX and RX wires, and soldered them onto the CD-ROM audio cable ends (To go into the HDD). Everything else I left connected up to the plug-end plug. I then plugged the phone it. The phone recognises it's been plugged into a data cable - but (of course, because both TX and RX wires are not connected), nothing comes up in Windows. I then plugged the TX and RX wires into the HDD. And turned it on. Unfortunately, Windows came with with 'USB device not recognised'. This went away when disconnecting the HDD. Back to the drawing board. When I tried to manually install the drivers - I got a windows message saying that the 'drivers had not be registered' - perhaps the Nokia Suite dynamically registereds the drivers and un-registereds them when not in use. I'm gonna try a program that I have which captures changes to the system state (drivers, programs, registry entries etc) first when a nokia phone is attached and then when just the cable is attached. I'll let ya know the results. PS. This would be a lot easier if one of the people who' managed to do this using the CA-42 would respond. Err - are you sure it's not just the message Windows gives to drivers that have not been signed? ie. The manufacturer didn't pay Microsoft monies to have their drivers come with the big M$ Seal of Approval.

  12. I think that the cable need power supply:10 DGND Digital ground <-------- Negative terminal of 3V battery 11 Vcc DC + for battery charging + External accessory powering <-------- Positive terminal of 3V battery Schematic: http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhonesCables/eri...le_pinout.shtml Configure your hyperterminal: 38400, 8, N, 1, None Yeh- I've got the Ericsson cable down - I'm talking about the Motorola Cable
  13. okay - another question someone might be able to help with. I have acquired to mobile data cables. An old Ericsson and Motorla. The following pin-outs for the cables are here: http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N/motor...88_pinout.shtml and here http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-P-W/erics_t28_pinout.shtml Using the Ericsson cable, I connected the TX and RX respectively, and a 3v battery to the DGND and VCC. However - when in Hyperterminal (using the Ericsson cable), pressing CRTL+Z results in random characters flowing down the screen. I've tried switching the RX and TX but the same results happen. Looking at the Motorola cable I'm completely lost. Can anyone give me a hand as to where I would connect the + and - terminals of the 3v battery. The RX and TX lines are self explanatory.
  14. Sounds like the com port chipset is in the phone.... I don't know if that would be the case. As I've tried a number of different Nokia phones for testing purposes with the same results.
  15. Grrr - this is annoying. The Nokia Data Suite recognises there's a CA-42 cable plugged in when the phone is connected. And shows it using Port 5. This also shows up under COM ports in the Windows Device Manager. However - when you unplug the phone, COM port 5 disappears. Which makes it hard when you need to do a test run in Hyperterminal. WTH is going on here??
