  1. @Wunderbar98, Sorry I'm very late with this comment, but as to the thread renaming, perhaps renaming the thread something like "Running Windows 98 in 2020 and beyond, without anything not officially released by MS specifically intended for Win98" would satisfy your requirement to distinguish this thread from others, yet remove the "offending" term "Vanilla". As thread creator, I assume you can do this.

    I hope you are well, my friend.

    Very true, and I should have noted that membership is required to view the content originally, and have done so now.

    I don't want to minimize @wkeller's work in any way (he is also a member here) so I won't copy the post here, but I will give you a teaser by listing all of the various browsers mentioned in that post. You'll need to either look them up yourself or sign up and go to the post I linked to above for the links (xxxxxxx) to the download locations. As far as being actively updated, he has already added the SRWare Iron links I sent him and posted here earlier. So here are all of the Windows 7 compatible browsers I am aware of, thanks to @wkeller

  3. For the most up-to-date list I have found of Windows 7 compatible browsers, look here.[1] Even though the post is in the middle of a thread, it is actively maintained and regularly updated with current information. It lists over a dozen different chrome variants and a half dozen Firefox variants, along with info on how to slim and harden Firefox variants in general and some registry entries to suppress unsupported OS warnings in Chrome.

    In addition to the ones listed above, yet another Windows 7 compatible Chrome variant that I have used for a number of years is SRWare Iron. There are installer and portable versions available for both x32 and x64.

    Cheers and Regards

  4. For the last Windows 7 compatible version of Brave, go here - https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v1.47.186 - (that is the official release site, so you know you're not getting anything hinky), scroll down and download >>brave-v1.47.186-win32-x64.zip<<  Expand that where you want it and create a shortcut to "brave.exe" which will launch Brave v1.47.186 x64.

    If you're able to run the latest version of Brave, simply download either BraveBrowserSetup.exe or BraveBrowserSetup32.exe from the same page and run them, which will fetch and install the latest available version from their official servers.

    Suggestion: Upon installing a new Windows build, SaB triggers a notification telling us that there is no new version (of SaB). It would probably be better to only trigger that if there is. since otherwise it's a notification of nothing, which isn't normal.

    Yes and no. On the one hand I understand your point that the notification of nothing is not "usually" normal. But on the other, what it is doing is the same as if you had manually asked it to check for updates. If you did that and you didn't get a response if there were no new updates, then you would be right to complain that it should at least confirm that you are running the latest release, correct? So it seems to me that having this harmless confirmation that there is no new version when you install a new Windows build is a much better situation than getting no response when you check for updates manually when there is no new version, which, for most people, will be a much more frequent occurrence. Yes, I suppose logic code could probably be added to check to see if this update request was occurring for the first time for this build and was not manually triggered, but it doesn't really seem that important. Just my opinion.

  6. Oh WOW! I am so sorry to hear that. I wondered why we haven't seen that many posts from him in quite a while.

    Den was also very kind and helpful to me. He and Trip have been the two mods that I have personally interacted with the most over the years..

    Thank you very much for sharing this sad news, Dave. May he rest in peace.

    EDIT: Looking back over my old records I was reminded that Den and I joined MSFN within a few weeks of each other, which means nothing, really, but was just something we had in common.

    Sorry to hear you got the virus, hopefully it won't be a severe case, ..., with one exception that while not needing to be hospitalized, had the pains/fever (and a terrible cough) last 6 days or more.

    Yep, your last example sounds like my situation. (I had the shots + booster, plus flu vaccine, etc  Fortunately my wife has avoided getting it, so far.)   I started the first mild symptoms 12/27, got worse and had my test 12/29, I continued to get worse with a peak around 12/31-1/1. My main complaints are congestion, cough, severe body ache, mild fever. ::sigh::  I'll live.  :)

    ????????????????????

    I don't know what your question means.

    Isn't Home Single Language just Home with no language packs?

    And I was going to provide a link showing how to install, or remove, language packs for Windows 10. Then I thought about it and seemed to remember that Home didn't allow language packs to be installed? And I thought I read somewhere that in order to install language packs that you had to upgrade Home to Pro first? This - https://www.groovypost.com/howto/install-change-languages-windows-10/ - almost says that, but it makes a distinction between Home and Home Single Language.

    Quote

    First, you need to ensure you have a supported edition of Windows 10, such as Home, Pro or Enterprise. If you’re running Windows 10 Home Single Language, you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro version to add languages. The Single Language version usually comes preinstalled on new computers.

    Then I ran across the link I referenced above - https://windowsreport.com/download-install-windows-10-home-single-language/ - and figured that maybe I was wrong? Why would they reference a Single Language version if that was the only way that Home comes? As to its "advantages":

    Quote

    Windows 10 (Single Language) is essentially part of the Windows 10 Home package and often comes preinstalled in most Windows 10 laptops.

    It has a couple of differences from the conventional Home Edition — chief among them the fact that the operating system provides only one system language option.

    This is its single biggest advantage as your windows will not be unnecessarily cluttered with multiple language packs that you may rarely use.

    I'd be interested to hear from the OP what indeed were his motivations for wanting the "Single Language" version.

    As to what any of this means to the conversion instructions, I have no idea and frankly don't care, because:

    1) I have  no interest in any Home version of any MS OS
    2) I have no interest in any version of Windows 10

    Cheers and Regards

    NOTE: Please excuse my current attitude. My son came down with COVID last week (mostly asymptomatic and he's doing fine and recovering well) and I just found out an hour ago that I have COVID as well - not so asymptomatic :( - so I really feel like crap. Oh well, it will get better.

