  1. Ok not much luck with reponses thus far, so here's a slightly different question.

How many Meg does ms office 2007 excel, word & pwerpoint usually consume ?

Or how much do the various flavors of office use ?

Is there some place I can find this info ?

Not the system requirements, since these are usually quite rubbery ... I'm after your experience on real usage.

Also : If you use the install menu to not install all apps in the ms office suite, does the whole suite still get copied to MSOCache or LIS folder ? Is that the way it usually works ?

My point is I'm trying to minimize the windows and office footprints in C Drive, if as I suspect the whole lot gets copied to C Drive anyway, then it would be better for me to get hold of a student version of office, since the whole must be MUCH less than professional, enterprise, etc. Any advice, comments welcome.

While I'm in question mode here's another, has anyone slimmed down office ?

Not shrinking the install iso size, rather reducing services, etc as in nLite ?

  2. My copy of office 2007 Enterprise does a complete install, I can remove all but excel, word and powerpoint post install, but the hidden Installer folder of WINDOWS is 897M ... almost defeats the purpose of removing most components. How can I get the install size to reflect what I'm using ? Or is there a way to modify the office iso to show an install menu, which could then reduce the install for the 3 apps only that I want ?

I've been trying this in vpc 2007 so far, here is a pic of the folder tree.

  3. Actually I have been wondering if it was possible to alter an ENU version of XP, I have some truly "slim" versions, into a JPN ver. e.g. copy or incorporate the necesary files form our Jpn ver. I imagine it would be quite a task ... but is it possible ?

  4. Thanks johnhc, you beat me to answering my own question, as I realized I could easily test for it myself. So I tried nLite in vpc without installing NET and it wouldn't work even though the host was running NET. Then I installed NET into vpc and all is well. This is great news, I can keep NET off my system and install it only in my vpc for nLiting in the future. Yeah I know some apps need NET ... I always avoid them for that reason, there are always alternatives available.

I have heard that NET can slow things down and also potentially be a security issue, has anyone views on this ?

  5. Well I have some good news I have been able to successfully remove components and slip hotfixes, the solution seems to be using UNattended. I had not used unattended at all prior to this, since I hadn't wanted to complicate my testing with too many variables. In my tedious one step at a time iso testing, finally I thought would try unattended only ... just to see it it could work. I could install an unattended ver, then to my surprise I could then include a single hotfix, which I had to re DL directly from ms, to guarantee authenticity. Likewise adding more hotfixes and finally removing components all worked too.

Before this, installation always broke down at the regional language settings menu or even earlier, for some reason making installation unattended stops the trouble. As far as I see this shouldn't be the case and I'm now curious if others working with Japanese or non-english windows versions have had similar experiences. If so this should be noted on the nLite site as many may otherwise give up.

Thanks all for your assistance, hope I can report back later with more good news about the depth of my nLiting Japanese XP.

  6. I like to minimize apps, services running so have been wondering what I'd do after I have my windows finally setup how I want it. I would prefer not to have NET.framework running but if I wish to fire up nLite I need NET.framwork. Could I easily uninstall NET ?

Just now I read about the ability to run nLite inside a virtual mc, if I do this do I need NET running in the host or is NET in the virtual mc only possible ? This would be ideal ... keeping NET off the main (host) system.

So do you guys keep NET.framework on your systems always ?

  7. I have DLd all my hotfixes direct from ms, a long process but all the great sites that have packs don't supply JPN ones that I know of.

Here is the last failed at regional settings session.

    LAST_SESSION.INI

As I've said I have tried many other hotfixes in the past, not only these, with similar or worse results. But since you have raised the possiblilty of false or corrupted patches I will DL some again and use those ones, to eliminate one factor.

  8. I'm someshat relieved to find that we all agree my OEM version is a true source. I went to some pc shops and they agreed that my booklet and disk is genuine, we looked at the new sp3 ver OEM CD and the files/folders are identical ... just slight size diff. They all said that in Japan as I assume as elsewhere the only difference betwen OEM and retail is the key type. Here is a pic of my booklet for reference.

Now a small breakthrough ... I nLited a single tweak in my sp3 version and it installed perfectly in vpc.

