  1. Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro is the nicest I've seen to date. I've used Kerio, Tiny, AtGuard, NIS and ZoneAlarm. I started using Outpost after reading great reviews for it and it was one of the few to pass a lot of leak tests the others failed.
  2. Enable Automatic Updates from Services. For some reason the service must not be disabled to do an update (it didn't matter before).
  3. That's a check for a server that's been compromised by Code Red.
  4. Doug Knox has a nice little program to remove the hotfix backup files and avoids the error with Windows Update telling you they aren't installed. link
  5. %AppData% - common Application Data directory ex. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data %UserProfile% - location of current logged on user's profile ex. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator %AllUsersProfile% - location of "All Users" profile ex. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users %DefaultUserProfile% - location of "Default User" profile ex. C:\Documents and Settings\Default User %ProgramFiles% - default directory to install programs to ex. C:\Program Files %SystemRoot% - Windows directory ex. C:\Windows %SystemDrive% - drive system boots from ex. C: %Temp% - Temporary files directory ex. C:\Temp %Tmp% - Temporary Internet files ex. C:\Temp %UserAppData% - user specific Application Data directory ex. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data Most of the directories are defined for each user in: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders] and for everyone in: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]
  6. Request for next version: 1. Online update check. 2. Support for editing the REG_EXPAND_SZ keys under these branches: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders] - "Common" stuff [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders] - Default User profile directory names [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion] - environmental variables defined here [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList] - environmental variables defined here I'd think about the possibility of setting up a more Unix-like layout for programs and system files. It might be itneresting trying to configure a Windows XP install to look as similar directory wise to a Linux box, with "home" and "system" instead of "Program Files" and "Windows" directories. 3. More variables: %AppData% %UserProfile% %AllUsersProfile% %DefaultUserProfile% %ProgramFiles% %SystemRoot% %SystemDrive% %Temp% %Tmp% 4. Instead of importing registry files, what about editing the HIVE*.INF files directly? 5. Close/Minimize/Maximize buttons.
  7. If you want any ideas for expanding this program: Full Featured Windows XP Under 100MB It would be cool to have a program to build/edit the various .INF files for slimming down your XP install CD.
  8. Moisture from your breath (if you didn't use compressed air) will cause more damage to the connectors inside the NES. I used to repair NES systems when I was in high school and corrosion from condensation was the cause of failure for most of the systems. Not that you're likely to be concerned enough to fix it (with emulators being readily available) but if you do obtain the tool to open the NES you can clean the contacts with fine sand paper (or a ladies emory board) and some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. If you can't open it, lightly moisten a strong paper towel (Bounty) with rubbing alcohol and push it into the cartridge slot with a thin metallic tool (like a spatula).
  9. And Grateful Dead fans around the world smile...
  10. I use Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. As far as I can tell I have the latest version, 8.1.0.821 which was released in April. New virus definitions are posted almost daily on this page.
  11. I had that problem with 4.0 beta 3 I think. Was fixed afterwards, and wasn't a problem in 4.0 beta 5. I did experienced unexplained crashes with fwdrv.sys and 4.0 betas, so I've gone back to 3.0 beta 6.
  12. I used DOSBox for Ultimate DOOM under Windows XP. I've also used VDMSound in the past to play WarCraft 2 with sound under Windows 2000 (also works in XP). And if this is ok: Transport Tycoon Deluxe on Home of the Underdogs. (Windows version, works under XP with TTDPATCH).
  13. If you haven't heard of WASTE from Nullsoft, it's a nice app that was released a few days ago. P2P chat, IM, and file transfers via encrypted private networks. Anyway, I'm on the network and welcoming anyone who wants to join. I'll suggest the link below for further reading and information: http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread...&postid=4319233 Users of other P2P apps like DC might find it has some nice features over other programs. It was released with source and will probably be spawning several forks shortly. Versions for Windows and FreeBSD with more ports on the way, and Linux already in progress.
  14. Since I'm running Corporate I'm interested to see if their method works for it.