  9. OK, after looking, I've seen that there is a difference between Home Single Language and "regular" Home. I guess the extra simplicity appeals to you?

    I haven't found any tutorial on how to convert Pro to HSL, but here is an article that explains where you can get a copy to download and install.  https://windowsreport.com/download-install-windows-10-home-single-language/  You "might" be able to install and have your existing data survive, but to be on the safe side I would suggest copying your user data someplace safe and copying it back after it is installed.

    Good luck!

    Cheers and Regards

  10. ESENT has been around since Windows 2000 through Windows 11. Maybe this will help explain ESENT, and convince you that it is both not "junk" and also useful.

    From https://www.minitool.com/news/esent.html:

    What Is ESENT?
    ---------------
    What is ESENT? ESENT is an embeddable transactional database engine. It was first provided with Microsoft Windows 2000 and has been available to developers since then. You can use ESENT for applications that require reliable, high-performance, and low-overhead structured or semi-structured data storage.

    The ESENT engine can meet a variety of data requirements, from simple data like hash tables to data that cannot be stored in memory to more complex data (such as applications with tables, columns, and indexes).

    Now, many teams at Microsoft currently rely on ESENT for data storage, such as Active Directory, Windows Desktop Search, Windows Mail, Live Mesh, and Windows Update. Besides, Microsoft Exchange uses a slightly modified version of the ESENT code to store all its mailbox data.

    Hi, why you have 2 (two!) explorer.exe? It's virus, one of these two?..

    I scanned my computer with 4 programs (Malwarebytes Antimaware / Malwarebytes Ant Root-Kit / Adwcleaner /McAfee Stinger 32) with that 2nd instance of explorer going and they didn't pick up anything at all so I restarted and now only 1 explorer; so I don't have a clue?

    Could be Folder Options->View->Launch folder windows in a separate process.

    Hi..

    No, wasn't that. the only options I have ticked in ... Folder Options->View:

    Display the full path in the address bar
    Do not caches thumbnails
    Do not show hidden files and folders
    Hide extensions for known file types
    Hide protected operating system files

    That is it.

    Maybe it was a glitch, because it hasn't happened again :)

    I was going to agree with @UCyborg  I'm not sure how XP does it, but for my Win 7 system, I'll have one instance of explorer.exe for the desktop, then another for each instance of Windows Explorer I open. But since it hasn't happened again, then maybe it was just a glitch, so never mind. :)

  12. I don't know if you've seen this little app before, but if it's functionality is not already in System_Info somewhere, it might be worthwhile either including it, or it's functionality in a later release. The app hasn't been updated in three years, so might be considered quasi-abandoned? It's also just an HTA, so it's straightforward to update or modify if needed.

    The app is atmzzrSystemCheck - http://automizzer.webatu.com/atmzzrsystemcheck-en.html - It's function is to check the version of the various runtimes on your system, and provide links to the latest official versions available to download, if you are not up to date.

    With this program you can list versions of important components and runtimes installed on your system.
    You can also save it as a report in a text file on your desktop.

    Notes:

    - This program is compatible with all Windows versions from 5.1 to 6.4 and 10 [XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, 7, 2012, 8, 8.1, 10] x86|x64;
    • WinXPx64 | Win2003x64 users may need to install KB960037-XP | KB978334-2003 hotfix for this program to work correctly;
    - It's only one .exe - no installation, no changes to user system;
    - Available command-line switches:
      /offline - runs the program in offline mode (without updates).
      /log - save only .txt file without the main screen and updates.
        /? - show help.

    Tips:

    - If you hover the system field (the identified one on the right) you'll see a hint with original product name and version number - useful for users with modified OSes;
    - When you hover the DirectX version field you may see a hint if DirectX 9.0c is also installed - on newer OSes;
    - In case of getting 'mismatch' status for Flash Plugin, Java or VC++ hover the field for details;
    - Colored 'LEDs' determine the state of plugins and allow to download them if necessary, if the plugin is up-to-date double-click on the green diode opens the latest link;
    - You can use keyboard shortcuts for: help [F1], .txt file save [CTRL+S] and close [ESC];
    - You can change background and text colors also the background image with an .ini file (continue reading for details).

    Since I don't think that not having the newest drivers would be much of an issue ... I think nvidia was the last one to still drop new drivers,,,

    I agree with this part of your statement, but the problem you will probably run into is the newest games will refuse to run on Win 7, whether they truly need the latest driver which doesn't install, or if the game company can't or won't support Win 7 any more. Older games, using older drivers, should still be able to run on Win 7 just fine. Not being a gamer, neither of these cases bother me, and I fully expect to be able to run Win 7 for many more years of "normal" usage.

    As to the purpose of this thread, it will be useful to others if you note which versions of which games or apps are the last ones to run on Win 7. If possible, try to determine if it is the installer which, possibly artificially, will no longer function on Win 7, or if it is the game or app itself.

  15. @wimb, would you please point me to a link where it explains in detail what exactly that Win_Reduce_Trusted does? In an early post you state that it is "suitable to Reduce Windows 7/8/10 x64", and I'm interested it in using it for install applications other than VHD installations, primarily for Windows 7 and 8. If it wouldn't be directly applicable for such use, I could at least use it as an example to model from. TIA.
