  1. under explorer 7, After I double click C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts and select notepad to open, it automatically make the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc window active, instead of it should make the notepad window active.

    no problem in explorer 8.

I also tested it same thing happened in a clean installation of Windows 8 Core RTM x86 in VMware.

here is Windows 8 Core RTM x86.

  2. Windows 8 now requires the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" Service running as it hosts the OpenGL compositer which is now required for the Windows 8 Explorer shell to run. This was not the previously the case in Windows 7 and you'd just get the 'Native Unskinned' UI, could save considerable resource by disabling the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" and "Themes" Services, avoid ssues with some applications and gamas that use OpenGL and/or DirectX, and also see substantial performance improvements with some applications and games...

I'm wondering if the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" Service can now be stopped with Tihiy's shell installed/enabled,

unlike Windows 7, there's no "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" service in services.msc in Windows 8.

    if you delete C:\Windows\System32\dwm.exe

under explorer7, you can enter desktop after reboot, but black screen after logoff and logon ie you lose the ability to logoff I don't think it's a big problem though.

under explorer8, unable to enter desktop after reboot, black screen instead. it's also a black screen after switch explorer7 to explorer8. ie dwm.exe is necessary for explorer8.

  3. Yes it is. That show desktop button is invisible in both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

It is visible in Windows 7:

Ah, my bad, I remembered incorrectly for Windows 7.

Now I think I'm fine with the visible show desktop button under explorer7, it doesn't have to mimic the invisible show desktop button as Windows 8.

  4. My version of bypassing Metro UI after logon doesn't require any tool or programm and does it in a nativ way. - You won't see Metro at all while login. - Also not the 1-2 sec. right after the login.

Unlike Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 won't install Desktop Experience by default, that might be the cause Windows Server 2012 directly boot into desktop. May we should uninstall Desktop Experience from Windows 8 if possible?

I guess you port the Windows Server 2012 startup thingy to Windows 8?

Anyway I'm looking forward to your script or tutorial for disable Windows 8 start screen after logon.

  5. here windows 8 RTM Core x64 is non-english (zh-TW), when I right ciick a shortcut to exe on desktop, it shows me "Pin to Start Menu" which sould display in my native language zh-TW here.

  6. Once I used "Driver Magician Lite" to backup drivers under Vista. Some of the backuped drivers unable to install. They must be destroyed by "Driver Magician Lite".

  7. Hi

I remove BITs then vLite told me it is associated with Windows Update, I decided to remove Windows Update too, but I can not find Windows Update option in components list. As well as the .NET 3.0 I wanna remove.

I do remember the two options exist in one of the earlier vLite versions. I hope the author could fix this problem in future relase.
