  1. Woot! The Magic Penguin strikes again! :wub: I'm sorry to have pooped up the thread with this stuff, but it's been so long since I've done without the MS JVM that I can't even remember what Microsoft and 3rd party applications I have that grind to a halt without it. :blushing:

    All I can say is: "Are we ever lucky to have Gurgelmeyer!" It will be interesting to benchmark equivelent service setups on a properly patched Gurgelmeyered™ installation of Windows 2000 vs. Server 2003 and Windows XP...

    :)

  2. RyanVM isn't trolling. Did you read the linked material?

    Yes, did you? In fact I read the thread in entire, and the title/topic post only emphasizes the point I made here, and that others were trying to make in the MS JVM thread that RyanVM's post has no bearing on and is not pertinent to...

    MS doesn't include it's Java in its  operating systems anymore.

    Yes, I know, it should be pretty obvious I acknowledge this in my post...

    It was a victim of their embrace and extend, had security flaws, got lotsa patches, Sun won the lawsuit, MS dropped their proprietary version. Which is, in fact, a JVM based on version 1.1, which dates from 1997.

    Well thanks for the embellished, incomplete and not entirely accurate history lesson; but I really don't need one, and it has virtually no bearing on the veracity of the MS JVM for those that need or perfer it for specific applications.

    (Not saying it's good or bad, simply explaining that when RyanVM says what he says, he isn't trolling)

    Well then call it a post not germane to the topic; I seriously doubt that most people that post to these fourms don't know the history of the Microsoft/Sun/Java litigation in considerable detail that is way beyond the scope and not germane to the topic.... What you and RyanVM clealy miss, misunderstand or ignore is the value and veracity of the MS JVM; the fact that even though Microsoft no longer officially offers or supports it -- that it still outperformas the Sun's JRE for many applications considerably and is arguably (for your benifit), as, or more secure with Microsoft's updates than the Sun JRE.

    The point, of the post in this thread is there are those that need the Microsoft JVM for specific applications compiled specifically for or optimised for it -- that either run poorly or not at all on the Sun JRE, and that it would be nice to be able to install and uninstall a secure and fully patched MS JVM... Sorry that this has appearently escaped you (and RyanVM) in both threads...

    :blink:

  3. Gurgelmeyer!? I know you have your hands full with work and commitments a plenty that will likely keep you busy indefinitely -- but I have to ask: How about an "Unofficial Gurgelmeyer/Microsoft JVM Roll-up"?

    A lot of people still prefer the Microsoft JVM over Sun's Java JRE as it's: smaller, required for and/or still faster for some applications, and with all its patches as secure as Sun's JRE.

    The last release of the JVM was 3810 (available here and elsewhere) but there are a confusing slew of patches... As some would like to install the JVM and others JRE it would be nice to be able to install a fully updated Microsoft JVM that was secure from go, rather then having to search for 3810, then have to remember to go to Microsoft Update and pick the JVM updates. This would also (ideally) make cleanly installing and uninstalling the Microsoft JVM a clean and simple one step process...

    This project would benefit Users of ever flavor of Windows -- 2000, XP, and Server 20003. As your understanding of Microsoft's patch and packaging system internals seems to be the best in the biz, it would be nice if you were the guy to give this 'the Gurgelmeyer treatment', to see it done right -- if and/or when you'd have time to get around to such a thing...

    :wub:

  4. I'm not "advertising" anything, I started this thread because the discussion about it was swamping and taking Gurgelmeyer's Windows 2000 "Hotstream" Project thread off topic, and people were asking for more information -- go look for yourself.

    It's quite simply a fact that there are claims that memory manager of Server 2003 has received code optimization that improves memory management, resource overhead, i/o throughput, and memory fragmentation... I don't recall the various sources I've come across discussing and documenting it, but it's mentioned in several MSDN articles, Server 2003 reviews -- and even Gurglemeyer found the SP5 Server 2000 hotfix that was offered for Server 2000 (and works on Windows 2000) that had XP users bawling about it because of the performance improvement it offered (and is probably why Microsoft no longer has information on the fix and several others like it for Windows/Server 2000).

