Hy thanks for your reply. The f9 key doesn't work anymore. From asus I was told just press it when the asus logo appears on boot
There was no on screen message before about the f9 key
The laptop can boot into windows at the moment using a generic oem install
If I assign a grove letter to the recovery partition I can see that there still is the data on there

anyone help?

First, sharing best practices is to create groups, not share directly with users. However, if you're using Win7 Home Premium you may not have any other options - best bet would be to create a share using the Advanced sharing button on the share tab, and make sure that both users have the correct sharing access from that window. Also, on the security tab, make sure both users have at least "read & execute" access to the physical folder being shared as well.
It is also worth noting that if you've created a homegroup, the homegroup permissions ALWAYS override specific sharing permissions, so you might want to check that as well.
Lastly, assuming you simply get access denied or your credentials for Paul are rejected after entry in the windows security box by the compaq laptop, it would be worth looking at a network trace to see what exactly is happening in the auth challenge handshake between the sony laptop as user paul and the compaq laptop when attempting to open a share as that user.
hi thanks for your reply, i have checked att the security things and both users have "read & execute" accessto the phisical dolder ( in this case the root of D:\ , i am not using homegroup and it doesnt share everything like programs ect. i get an accsess denined error

1. Open GPMC, click Start, click Run, type gpmc.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the console tree, right-click Default Domain Controllers Policy in Domains\Current Domain Name\Group Policy objects\Default Domain Controllers Policy, and then click Edit.
3. In the Group Policy Management Editor window, in the console tree, go to Computer Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/User Rights Assignment
Like I said, that was for a Windows 2000 DC, try the above.
ok i found the area u mentioned, but u cannot find log on locally, i got log on as a service though, any help?

By default, ordinary users cannot logon locally to a Domain Controller. You will have to give them permission (something I wouldn't recommend). In Windows 2000, there is a utility called "Domain Controller Security Policy", expand Local Policy>User Rights Assignment and add "Authenticated Users" to the "Logon Locally" policy.
As to not finding the Domain Controller, a client uses DNS to locate a Domain Controller, try putting the IP address of the Domain Controller in the TCP/IP settings of the client.
but i dont see Domain Controller Security Policy, only Local Security Policy

hi thanks for your reply.
we dont have a system availible to check the ram as it runs at differant speed to the configs that we currently have,
i have asked him to stip the pc to basics , MB, RAM, CPU, but the problem still happens
he tells me that he is sending the psu back for an exchange. failing that being faulty i think he said somethhing about returning the ram and getting something differant.
