  1. Has the virus been removed? if not use some AV with bartPE and kill it. THEN try log in. And yes, knowing what OS you are on would be helpfull please!
  2. Attaching your own HDD to your friends pc wont work, since it has a different HAL to your own, and so again - XP wont boot. without further info it is a bit hard to solve your issue, but usually at the XP loading screen crashes are caused by bad drivers, often graphics. what OS where you using before? are you aware that your friend will need his own XP license? what are the machine specs? did you perform a clean install or an upgrade?
  3. never mind in "my computer" screenshot of disk manager and/or partition magic would be more usefull. You say you "deleted partitions" and created two, C & D. Ok... so where is your OS located? Did you APPLY the disk transform? Be carefull what you do with disk partitions if you dont fully understand what you are doing or you could potentially end up in a real mess and with a PC that wont boot.

  5. Thought id post these as some of you might want to do the courses, they are e-learning Security courses from MS. Id recommend that you download the offline e-learning player to use with the courses if you havent used MS e-learning before. These courses are currently clinics, it means microsoft is still assesing them, however they are still very good and usually differ very little, if at all, from the finalised courses - which MS then charge for! so well worth doing, plus doing these you can usually get certified earlier than anyone else (specially if you take a beta exam in conjunction with the courses) Clinic 5936: Introducing Security and Policy Management in Windows Server® 2008 This course is part of Collection 5934: Introducing Windows Server® 2008 (all parts still free!) - prepairing for exam 70-620 which if passed will get you an MCTS certificate, MCTS: Windows Vista – Configuration These following courses are also all free, however no exam is currently associated with them yet, but there might still be in the future! Microsoft Forefront: Clinic 6078: Deploying Microsoft Forefront Client Security Clinic 6079: Managing and Troubleshooting Operations in Microsoft Forefront Client Security Clinic 6080: Deploying Microsoft Forefront Server Security Products Security Guidance Training Series: Clinic 2801: Microsoft Security Guidance Training I Clinic 2802: Microsoft® Security Guidance Training II Clinic 2803: Microsoft® Security Guidance Training III Clinic 2804: Microsoft® Security Guidance Training IV Clinic 2808: Microsoft® Security Guidance Training V Enjoy
  6. You could use "NET USE" Go to command prompt, type in "net use" without the quotes, and it will list what drives you currently have mapped. You can also map to other folders, including ones on remote machines, even if they arent in your domain or workgroup. So long as the folder is shared and you can see it through the firewall etc. If you just want to add quick access to the folder in your "my computer" - you could ask your friend to setup an FTP server on his machine, create you and account and then you can do "Add network location" and put your details in. Or setup a VPN as nitro suggested, VPN or the FTP solution being your best bet, and most reliable.
  7. nearly right nerwin, "RC" stands for "Release Candidate" usually you only get one RC, before the product goes final, however the RC's can go up incrementally until its ready.
  8. Word of warning before you go spending £, MS have since updated the http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-652.mspx page, the exam prep now recommends you do two COLLECTIONS, not two clinics
  9. you could easily do Exam 70-652 TS: Windows Server Virtualization, Configuring. When you pass Exam 70-652: TS: Windows Server Virtualization, Configuring, you complete the requirements for the following certification: • Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS): Windows Server Virtualization, Configuration http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-652.mspx Of the two e-learning courses for it, one of them is still a "clinic" - as in its FREE. (need a windows live account) https://www.microsoftelearning.com/eLearnin...?courseId=95556 The other course is only $39 (£20) https://www.microsoftelearning.com/eLearnin...?courseId=92459 The exam is then £88 from prometric, which hopefully you should pass - and be an MCTS
  10. I dont get it, why merge this thread with one i started SIX YEARS ago? This thread is older than my kids! I want my cookies back!
  11. Out of curiosity - what do you get when logged in as domain admin?
  12. Seen worse! But with the amount of junkfood they eat, that tennant must be as fat as a barn!
  13. Exams at: http://www.prometric.com Many MS courses can be done through E-learning on the microsoft website, depending on the course: http://www.microsoft.com/uk/learning/learn...ng/default.mspx Also, a lot of people simply learn from books/internet before going and taking the exams. I recommend going to http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/offe...ot/default.mspx Register, and get a free voucher from MS/prometric, so that if you fail an exam you can re-sit it again later (after revising!) for FREE. To find your training provider - it depends on the course you want to do. Some trainers only do MCP courses. Some only MCSA/MCSE. some do a whole plethora of stuff, it depends on what the MCT is permitted to teach as well as what the MCT wants to teach! AVOID the £5000 crash course to your MCSA stuff - even if you pass they arent worth the money, and also you might pass the exams but not actually know the material properly! What certification are you looking to achieve?