    Microsoft doesn't want Windows XP (or Windows 2000) to be their best performing OS, they want older iterations of the OS to be self-obsolescing and not appear faster, more mature, and stable then forthcoming products, i.e. Longhorn; which is quite a chore as Longhorn is a resource pig and will almost certainly be hard to market on the basis of technical merit.

    I'm not going to indulge in argument, track down URLs on Microsoft or the Bink sites for you as I really don't care what you believe with regard to the memory management code in various Microsoft Operating Systems products, or Microsoft's marketing motivations... You are clearly unwilling and/or interested in demonstrating any evidence for your hostile post; which raises the question why are you trolling on the mere basis of opinion and asking for facts when you offer none... But I don't care; anyone that honestly interested in the matter can research the subject for themselves.

    The sole point of this thread was for people that asked for more information about "POWER LiTE 1.74" -- of which I know very little beyond what I've posted -- which I have clearly explained as I don't speak or read Polish.

    :rolleyes:

  5. Hi :) About the memory-thing, a "hotfix" which replaces the memory manager with a low-fragmention one is already part of the SP5.  I don't remember it's number, and I don't feel like reading >300 KB-articles once more to find out :blink: - but it's there - trust me!

    YES! I do remember reading about the memory manager hotfix, god knows wher amazing that you've made the effort to find and include this!

    :D

  6. If that were true why would:

    · the files have different CRCs and version numbers?

    · Microsoft claim the kernel and memory manager has been improved & optimised?

    · Server 2003 boot faster then XP with identical settings and configuration?

    · the commit charge be smaller for identical system configurations?

    · the systems benchmark differently with identical configurations?

    · professional Reviewers say the memory manager in 2003 is improved?

    · Server 2003 perform better then XP on identical memory benchmarks?

    But honestly I don't care, I was responding to the intersts of others by creating this thread not inviting a lot of baseless and unsupported criticism... If you have something in the way of evidence and fact to support your opinions I'd be interested to read it... otherwise...

    :rolleyes:

  7. Well many of the 'Windows 2003 As A Workstation' crowd have shown it to perform better for various applications, and even turn better performance with some games...

    This appears to be feature of the memory controller; combine that with the fact that someone has gone to considerable trouble to create this tweak/application suggests it has veracity for some.

    ;)

  8. In the interest of keeping the integrity of Gurgelmeyer's Hotsteam Project thread intact (my apoligies Gurgelmeyer for my part in the digression) I've started a new thread on the forums here with more information...

    For those distracted by this full page intermission discussing the mysterious Windows XP POWER LiTE and unfamiliar with the HotStream Project (the actual subject of this thread) and what Gurglemeyer is doing/has accomplished, summarily he's created an 'Unofficial Service Pack 5' for Windows 2000 that:

    · is better then the Microsoft SPs or Rollup

    · uses the same structure as an Official Service Pack

    · does not incorporate some of the flaws of an Official Service Pack

    · fixes issues Microsoft has not resolved

    · incorporate lost and undocumented fixes

    · will improve Windows 2000 compatability

    · will offer some 2000/XP parity

    · allows for slipstreaming just like an 'Official' Service Pack

    · includes SP5 hotfixes and patches

    · includes all known and many unknown SP, rollup, patches, and fixes

    Why the MSFN Admins and Moderators have not given Gurgelmeyer and the HotStream Project it's own sub-forum or at the very least made this thread sticky is beyond me...

    :}

  9. In Gurglemeyer's amazing Hotstream Project (clicky) thread, I mentioned an interesting and mysterious file on bittorrent called Windows XP POWER LiTE 1.74 that claims to install "memory controler from Windows 2k3 Server" with commersurate performance improvements.

