  1. Howdy, 78 year old man here who is running a dual boot with Windows 10 and Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 and planning to upgrade to LMDE3 shortly (as soon as our family refugees from power loss due to Michel leave so I can devote uninterrupted  time to doing my computer upgrades and maintenance).

I HAVE A hp COMPUTER WITH A 2 TB HDD AND A QUAD CORE ATHLON CHIP. ORIGINALLY PURCHASED WITH WINDOWS 8 INSTALLED, BUT UPGRADED TO WINDOWS 10 WHILE IT WE AVAILABLE FREE.

MY QUESTION: IF i RESTORE FROM THE RESTORE PARTITION, WILL IT GO BACK TO WINDOWS 8 OR REMAIN A WINDOWS 10 OPERATING SYSTEM??

It is just full of junk and garbage that I would like to clean up. My files are backed up on an external HDD.  I'd really just like to clean up my Windows 10 to the basics and then add back my files and programs.

I do plan to, as mentioned above, replace LMDE2 Mate with LMDE3 Cinnamon.

Thanks for any comments, answers, snide remarks, etc.

  2. Recently upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1. I had my 8.1 set up so my computer would login whenever I booted to Windows without using any password, etc. Now, after upgrading it requires my Outlook.com and my outlook.com password to do so. How can I change it to open Windows 10 without going through a log-in procedure every time?

    Thanks,

  3. Thank you for the advice. The current hard disks are OEM as I have learned tolet my wife have her own computers and to keep my hands off. Ideally, I would like to sync them via our LAN so they could be automatically backed up on some sort of schedule. Any advice along these lines would also be appreciated.

If I may also pick your brain about another topic, I would appreciate some more advice.

I, myself, have a HP Envy which has a quad core Athlon chip, 12 Gigs of RAM, and a 2 tib HDD. I have a seperate  2 TiB external HDD dedicated to it. This computer came with Windows 8.1 which I set up on its own 500 GB partition. I also installed Linux Mint Debian Edition, moving my files to it from an older computer. Just this past week. It is now on its own 800+GB partition.

Wihtin the past 10 days, I have also installed on its own 800+ GB partition Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 (Betsy) which is supposed to remain a rolling distro. I elected to do this so I could copy my files to LMDE2 in a well ordered manner. I have to confess that the files on the Windows 8.1 and LMDE wwere not added hodgepodge.

My question: what is the best way to back up this whole 3 partitioned hard drive on the HP computer to the external HDD in order to be certain that I do not accidentally lose everything on all 3 partitions until I get LMDE2 (Betsy) properly and completely set up?

You also need to know that I only boot to Windows 8.1 about once a month to keep it updated and let it self maintain. I use LMDE2 well over 99% of the time as I much prefer Linux.

Once setting up LMDE2, I will eliminae the LMDE partition and expand the LMDE2 partition. (at the rate I'm going, this might take several months because I have so many interests other than computers which take up a lot of my time. Before I retired, my retired friends told me to get everything done before I retired because after retiring, I would have no free time. They were right!!

    Thanks,

  4. I would appreciate some advice and sugestions. My wife has a desktop with Win 7 which has a 1TiB HDD and a Laptop running Win 8.1 with a 700 Gig HDD. She has purchased a 2 TiB external hard drive and asked me to back both of her computers up on it.

My gut feeling is to partition the external hard drive and use each computer's back up program to back the computers up to separate  partitions. However, I would like to be able to occasionally bring these backups up to date without having to wipe the HDD and start all over again. So, in order to keep her happy, I'd appreciate some advice.

I need to add that she considers her computers to be tools and, like her cars, she wants them to work without necessarily understanding why.

However, I am pretty much a Linux guy, giving up on Windows several years ago, but I've tried to stay as up to date as possible with Windows since my wife is wedded to them.

I would appreciate advice and suggestions, please. I am reposting this on the in 8 forum also.

  7. Howdy,

Would appreciate some help. I have an "antique" IBM Thinkpad With Windows XP.

