  1. Thanks, I was messing up the knoppix part. My version boots directly to Adriane which is text based not graphical. I deleted the files and folders that had the arrow links on them so I hope that is ok. Like all users folder. I looked at my last version of file system from before when I used your tutorial and you changed it to use knoppix and I dont have all the folder links in it as well.

  2. Ok well I am really confused with section 4.3. You say to delete all .lnk files found with the file manager in knoppix, is that all the dir that are listed except the microsoft one? How do I know which ones are .lnk? Same for the users folder. You mention the ones with arrows but I dont see them with the file manager. I do see a few with freecommander when I am booted so do I make note of those? How do I copy the folders also? The file manager in knoppix is not graphical so I dont see any options for this.

  3. If I want to re-install windows on both win1 and win2 what do I have to do? I was using a slim version but have to many problems and want to go back to untouched images. I already have lots of stuff on the 3rd partition like images and docs and didn't want to take them all off.

    Hi xpJohnson:

The easiest way is as follows:

1.- Save first any personal files or folders kept into partitions 2 and 3 into an external device.

    2.- Boot partition 3 (Win2) and format fast partition 2 (Win1).

3.- Insert the install DVD, reboot from it and reinstall Windows 7 into partition 2 (Win1).

4.- Go on doing as explained at paragraph 4.

5.- When you restore afterwards your personal files and folders you'd rather not use for it none of both Windows drives, but logical units. If you don't have any you only need to reduce the size of partition 2 or 3 (the biggest one) and create one or several logical units into the free left HDD space. As usually said, "never put all eggs into the same basket".

    Best wishes.

    Thanks cannie,

I have a few more questions.

    1. What is the purpose of the format fast while running win2?

    2. In 4.6 you mention the convenience of running win2 as default, what is the advantage?

    3. Is winrar better for the backup than 7zip?

I already have my files in the logical partition so I hope I am good there.

  4. 5.5.- REDUCE THE SIZE OF WINDOWS 7 BY DELETING UNNECESSARY FILES AND FOLDERS.-

    - The Windows size can be considerably reduced by deleting the C:\winsxs\Backup subfolder.

    - Use the "Search" option of "FreeCommander", copy this line "as is" into the search space and delete all results:

    .log1;.log2;.pnf;.tmp;.bak;.evtx

I am having problems with this. I can't delete the files it finds. It says they are in use. Any ideas?

Also I noticed you removed the language files you were mentioning to delete as well. Should I keep those now?

Great guide, your last update is easier to follow now but I would still recommend the larger win2 partition. My install to backup is 13.3GB without the hiber and page file and I started with a 2.5GB slimmed version.

  5. the whole renaming thing doesnt need to be done in the first place. browse to windows\system32\drivers and both should be there. wimmount and wimfltr. both are used in this case. AFAIK you can not have both installed. I tried installing waik2 when 1.1 was there and the install told me to remove the other first. No need to have both installed, you just need the imagex and filters from them. hope that answered your questions

  6. I tryed again and indicated fields with "Windows 7 Professional",then just make ISO in vLite, nothing else and I got this error now

    th_error2.jpg

I didnt entered cd-key in vLite,I only checked "Make ISO".

When i click OK its going to screen "Install now" and then i again recive this error.

    Any idea?

    This becoming very very frustrating.

did you use the autoattend settings from vlite. the key vlite uses is for vista not 7.

  7. bapt, wouldn't export be easier, just 1 step

    I don't understand ^^

My understanding of what you are doing is already an export. You are using apply to EXPORT a given image number from a wim to a directory then capturing that directory to a wim. So essentially you are EXPORTING a image number like 4 for ultimate to a new wim that only has that image. Is that right?

    imagex /export D:\imaging\install.wim 4 D:\imaging\export.wim

export.wim will now contain only the ultimate image. I may not understand what you are doing if this is not case.

  8. I just used vista imagex and wim tweak and removed hyper-v package then vlited and installed and it worked. now on to batch files for removal. so far 5.97GB x64

was this after you used seven imagex?

Yes, I have a wim saved that I used the seven imagex on and also exported the ultimate index. I copy this over to my working folder each time to try something new. I am now removing about 60 packages to see what happens.

  9. it works very well, just using first Gimagex and after Vlite :thumbup

I tested a second time to be sure

Can you please explain in more precision way this part just using first Gimagex ?

What i have to do in Gimagex?

And are you talking about MSDN W7+SP1 integrated or W7+SP1 intergrated with RT7 Lite?

Thanks and sorry for my bad english :)

Use Gimagex to mountrw then commit and unmount. then vlite. thats it. make sure you use waik2 with gimagex.

Sorry but i still dont understand.

What to mount? Its asking for wim file but i have W7 iso file and there is 4-5 columns, what i must mount and where?