    The discussion there started to swamp Gurglemeyer's thread which is about an almost certainly more interesting and valid project. For those unfamiliar with the HotStream Project and what Gurglemeyer is doing/has accomplished; summarily he's created an 'Unofficial Service Pack 5' for Windows 2000 that:

    · is better then the Microsoft SPs or Rollup

    · uses the same structure as an Official Service Pack

    · does not incorporate some of the flaws of an Official Service Pack

    · fixes issues Microsoft has not resolved

    · incorporate lost and undocumented fixes

    · will improve Windows 2000 compatability

    · allows for slipstreaming just like an 'Official' Service Pack

    · includes SP5 hotfixes and patches

    · includes all known and many unknown SP, rollup, patches, and fixes

    · will offer some 2000/XP/2003 performance, security, compatability and relieability parity

    But for those interested in XP POWER LiTE 1.74 what ever it might be here's all the information I have...

    The 'mystery' of the project stems from the fact that it's all in Polish, and doesn't appear to have a stabile web site, forum, or any manner of documentation.

    Windows XP POWER LiTE 1.74, subtitled: "with memory controler from Windows 2k3 Server"... The Developer's last known web site was dead for a while but now doesn't appear to be the original site... I found the file on bittorrent, the actual file name is Windows_XP_PLD_1.74.exe (335.79Kb) it's a compressed installer that contains:

    · NTDETECT.COM 47Kb

    · NDLDR 272Kb

    · four "reg" files: 1.reg, 64.reg, 128.reg, 256.reg, 512.reg

    · power.bat

    The contents of the text files are as follows:

    Hopefully now those interested in this and swamping Gurglemeyer's Hotstream Project Thread will take their discussion HERE...

    :huh:

  10. I'm sorry I just assumed you guys would know more about it then I do. The name of the project is: Windows XP POWER LiTE 1.74, subtitled: with memory controler from Windows 2k3 Server... It's definately not the "Mindows Project"... :rolleyes:

    The guys web site here was dead for a while but now doesn't appear to be the original site... :unsure: I found the file on bittorrent, the actual file name is Windows_XP_PLD_1.74.exe (335.79Kb) it's a RAR installer that contains NTLDR, a reg file, and some other stuff (can't remember what all)...

    I didn't have Windows XP installed at the time I downloaded it, don't read Polish, thought what little there was in English sounded very compelling but didn't trust the whole affair and deleted the thing... I've since learned the same guy made something called Windows 2002 Optimizer...

    And that folks is all I know...

    :}

  11. Gurgelmeyer, I haven't seen 'Powered but I've played with Windows 2000 embedded, and I have absolutely no idea how you'd roll SP4 or even slipstream it considering how this version of Windows works...

    The Embedded edition of Windows uses a sort of Lego/Tinker-Toy like 'Target Designer' that manually creates a Windows image file, it's nothing like the install images we see for NT, 2000, XP, or Server 2003... The images you create can be so feature barren that installer based products can't even be installed to them...

    Perhaps you're supposed to manually extract SP4 and individually replace files? Haven't really played with Windows embedded enough to know, one way or another... There are feature complete and fully functional demos around however...

    On a totally unrelated note there is a Polish guy that created a patch that replaces the Windows XP memory manager with the Server 2003 memory manager that apparently improved XP boot time and applicaton performance... I wonder if this same method would work on Windows 2000 and offer similar performance improvement. The files were taken from an SP or hotfix apparently but all the documentation is in Polish so it's pretty hard to see what he's actually doing but there were some favorable fourm posts about it.

    :}

  12. "Stay tuned"  - FINAL RELEASE BEFORE MONDAY (ouch -- my ears....)

    I for one can wait; I know how tedious and fussy all this stuff is (more then enough work for one person), and would much rather it was released "when it's ready" then see a frazzled and burned out Gurgelmeyer rush to please everyone, and then have to deal with annoying and silly issues after the fact.

    Remember it's Microsoft not Gurgelmeyer that was dragging it's heels, has broken promises, and not only made all this necessery, but has repeatedly missed release dates.

    Don't pressure the Gurgelmeyer -- he is your "Fwend"!