It has a 133Mhz Pentium III, 384mb RAM, a 20 Gig HDD and dates back probably as far as Thinkpads go. I need the video controller (VGA) compatibel driver (PCI\VEN_5333&DEV_8C2E&SUBSYS_01FC1014&REV_O5\4&45A7597&)

I also need a driveer for an unknown device. I suspect if I can find the Video driver, I can find the unknown device's driver at the same site.

The only other info I can give you is that it is TYPE 4367 and manufactured by IBM in Mexico. I am hoping to put a Linux distro on it because if certainly will not run any higher version of Windows.

    Thanks for any assistance.

  8. Thanks, I'll have to figure out how to snapshot the page as I am running Linux Mint Debian Edition about 99% of the time. I do have a dual boot with Windows 8.1 which I just booted to to get the Windows updates. The next time I boot to Windows, I'll see if this is a problem there.

    I appreciate the help.

  9. Thanks for the replies. My reply was delayed as I am an avid ACC Basketball fan and the 1st 2 games today were at noon and 2PM.

Here is the url of Outlook's sign in page with the Outloo.com box on the left side of the page I wish to get rid of.

    Thanks for any help.

  10. Assistance please, and I'm not the most literate computer user so please keep it simple. Our home has 3 computers and 2 printers which I would like to network into a home network.
    1) HP running LMDE connected to a Brother MFC-490cw printer (Computer hardwired to modem)
    2) HP running Windows 7 connected to a Brother MFC_495cw printer (Computer hardwired to modem)
    3) HP Laptop running Windows 8.1 (wireless via same modem)

Additional info: the HP computer running LMDE is partitioned and has a dual boot to Windows 8.1 and LMDE, but I run LMDE 99% of the time.

My question: How can I network these 3 computers?

And also so the Laptop can connect via the network to both of the printers separately?

Any assistance or references would be appreciated.

I have also posted this question on the LMDE forum.

    Thank you.

  11. My computer is a 1 year old reconditioned HP which came with Windows 7. The computer is running a 64 bit OS and programs. Google Chrome worked properly until 3 weeks ago when after Microsoft and Google updates were automatically installed, I began having problems, especially with Outlook.com on Google Chrome only!

     The problems:

The Print and copy functions failed followed at that time followed 2 days ago by a fading and distortion of the monitor screen to the point where I thought my 1 1/2 year old LED monitor was failing. But once I uninstalled Google Chrome, all these problems were resolved and currently I am using IE11.0 without any problems and the computer works fine in all other ways.

I did re-install Google Chrome and the same problems returned.

It appears per the Google Chrome 2014 installation page that this version of Google Chrome is incompatible with Windows 7 64 bit professional.

Google Chrome is my preferred browser, so any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

  12. Assistance, please. I am running Windows 8.1 on two computers and Windows 7 on a 3rd. My printers (Brother MFC-490cw and MFC-495cw) will not recognize Outlook as a default email progam and so I cannot scan directly into an email.

How can I install Outlook onto my computers so it may be recognized by my printer/scanner?

    Thanks,

  13. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your advice. I am rapidly moving away from Windows to Linux, but my wife has a laptop with 8.1 and a desktop with 7. I've read and heard so much about CCleaner that before I screwed something up, I wanted to be certain that I needed to install it to those computers.

    Thanks for the advice.

  14. I have set up my new Outlook.com e-mail account, but I changed my mind about

the letters I want to use. Is there any way to go into the account and change the

e-mail address by deleting a couple of letters while maintaining the account?

Thanks for any help you can offer?

These forums have been invaluable as we transfer data from old xp's to

8.1 and 7 software. Thank you.

  15. Advice, please.

My HP laptop came with Windows 8 installed which I upgraded to 8.1. It also came with Norton Antivirus and that program has expired and been removed. It also came with Microsoft Defender. When I tried to install Microsoft Security Essentials, I received a notification that I did not need to install Microsoft Security Essentials since Microsoft Defender provided the same protection.

MY QUESTION: Do I need to install an antiviral program since I have Windows Defender? If so, which is the preferred one.

    Thanks,
