  1. Well, I'm on schedule for a New Year's "upgrade" to Vista x64 Ultimate in January. So I am on my last two months of Windows XP x64 Edition. Almost bittersweet, since I'm looking forward to using something more updated, but my XP x64 installation runs with aplomb!

I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience. IMO it's still the best version of Windows to date.

  2. I'm probably not going to upgrade to Windows 8.1 immediately because I have Windows 8 running fine at the moment. One of the things I don't like about Windows 8.1 is the blatent SkyDrive integration everywhere and as of the latest public beta you can't uninstall this. I obviously won't configure it when I do upgrade to 8.1 but I think that it seems to be a step to perhaps a forced Skydrive integration in future versions of Windows.

  3. My preference for Vista is mostly from an esthetic angle. A lot of people don't care much about "eye candy," but I think it has the most elegant interface of any Windows release. My work involves looking at a PC screen all day long (and sometimes far into the night), and for me a visually appealing UI helps to make the day more pleasant.

Completely agree, though I am trying to get into Windows 8 and I probably will give it another go, there's always VMWare for the Vista fix :)

But yeah not only that I just prefer Vista overall, it's just little things to be honest.

  4. Hi All,

There doesn't seem to be that many people who still use Vista out of choice and coming across a Vista machine in the wild so to speak is becoming more unusual all the time. I've repeatedly tried Windows 7 (and have deployed it to sever hundread machines at work) however at home I much prefer to run Vista and have done since it was released. I've even give Windows 8 RTM a fair trial since it was released in August and I got annoyed with that after a while and just went back to Vista.

So I'm just wondering if there are any other forum members who use Vista out of choice still?

  5. Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I think it also shows nicely the effect of planned obsolence.

I agree to an extent however I do think that Windows NT based OS's are superior to Windows 9x, but in any case, like I said in one of the videos the older applications which do work should just put a message on the installer which says "This Program may not run on your OS, by continuing you accept that we cannot support you with your choice of OS".

  6. First, The forum has changed a lot since I last signed in in September 2008, this is awesome :)

Anyway a few months ago I made a couple of videos featuring Windows 98SE and how it can actually still be quite useful in 2009. I made the videos last year but have just finished writing an article.

  7. I would like to set up a Windows 98 Machine for Business use. (My Application Visual Accounts will not run under WINE On Linux and I don't want to spend money on a Windows XP License as the machine is used for this one program). Anyhow after I've initially set up my 9x machine I will connect it to my workgroup, but then remove the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

I will then use the machine Via a remote desktop application (Does TightVNC work without a keyboard and mouse on the Client PC)? I haven't used 9x for a while so I'm wondering if this will actually work?

  8. I have a Lexmark Z640 printer attached to my Windows Vista Home Premium x64 machine which I have set to share the Printer over my workgroup. I've already checked all of the workgroup details and everything is correct, also file sharing isn't a problem.

However on my XP Machines I can see the Lexmark Printer. Install the drivers and send a print job and it shows up in the Vista print queue however Vista immediately deletes the print jobs without even attempting to print them. What is going on?

  9. Would this configuration be possible, sorry for the paint diagram, Network Notepad doesn't work on Vista x64:

    diagramyo4.jpg

As you can see from this diagram the Dynamode ADSL Router is going into the Main computer which is running Windows Vista Home Premium x64. I changed the MTU settings on this computer to 1492 and I can access any websites.

The second ethernet connection is going from the Dynamode ADSL router to an ME 102 Access point, which is sending the Internet connection through wireless to another ME 102 which is an access point client.

Now obviously I have to change the secondary computer MTU settings to 1492 and this machine runs Windows XP Home Edition sp2 so I can do this through DRTcp. There are two network cards in this machine and Windows XP has been configured to share the Internet connection from NIC 1 (Connected to the ME102) to NIC 2 (Which connects to customers computers when I repair them so I can check the Internet access and do updates.

My question is that now I accept the only way to do this with Orange is to change the MTU settings on every machine but is there any way I can set up a method on the secondary machine so I don't have to change the MTU settings on the customers machines as this could cause problems when they take them home?

  10. Office 2000 sucessfully installs on Vista and it runs fine. Though the thing is all updates have to be done manually, office update is not compatible with Vista though it works fine for Office 2000 on XP. Microsoft Update will not work for Office 2000 and I don't need to upgrade to a newer version on this machine. I have been applying updates manually though I am certain that I'm either missing some or applying the wrong updates for the chosen packages that I have installed.

Is there any way I could update Office 2k on Vista using a Web based frontend such as Office Update on Microsoft's Website? Remember that Microsoft Update doesn't find updates for Office 2000.

  11. I have three Hard Drives in my setup:

    2x 160GB Drives

    1x 80GB Drive

All Hard Disk drives are SATA. Vista is using the two 160GB hard Drives. One is Drive C:\, the other one is a storage drive.

The Third hard drive (80GB) is formatted to EXT3 and it contains an install of Ubuntu Linux. The problem is, Vista will spin up this hard drive and it will be running the entire time Vista is in use (I Could make the Hard Drives spin down when not active, but this means that the 160GB storage drive will spin down, because of the times the Storage drive is used I do not want it to spin down the drive as it is not good for it in the long run.

In other words I would like the 80GB drive to just spin down when Vista is started and not to be used at all by Vista. Because of what I said above I can't use the Spindown after a certain period of time option because it affects the Storage drive too.