    :hello:

  13. Gurgelmeyer! :D

    Will you be releasing the 'full cumulative' edition of SP5 (I hope so :blushing:)? I'm sure there are many willing parties that would be willing to host it; sites like Major Geeks etc. have all the badwidth and space.

    If you don't have the time to track down hosts for such sutff I'm sure there are more then a few willing parties here that would do the leg work for you (me among them)...

    Also if you'd like some help writing some lucid documentation for the project I'd be willing...

    :hello:

  14. Considering the volume of work and care Gurgelmeyer has put into this project -- and that:

    · it will be done better then the Microsoft SPs or Rollup

    · it fixes things Microsoft has not

    · incorporate lost and undocumented fixes

    · will improve Windows 2000 compatability

    · will offer some 2000/XP parity

    · allows for slipstreaming just like a Service Pack

    · includes SP5 hotfixes and patches

    I think Gurgelmeyer should name his project "The Unofficial Windows Service Pack 5" to garner it the recognition and appreciation a project of this magnitude deserves -- and equally importantly help people correctly understand what is being offered.

    I also hope Gurgelmeyer might offer some rudimentary documentation of what he's done and how he did it for the future sustainablity of the project in his absence, or in the absence of his enthusiasm.

    Gurgelmeyer is offering Fans of Windows 2000 that like the simplicity and cleaner design of this iteration of Window, and those stuck with Windows 2000 for logistic or financial reasons a new lease on longevity and sustainability. Considering the closed nature of the OS, and Microsoft's spotty support and awkward patch design we couldn't be luckier then to have someone of Gurgelmeyer's caliber working on such a project!

    :)

  15. Really wish this thread was sticky or had it's own forum... Actually wish the 2000, XP, 2003 forum wasn't one big... steaming pile -- for fourms dedicated to Windows it sure could be better laid out and organized... :}

    With all the priceless content here a little fourm housekeeping and updating could do wonders!

    :blushing::)

  16. I'd say don't bother telling them; you've clearly put more then your fair share time and a considerable labor of love into this project Gurgelmeyer! I'd say let your exclusive fixes remain yours; heck you're giving it all away for free anyway, that's more then enough -- if Microsoft cares let them make the effort or they can offer to pay you!

    I think you deserve every bit of credit you get for all you've done/are doing, don't trivialize your efforts -- it's perfectly fitting that if people want a proper fix for Windows 2000 they should have to go to a committed third party that's doing it all in the open and for free -- that, your good will, everyone's enthusiasm the Penguin are pretty telling. :)

    On another but related topic; does anyone know what's up with the Microsoft security rollup; I thought it was supposed to be released last week?

    :}

  17. Wow, just finished reading this thread in entire -- what an ambitionus project! Nice way to wrap up all the loose ends of Windows 2000!

    Might be fun to integate all this work in one installer (with selectable options) and an integrated script to rip, slipstream, iso, and burn a fully updated Windows 2000 (for Noobs) -- there's even the free MS ISO burn tool that makes it all possible

    Any any case I'm sure looking forward to seeing all the Hotstream Project released with everyone else here -- this one deserves it's own forum!

  18. One thing that may not work for some Server 2003 SP1 users with AMD 64 processors is Cool'n'Quiet™ CPU throttling. Previous to SP1 you needed to set your power management settings to the default "Minimal Power Management" profile to get Cool'n'Quiet™ to work with some AMD 64 processors; now this profile is no longer available since I slipstreamed SP1 on Server 2003 and Cool'n'Quiet™ doesn't work.

    Does anyone have a non slipstreamed or as yet not updated installation of Server 2003 that can look at the "Minimal Power Management" profile and post the exact settings here?

    :}

  19. Does anyone know how to uninstall Remote Administration Tools which are installed by default on a slipstreamed Server 2003 Web installation?

    When I try to uninstall I get nearly complete uninstallation prgress and then an error message: "Fatal error during installation"... The system log shows virtually the same message with no more helpful information...