  14. DRIIIIINK!!!!! Happy birthday bud
  15. in your batch file, you could use the runas command. or: go to start >> Accessories right click on the command prompt shortcut and create a shortcut/send it to desktop. Now right click on the shortcut you just created, and open the properties dialog. go to the "shortcut" tab and click the "advanced" button. A small form will open where you can tick the "Run as Administrator" check box. Use this shortcut to launch your batch. If you are using this as a login / start up script, then why not do it the proper way? go Start >> Computer right click and do "Manage" open the "local Users and groups" branch, in the Users folder, find the user account you want the script to run on, right click and do "Properties" Select the "Profile" tab, and put the path to your logon script in the appropriate box there. If you want the script to run for everyone, then you would apply it to the machine instead of a user, obviously. Hope this helps
  16. If you think your ISP is throttling your line, try turning on encryption in Utorrent. if it doesent help, id leave it turned on anyway, then they dont know WHAT you are downloading at least.
  17. If you are installing machines using RIS, then the machine should keep its name, the machines GUID is stored in AD, so if you reformat the machine with RIS it "knows" the machine and gives it the same name. in AD open the OU called "Domain Controllers" double click on the machine performing your RIS installs (if you have more than one DC then do this from the same machine that is the RIS server) you should see a tab called "remote install" click it and then click "find clients" if it cant find any then remove the filter Servername* and hit find now again. you will see all the machines RIS has setup and also their unique GUIDs.
  18. This Document from Nvidia may help further, it covers RIS installs for a few Nforce Chipsets. It was covered by an NDA but is no longer: DA_01349_001_v05.pdf
  19. yes... Wake On Lan is your option. Unless a timed reboot would also suffice what he wants? is he just wanting to save the expense of running machines overnight when they arent in use? (this can be a lot of money you might be suprised!) If so then yes WOL, if not then you might find this usefull: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317371 Or this, as it can handle both tasks, its freeware: http://dshutdown.dimitrios-coutsoumbas-dimio.qarchive.org/ Hope this helps
  20. Ok... fixed it. silly me left a stray single quote in there, commenting the line out.. DOH! also tweeked it to add trailing slash to end of user profile... can cause funky errors without it there. Working script: On Error Resume Next Set ObjOU=GetObject ("LDAP://OU=" + InputBox("Enter OU To Edit") +",DC=WORKGROUP,DC=LOCAL") objOU.filter=array("user") For Each ObjUser In ObjOU ObjUser.Put "profilePath" , "\\Server2\USER_PROFILES$\" +ObjUser.sAMAccountName +"\" ObjUser.SetInfo Next Set objOU = Nothing
  21. oh well, sorry wrong section. This board seriously needs an Active Directory forum tho.... Anyway, the error above was caused by a dodgy line break at the end of line 5.. shouldnt have been there. Now the script runs with no error. BUT... users profile path doesent seem to be getting set. any ideas?
  22. Im trying to figure out a way to edit a group of users under an OU, tried using script but on running the script i get the error Id like to edit the Profiles path of a group of users and set it to something like: \\someserver\PROFILES$\%USERNAME% ....for every user in the OU i run it on. That or have sort of template setup so everytime a new user is made from now on all the profile and home dir settings are already filled in. does anyone know of a toy do do this, or how to do it with scripting? The script : Set ObjOU=GetObject ("LDAP://OU=" + InputBox("Enter OU To Edit") +",DC=WORKGROUP,DC=LOCAL") objOU.filter=array("user") For Each ObjUser In ObjOU 'ObjUser.Put "profilePath" , "\\Server2\USER_PROFILES$\" + ObjUser.sAMAccountName ObjUser.SetInfo Next Set objOU = Nothing is the one giving the error, running it from cmd prompt.
  23. Incase anyone else has this issue... how i fixed it: I have been having a right brainache for the past 2 days trying to get some new fujitsu machines to boot with RIS on our network. Integrating the Nforce4 Nic drivers wouldnt work and at the point where windows normally copies files to the hdd, RIS would give the "Setup cannot find drivers for your nic..contact Admin.. etc etc" message. I had the correct NIC drivers integrated into the image and also in the answer file, no joy. Also included the driver into i386\system32\Drivers -- again no joy. Driver files dropped into \i386 -- no joy. (restarting BINL each time) It seems theres some issue with RIS finding the card on the board, so doesent load the drivers for it. On searching around i found that you need some files from Nvidia Boot agent to fix it. Download for XP&2k: ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/util...K%26XP_V471.zip I simply dropped these files into the i386 folder, overwritting any of the files in the driver id put there, restarted the BINL service, and magic it now worked I believe this will apply to other nforce4 boards too, not just the fujs***su Esprimo. The Fujitsu also has the headache of using custom drivers too so... if you have issues with default nvidia ones use the ones on the esprimo site/CD. They are motherboard specific too, and the boards differer between E5615 esprimos... nothing to tell you what board is inside you have to use the toy on Fujitsus website. Hope this helps someone out
  24. well ive added a handful.. be good if a few others could reply with what cards you use?
