I'd totally agree with Jeremy. A fresh install is always much better imho. Another thing you might want to consider is if your installed apps on 98 are gonna be compatible with your new xp install. It has been some time since I used 98 and my memory is slowly fading, but seems like several apps had compatibility problems on xp and you will want to check into that as well. I'm having the same problem as well. I have looked for an answer myself, but have found nothing so far. I agree, it is a pain to constantly have to reset my folder view.

It's my understanding that the RTM is released with fewer drivers to the manufacturer's and they add they own drivers for their systems and software offerings. The retail version is released with many more drivers included to cover a wide range of systems and configurations.

Use Admin account only, never a problem.

I received my copy from Microsoft several days ago. Installed it and have been tweaking since. I'm definately starting to like it much more than I previously did, seems to be pretty quick and smooth for me.
