  1. I already knew of pendrivelinux (OP) but XBOOT looks interesting. I'll have a look as soon as I can
  2. Am I the only one interested in such tools? What does everyone else use? Let's say you want seatools, wd diag, Windows 7 and an offline antivirus scanner... would you have individual DVDs/USB drives for each?
  3. I've come across a whole lot more machines that work fine once updated but I can't find standalone drivers so that I can deploy them without attending the machines themselves.
  4. I found this really nice tool that allows you to make your own multiboot USB drive, but the ISO choices are pre selected, you can't have more than one instance and can't be configured (as far as I know). I'm looking for something similar but to also be able to put both a Win7 installation option and a WDS discovery too. Also, I would like it I could update the anti virus definitions on the AV options (probably possible to do manual on the USB stick afterwords but prefer something more automatic) P.S. I have a feeling this topic will get moved (it is neither a multi boot DVD nor a install from USB question)
  5. This is a really useful tool maxXPsoft. That's 1/2 of what I was looking for . It would still be useful if end users could get their hands on the packages that WU downloads. I'll give it a try and report back but from a quick look around, it does what I need Just tried driver magician and it successfully backed up the driver I needed but the driver was no longer signed when I tried to reinstall it (received a warning when installing and says "Not digitally signed" under Driver Signature: ) There must be a way to get your hands on the drivers that windows update finds...
  6. I can install XP audio drivers to Windows 7 by setting the setup.exe file in compatibility mode for XP SP3. How can I do this on SCCM 2007 or in the command line for deployment. The driver is packaged using installshield. -s mode is supported and tested to work in 7 but only if the compatibility mode has been set.

  8. Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not sure if all drivers end up there. Is there any way of finding out where the setup files are for a sound card, for example, once the driver is installed?
  9. I am trying to find the driver repository that windows 7 uses when you select the in device manager or through windows update. The reason I'm asking is that I needed a 3com drive for my WinPE image but stumbled across a few problems because the latest driver wasn't digitally signed so didn't want to work in Winpe initially. Once installed, Windows 7 found a slightly newer version of the driver and I thought I could use it for my boot image. I tried http://catalog.update.microsoft.com but couldn't find it there. Device manager calls the driver If I update the driver and let windows look for a better version I get this: This is what it says on the NIC itself
  10. the least you'll need to do is reinstall your drivers with 64-bit support. applications can be 32-bit most of the time. don't let the name of the operating system fool you, they are completely different windows xp x86 is a different operating system compared to windows xp x86-64 windows vista x86 is a different operating system compared to windows vista x86-64 64 bit vista has better support in terms of 64 bit drivers and applications than xp 64 bit but that mostly applies to hardware/software that came out after vista was released.
  11. i have managed to move the entire Documents and Settings (and hence user profiles) to a drive letter other than where the system resides (d: instead of c: ) with nlite. i'm now trying to move the d: partition on an entirely separate device. how do i tell windows to read/write to the new device? i can swap the d: drive with another partition letter but then windows comes up with an error about not being able to find the user profile when you try to log on. strangely you can log on with a profile that you had before swapping the d:drive (all settings are lost) but new accounts can't even log on. for example: log on with administrator --> create "test" account --> assign d: to another partition/device --> restart. administrator can still log on (no settings or wallpaper) but test can not. windows must assign the partition/volume a GUID and ignore the drive letter. there must be a way to edit this GUID. thanks for looking