Extract ISO to a folder then mount the [extracted folder]\sources\install.wim

    Tnx :)

In what column i have to mount,Capture,Apply,Mount?

And you wrote this Use Gimagex to mountrw then commit and unmount. What i have to commit? And mountrw is a writing mistake or that rw means something?

    Thanks in advance :)

make some folders like c:\7iso for your extracted iso and c:\7mount for your gimagex to mount to. if you open gimagex and go to the mount tab you will see the options for read write and commit. select them both and point the gimagx to the folders you just made

  11. i may have found another way to delete files from the wim. it involves using vista imagex and seven imagex. if you use seven imagex, u cant remove files from the winsxs due to file ownership restrictions whereas if you use vista imagex, you can

I think this is the same problem I was having. For the last week I was using vista imagex and was removing packages get it wont install then. With seven imagex I am can't remove packages or even mount the registry.

Are you doing this before or after vlite?

the reg wim tweak and package removal can be done using seven imagex but it takes a long time to complete. ths must all be done before vlite. im testin now to see if this can be done with vista imagex instead

ps i would recommed to install waik 1.1 and 2.0, copy over imagex then uninstall both from your system such as

C:\ImageX\seven\amd64 <------ this folder is from windows aik\tools folder (waik 2.0)

C:\ImageX\vista\amd64 <------- this folder is from windows aik\tools folder (waik 1.1)

place a copy of gimagex into each amd64 folder where imagex resides and then test this way

I just tried and the wim tweak went through with vista imagex. I tried my own wim tweak but it is not working because of permissions. I think the first commit with seven imagex puts different permissions on files.

Your suggestion of the 2 imagex is what I have been doing. I will try to vlite now.

  14. Just try dead0 procedure. It works and I am doing my 4th install right now. The last 3 worked. You just don't need to switch back and forth the filters.

I can see where rtlite then vlite might work because rtlite only works with waik2 so it might be the same as using imagex to commit then switch over to vlite. not going to try though when this works as it is. My last test was x64 ultimate and a 6.14GB install.

  15. Update: I got it work using dead0 procedure. I only removed the languages so far. For some reason I was getting errors that a component couldn't be installed and I was being very conservative on my vlite removal.

Dead0, have you tried installing the RegTweak for package removal and remove any packages yet? Also, your procedure of switching back and for the wimfltr and wimmount doesn't make sense. Doesn't the win7 version that we got the wimmount from used with imagex not the wimfltr. I have both in the driver folder. You are just switching the vlite version when you swap them right?

7 x86 of dead0 take 5GB of disk space, it does not remove many component

unless it has installed software or other

could not remove the components without using Vlite?

    with imagex or dism, directly

the problem will be the same?

I dont understand what you are saying. I got a 6.3GB install with x64 Ultimate and removing languages with vlite. I was asking what his session was because you have to select something as far as I know to get vlite to do something. When I tried a selecting a few things to remove I got an error when installing saying not all components could be installed.

  17. WAIK 2 is for 7 I thought. 1.1 is for vista. 1.1 was released in 2008, 2 was released in 2009 and 3 this month. WAIK 2 should have the wimmount.sys, that is what I have.

WAIK 1.1 => WAIK for Windows Vista

WAIK 2 => WAIK for Windows Vista SP1 et Windows Server 2008

    WAIK3 => WAIK for Windows 7

    not wimmount.sys on WAIK 2 ;)

Thanks for clarifying, Than it doesn't make sense what dead0 is saying.

  18. i just did another test & no errors after vlite

    u could try this way:

    1) ensure waik 2.0 is installed

    2) in cmd prompt, go to Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64 and execute wimmountinstall /install

    3) copy wimmount.sys from above folder to Program Files (x86)\vLite\wimfltr\x64

    4) rename wimfltr.sys (this is the vista version) to something else such as wimfltr2.sys as you will need it later

    5) rename the copied wimmount.sys to wimfltr.sys

    6) right click wimfltr.inf Program Files (x86)\vLite\wimfltr\x64 folder to install

    7) using gimagex or imagex, mount install.wim and then dismount wim with commit changes. this should take a while around 20 minutes depending on pc. u should only need to do this once to a wim unless u start from afresh

    8) go back to the vlite wimfltr folder and rename wimfltr2.sys to wimfltr.sys (also rename wimfltr.sys back to wimmount.sys)

    9) right click wimfltr.inf and install again. this will copy the vista version back to system32\drivers

    10) use vlite

u may need to switch between the 2 filters when using imagex and vlite

This is interesting. I thought I had something wrong with my pc after all the uninstall and install of these components yesterday when it took that 20min to work with waik2. I thought I tried something similar because I was trying different things with vlite and the filters. I just tried this and didn't get the winlogon error but did get an error with installing some components. Might be my vlite session. Can you post your session you are using to achieve this and I will try? This might be the reason the regtweak doesn't work either is because of the filter version.