Just prior to that I nLited another single hotfix, different to earlier mentioned example and it failed at the regional settings menu again. I will try more tweaks and make a more comprehensive summary of where nLite is working and failling in an effort to give everyone a better chance to assist me. This will take a while.

  9. I will have a chance to visit the shop Tuesday.

I did a bit of searching on the net on XP OEM for sale, some of the booklets have a white sticker on them while others don't. Mine does and looks the same as them, though the pics are too tiny to zoom up and read, perhaps you know what the sticker is for.

I'm sure that I wouldn't be able to remove security Center and Outlook Express during installation, so nlite is my preferred method. Here is a tree of the ValueAdd folder.

  10. I have some trouble with the last request :

BOOTFONT is a small bin file not a folder (129k)

VALUEADD is too big to post isn't it ? (10.4M), after zipping with winrar still 4.9M

I can't find WINNT.SIF file, I ghave WINNT as .exe

  11. johnhc the source should be ok, the CD dust cover was sealed inside a seal-wrapped XP Home booklet. Additionally the shop and owner are reputable. It is a sp2 "version 2002". Here is a view of CD contents :

Sp0iLedBrAt I use Japanese windows since my wife is Japanese. I however install all additional software as English versions, which causes no problems. e.g. ms office, Ie8, wmp, Foxit, the list is quite long. As it turns out I've been thinking of doing some trials of setting windows defalt language to English ... so far though all messages and dropdowns are still in Japanese. Could you educate me about "all those beautiful Unattended features" ?

Being a foreigner in a small city of Japan, I have nobody to ask such things about, even when I pose such questions to the pc kit shops here I get different answers ... few people want to do what I desire. Thus every small change I try takes 5x longer due to a lack of advice. I feel that I'm at the RIGHT place at the moment though.

  12. Yes the Jpn version loads in vpc just fine, as sp2 or with sp3, importantly without any hotfix. The hotfix trial I posted here used KB954459 MSXML, but I get the same trouble with many other hotfixes too, or even just removing something innocent like calculator, games or a single keyboard.

Good to hear OEM is ok for nLiting ... I'm still in with a chance.

  13. Hi again johnhc, yes I have successfully integrated sp3, the beta and now final ver, both installed in VPC w/o trouble as I didn't make any other changes. I bought the windows XP sp2 from a pc repair shop here, in Japan, it was intended for install with sale of new pc, so I got some discount ... I guess that means OEM, as I just did a search for the meaning.

I still have the install with final sp3 and no other change in vpc, so I will be able to run any tests needed.

From SETUPP.INI the Pid=76492OEM ... well there it is OEM ! What are my options now ?

  14. Sp0iLedBrAt I so hoped the issue of not using the final sp3 release was the problem ... alas it wasn't. I tried integrating final sp3 only, both by pc and nLite, both install fine. Then final sp3 and a single companent removed, then again with a single hotfix ... both failed at the same place again - the regional setting menu. At last I tried a single change in sp2 ... it also failed at the same place in the install.

Though it is a good thing that I DO have the proper sp3 now ... thanks.

As extra info I have nLited an english ver of XP Pro and it installed just fine. Why is the Japanese version giving me so much trouble ?

Here are one of the latest sessions and one of the scrambled menus, this menu is better than others as there are actually buttons to progress ... though I didn't.

Thanks johnhc for the link and encouragement.

  15. I have ben trying for over a week to install an nLited version of XP, in Virtual PC 2007 sp1, without luck. Actually I can install a version after XPsp3 integration, however if I try to do anything else at all there's trouble ... even a single hotfix, keyboard or applic removal. Each time install gets to regional language, keyboard settings ... often this menu box is scrambled symbols not words at all.

I'm in Japan and using localised XP, all the hotfixes I've tried have already been installed in my pc ... so they do work in reality. This is my first time to grapple with nLite though I've been planning to do so for some time, as I'd love to be rid of such things as outlook express, security center, remote registry, etc. Lucky I've been trying in vpc or less I'd truly be in a pickle.

nLite is so well tested so there must be some really basic thing that I'm stuffing up, so any helpful advice for this newbie would be a blessing.
