As for extensions for old Opera, I saw an advice to use web archive http://wayback.archive.org/web/20130429225644/https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/ I also saw and downloaded a huge archive with all the old extensions, but it's hard to find the file now. Maybe it's still on the web somewhere.

I think, there were just theme files, which configured cursors, window colors, background desktop image, and sounds, and were applied just by double-clicking them. They were available for Windows with Active Desktop. And then you could also configure these settings separately via Control Panel. But that was long enough ago, so I'm not sure if this is correct.

No, I liked interface of Vista/7. In fact, when I saw Vista, I understood that this is BEAUTIFUL!! And they had the best Start Menu ever. How could MS drop Aero and Start menu in 8 and 10?! As far, as I remember, only original Windows 95 without any OSR could run on 4 Mb RAM. I actually saw Windows 95 and some old version of MS Office on 486 with 4 Mb RAM, and it was sooooo slooooowww. My friend tried to install Windows 95 on 386 with 4 Mb RAM, and failed, but I don't remember reason. It seems to be absolutely impossible to run 95 on 2 Mb RAM. BTW, the record for XP was 18 Mb RAM (on some german website). With 16 Mb they were not able to load it.

That's right, a year or so ago GOG started to "wrap" old games in order to run them on new systems. However, in some cases, I was able to install GOG game to new OS and "unwrap" the game and copy it for the old OS. There was simply a folder with the original old game inside. However, GOG games cannot be installed on Windows 98 directly already.

Not sure about bundles, but you can find many old games on www.gog.com, mostly at decent price.

MiKl, probably it's because this plugins folder contains a plugin that does not work on 9x and prevents Notepad++ from loading.

You are not telling your processor, please tell us more about your hardware configuration. "NV8269" If you have an older NVidia card, maybe you'll have better performance with older driver. With My GeForce2 I had much better performance with some 45~.xx driver version (don't remamber exact one). As for video playing performance, on one of the forums I saw the following advice about best players for weak PCs on Win98, and this advice is based on significant amount of testing of many players and their versions on 400 MHz CPU. AVI - Gom player 2.1.16.4635 DVD - WinDVD 4.0.B11.457C01 with DVD codecs from WinDVD 7 (non free, not sure if obtainable legally) FLV, MP4 - MPlayer (some custom build from 16-07-2009)

Recently I have run my very first computer - Pentium 133 with 16 Mb RAM. In its times it has Windows 95 installed, and it was OK at that time. Now it has Windows 98 installed. It works, but things are slow, and multitasking is bad. However it's usable.

I'd say 256 Mb is not enough (now). I was running a PC with Windows 98 and 256 Mb of RAM for several years (about 2008 - 2012) with lots of experiments and trying to run as much stuff on it as possible. And 256 Mb was not enough for later CASUAL games, which could be run on Windows 98 with Kernel Ex. Not big DVD games, but even smaller casual games. For example, Plants and Zombies hardly run on this PC, and I was not able to see the game's music video. Mainly it was because of amount of RAM, not processor. (Still I was able to complete the game ) For some time I didn't want to buy an additional 256 Mb stick because I didn't want to invest even a small sum of money in that old PC. In 2012 I bought a not used stick for around 12$, and just after a month the PC stopped working completely (it seems, because of HDD controllers on the maindoard). I don't know whether this is because of the "new" stick or not, but now it does not work with or without the stick. The system was faster with some apps and games, but somewhat less stable for that month. Offtop - recently I saw a math puzzle game that requires 2 GB of RAM. Crazy.

I'm sorry - are you running a Program that will take five months to complete ON WINDOWS 98? Are you sure it can stay up that long?

Just my 2 cents: There are replies from Russian Windows 98 forum that this version works OK for them.
