  1. Hello again.

I have now used some few days to try and find out where the problems is when like Windows Features, Group Policy Editor, Snipping Tool, Sticky Notes etc etc have failed to work.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate RC2 Build 7229 (64-bit) installed in VirtualBox now, and it's working perfect here now. So i'm soon gonna install it for real on my computer.

So by this, everything are working out of the box after how i vLited it. But i don't know how it will work after you start to install programs and that. But i believe it will work pretty nice, hopefully.

I will give you 2 pictures with the things i haven't checked to be removed under. There are 85 things i haven't removed.

    vLite Part 1 & vLite Part 2

This is what's not removed. And when i have removed the other things there, the ISO file takes 1.79 GB.

I can probably remove some few more things though, but don't think i want to take the risk of removing any more stuffs if i want a stable and fully working Windows 7. Will ofc try to remove more and try Windows 7 out in VirtualBox and will update this post if i find Windows 7 to still be rock stable and fully working when i have removed more things there though.

I found the 'Fax Support' to screw up the 'Windows Features' thing in Windows if you remove the 'Fax Support'. Help will also screw up Windows Features like it was told in the first post in this topic.

I think Printer Support and TV-Tuner Support also breaks the Windows Features to. But i'm keeping those anyways, because you never know when you will need a Printer or when you will get a TV-Tuner card. And who need Modem support today  ?. Yes this one is removed to.

Edit: I found Windows Search to break Windows Features to if you remove Windows Search. If you want to remove it, then do it in Windows Features in Windows 7.

When it's about the Services you can disable etc. Then i found the service 'Problem Reports and Solutions Control Panel Support' to be needed / enabled. If you stop that service you wont be able to start the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services. And if you can't start those 2 services, then you can't install any new audio drivers or get the sound to work.

But i wouldn't just start to disable lots of services if you don't know 100% on what service your disabling. Well it might not be a problem though, because you can luckily enable the services again in Windows after you have installed Windows 7.

Some services will make some of the features / things in Windows to stop working if you disable them, so just be carefull on what your disabling.

But i have disabled lots of services and still have a fully working Windows 7 though :thumbup . But that's because i know what i'm doing heh.

So just keep those things as i haven't removed in vLite if you want a fully working Windows 7 Ultimate RC2 Build 7229 (64-bit).

I hope this helps some of you here with some of the problems you might have.

Hey Tom check out the elite preset in the first post or PM and i will send u my custom personal preset. My install with DVD maker and games deleted. winsxs backup deleted, wallpapers and sounds as well and the drive compression turned on my 64 bit install was a total of 2.8 gigs and my ISO file for the install was about 1.7 gigs (Build 7232 x64). I will add your findings to the main post about windows search and the fax removal causing windows features to break. My audio services are started and i have the error reporting services disabled i actually removed it using vlite. My X-Fi titanium works like a dream. No point in keeping the TV support if your not keeping media center. If you have any questions i would be more then glad to help but you can definitely remove more without consequence.

  2. Great job guys (dead0 & Jeronimo) :) As far as the winsxs/backup folder i always delete it haven't had any issues with that. Scripts are very nice will have to give them a whirl. So far loving this build 7232 it works really well and its pretty much close to final. :thumbup

  3. @liquid0624: great first post!

Few questions though. Would be nice to include reasoning for protected files see my post here for example.

With build 7137 I had no installation issues when removing the following components: Game Explorer, Snipping Tool, Welcome Center, Windows Firewall, Internet Connection Sharing.

    What changed for these components?

I have no idea but something changed, well the snipping tool and welcome center always reappeared when i try ed removing them. Game Explorer Firewall And Internet Connection Sharing i will attempt again at some point but they all cause the install to error out before it finishes completing before you get to the screen of were you put your user name in. Check out the Ultra preset made that one just for you buddy it removes like everything possible :):thumbup

I will try removing those again one by one with build 7232 and i will report back then.

PS i will add the dll reasons from your post thank you much :)

  4. Liquid can you help write a guide for me coz i follow the guide of dead0 but the tweak show "access denied".

Write a guide of what ? The vlite mini guide is in the first post of this thread and the guide for the DISM stuff that dead0 wrote is like on page 2 or 3 towards the middle bottom.

  5. OK mate sounds good let me know when u get on MSN sometime would love to chat wit you :)

Good find with the Group Policy Object Editor and DFS Removal I added it to the main post.

  6. ps liquid, does the group policy snapin in either of your presets still function? also does the event viewer show any errors in application & system?

I have one error under Application. None under System. I think it has to do with removing System Restore

The Cryptographic Services service failed to initialize the VSS backup "System Writer" object.

  7. No i can't figure out whats breaking the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) Other then that the ELITE preset would be the way to go keeps the most functionality. The ULTRA preset removes a lot of functionality but is still very usable. :thumbup

  8. Liquid0624, your ULTRA profile try to remove some components that are required for another components NOT selected for removal (i.e. your profile remove LLTD but vLite say that it is required for Network Center). Is this correct ?

underxp, you can safely remove all those things that its warning you about unless u use one of course but the LLTD you can leave it and set the service to disabled. Or you can remove it as well it will not hurt your networking connection at all.

  9. Awesome dude I am glad you like them they work really well and i put a UN godly amount of time into them so that makes this all worth it he he. Plus when RTM does come out now i can just vlite it and don't have to test it b/c i know what works and doesn't work already. Make sure u get the updated ones b/c they are maxed out TOTALLY if you check any more stuff your install most likely will not finish. If anything u have to uncheck using those new presets of mine. :w00t::thumbup

PS good luck with the DISM stuff report your findings to dead0 through PM or this post!

  10. UPDATED the 2 presets in the main post again to remove everything and keep max OS functionality.

The ELITE preset KEEPS file and print sharing with related services, print drivers with support, and windows media player.

The ULTRA preset REMOVES file and print sharing with related services, print drivers with support, and windows media player.

PS (These presets are at there max and this should be the final revision of them ENJOY!) :)

  11. you need to take ownership of the directory, give yourself or your user group full control and then hit the advanced, then change permissions, then select the user group that u see on list with full control and check replace all child objects check box then it should replace the permissions for all files in folders and sub directories and files. :w00t:

  12. Hey.

Does anyone know what i don't have to remove in vLite on Windows 7 Ultimate RC2 Build 7229 (64-bit) to be able to have a 100% working 'Windows Features' where you can turn on or off some of the programs like Windows DVD Maker, Windows Search and the XPS stuffs?.

Report back if keeping help makes the windows features work right thanks Tom! :)

Keep the Help component under the System category :)
