no comment on the "borrowed" key but I suspect something else is the problem with CPU usage did you check for adware and virii? a good idea would be to get a legit operating system, backup all your data, then format and reinstall windows. then you will know all is well, and your conscience will rest EZ

I don't use the MSN messenger, but on several occasions I've seen issues by MSN and AIM it has to do with a plugin to outlook express I took out the startup entry in the registry using RegCleaner, that seemed to take care of it you can also disable the plugin thru outlook express options, but ATM I'm not in front of a computer that has that loaded, so I can't give exact instructions. sorry Good luck

well, I did a little googling, and it seems you aren't the only one with this type of problem unfortunantly, there also didn't seem to be any answers either some suggestions were the ram was faulty, the cd/dvd drive was faulty, or the cd itself may be faulty or dirty if you know someone else with the same version of windows, borrow their cd but use your serial number otherwise you may have hardware issues I also searched the microsoft knowledge base with no success either

I see. I had a similar problem in my dos class when I had put the a: drive in my path command, so I'm wondering if for some reason windows is looking there for files or something try a good registry cleaning program like RegCleaner and see if that clears it up

if you don't use the floppy, you could always unplug it 2nd, norton is set by default to scan floppies on shutdown when is the self checking happening?

if you can get ahold of an original XP PRO cd, you can use that to make a backup/unattended install. I use a floppy setup so I can change the serial, user info, and misc other things to make it match the serial and other info for each computer.

all the poor guy has to do is create HIS cd of home, pro, corp pro and then it would work he could even incorporate the latest service packs and freebie programs like Adobe Reader, Zonealarm and others why do you think I did mine the way I do it? It's legal to make a backup copy, and with the floppy he can change the serial number for the version of XP he is working on, and as a bonus enter user info as well so far all the home version serials I have run into all work, and I've only found 2 versions of Pro, the regular and the corporate why is this so difficult?

AHHH, I remember how I banged my head on the desk during the early days of figuring out the unattended thingy now I script my winnt.sif and tweak files on floppy, all but cmdlines.txt . That one has only 1 line to create my user account the winnt.sif file is scripted to point to the floppy in the guirunonce section. this way I can customise what gets installed, as well as usernames, passwords software installed etc. XP and 2000 always look to the floppy for an answer file, so it was natural to do. the pain comes in when a computer doesn't have a floppy most still have the floppy connector, so adding a temp drive is a solution, it's the laptops that remain a pain so I created a batch file that copies appropriate files over to my XPCD files, creates an ISO image, then replaces/deletes said files very handy for XP home installations where each code needs to be unique

guess that's why I'm a fan of DVD/RW but I sold my old test machine, so now I have to swap drives to test new tweaks and additions

Personally, I'm a batch file man haven't figured out the runonceex.cmd thingy yet I guess it makes sense my question is, does cmdlines.txt automatically know the runonceex.cmd is in the $OEM$ or does it need a path to know that? and is $OEM$ the correct place to put it on the cd?

I can't answer all of the problems, but the nero should read more like %systemdrive%\install\Apps\Nero6\nero6600.exe /silent /noreboot /no_ui /sn=xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx /write_sn now I use batch file on a floppy to run my stuff, and when I run into a problem, I echo out the line that seems to be causeing the problem, just to make sure the rest works. Maybe you could move the java entry down to the bottom of the list and see if all works then

Access is a database program, and from the looks of http://www.openoffice.org/product/dbase.html , it just might do it funny that the website address says dbase I thought that program was dead

well, there's things wrong with that winnt.sif file but when you say the cd won't run, what is it you are saying? Is it not bootable? did you actually create that winnt.sif file using the setupmgr.exe from microsoft? there's lots of info on the unattended guide at http://unattended.msfn.org/ unfortunantely it's rather hard to help with so little info btw, the oempreinstall=yes would be a good place to start if you are adding more software oh, and the software key just isn't a proper key for XP either

did you perhaps install zonealarm pro? if so, the privacy settings will block animations. go to the adblocking section, click the custom button, and deselect the animation option then it will work other than that

could it be that once you have SP1 installed, then the drive would show up correctly? hint, if that's the problem, then slipstream SP1 onto your disk using the http://unattended.msfn.org/ guide and it will report correctly immediately

or the registry tweak page in the unattended section has a pretty nice compilation of tweaks it's in an attached file you might even find stuff in there that you didn't think of prepare for some reading tho, it's alot of text
