gMail login page quirk IE.11 vs FF/Chromium - Help? 　 　 　 In the Left screencap is the gMail login page in IE.11, and it's what I prefer since I use AHK sequence to quick fill it in and go -- filling in both name & password w/ one click-sequence. 　 The screencap on the Right shows the gMail login page on both FF & Chromium 39, both portables -- it "suddenly" changed to this about 2 weeks ago -- where an extra click [ "Next" ] is required to be able to enter a password. 　 Can anyone help me change this back to how it was -- and how it still is in IE 11 ? 　 ** and 1 more question -- I come here for help because over the years it seems that this forum's members are the most knowledgable about nearly everything. 　 So, I'd like to ask members for suggestions as to what forum(s) other than here to visit concerning questions about Networking, as I'm beginning to study for CompTIA and eventually CISCO certifications. And, would I likely get that kind of help here in this forum -- as a newbie in Networking study, basic questions, etc? 　 Thanks very much for your time and responses - appreciated.

yes Thank You - nothing heavy duty planned for the VMs, just new app testing before adoption to the daily baseline image, with the ability to compare their behaviour side by side to the daily image. by the way - the ease of creation & multiple options of manipulation make this file-based approach to visualization seem very compelling - I think I can understand why (Microsoft-based-dependent) I.T. is evolving in this direction.

I've created several native boot vhds from w7sp1 Ultimate, and I'm storing/running them in a non-boot -- non-system partition (how's that - does it cover everyone's conflicting definitions?), but on the same physical SSD as the boot--system partition. Now I want to use these VHDs ALSO in VMs. The advice over several years seems to have been to locate VMs on a physically different hdd than the boot/system partitiion, but with SSDs - does it matter anymore since we don't have the same physical platters spinning/seeking? My laptops have intel i5 & i7 cpus, usb 3 ports w/ drivers installed, ssds for the main internal OS drives, and SATA III for accessory drives inside the laptops. I use TeraCopy as default file copy app. When I plugin an external SATA hdd that's inside a usb 3 enclosure, into a usb 3 port and copy files to/from the interal drives, TeraCopy does give an estimated transfer speed in the title bar - which varies from 20-something to 90-something MB/s. I'm aware that file/folder types affect the transfer speeds, but my overall question is -- how can I determine for sure that transfer is occurring by means of the usb 3 standard? is there some app or Sysinternals utility that would indicate this? Or, is it a default logical inference that if the speed is showing to exceed "xxxx" MB/s, then that speed is automatically exceeding the usb 2 spec, and therefore means that usb 3 is functional ?? Hope my question is clear, if not I'll try again - thx for any helps.

Thanks cdob - - now that I've finally got all my w7's configured, why not go through the rinse-repeat cycle again quickly w/ w8? Well, some have said ... just use Classic Start Menu, etc (which I love on w7) if you're not a finger-swiper, and keep putting one foot in front of the other .... MS may've gone metro, but they're not going retro ~

Can a new Wintel machine utilize-see-read USB 3.0 before specific drivers installed? Since I need to install USB 3.0 drivers on my Asus i7 machines (G73 & K55A), does that mean it can't natively utilize-see-read USB 3.0 before any specific drivers are installed for those USB 3.0 ports? If it CAN, then I'd want to use a new USB 3.0 flash drive to install from - - for the additional speed gains, but if it canNOT, then I'd just continue to use the standard USB 2.0 stick. Thanks for whoever can help clarify this.

Title explains my question - wondering if I can remove "Speech Support" using Win Toolkit or similar, but still leave the ability to successfully install & run things like Dragon Dictate or various text-to-speech tools (though I realize these are opposite apps - I guess I don't fully understand what "Speech Support" is about? ...or, does it only apply to Microsoft apps? "Open With" list order - any way to change the order? IF! things happen by logic in digital-land, surely someone by now has discovered a way to change the order of programs in the "Open With" list / menu ?? I've tried renaming the intended targets in the Registry (a, b, c, d, etc), along with changing their order in the MRU registry entry for the same file extension - but no luck yet. I understand how to delete &/or add programs using several of the Registry keys - since it's a bit different for files than folders. This isn't a do-or-die situation, just one more little instance of hoping to master my own work-a-day digital environment ~ Anyone can help? Thanks very much ! I've only read about Sysprep, never implemented it - seemed just a bit beyond my mental reach, tried to work around it with careful nLite-ing & multiple imaging as described above, so here we go to yet learn that tool "that which we resist persists until we desist; joyously embracing all, even the densest barricades fall" tho' before I go thrashing off into the weeds - would you kindly clarify the relationship/need of "Offline Sysprep" to regular Sysprep? as, why is it necessary? - I really appreciate a global view before burrowing into the details. ..... and Thanks again to <j> who has assisted me many times under other names in other places ~ *** edit *** ok, I have been studying Sysprep @ Vernalex's site, and it occurs to me that the reason I need "Offline Sysprep" is exactly because I want to "slipstream" some drivers that an "online" running system will not accept - eh? & I'll need to apply my image to its own partition as a "workshop" or working space - I typically use an empty external laptop hard drive just for this purpose, partitioning it to the desired size & format with gParted, setting flag=boot, etc. .... am I starting to get the big picture? .... for better or worse, it seems that my brain needs to understand overall relationships of the process before it agrees to comprehend the details ...

Well, I've learned alot & been able to solve alot of challenges from studying this Drivers section of the forum, but I've got a situation I can't figure out : We want to commission (another) older laptop into service in our business, and I'd like to image it with the same image we used previously, & successfully, for the other laptops. From a fully configured volume licensed machine, I've prepared several "Generic" images to accomodate different hardwares : First, under Device Manager > Computer, I set up a different image each for : ** ACPI Multiprocessor ** ACPI Uniprocessor ** Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC ** Standard PC Next, under Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, I changed to: ** Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller for each of the 4 scenarios above. These combinations have successfully installed on a variety of different machines with their different hardwares - I install the image, then install the specific drivers on each target, then make a new image of the target that is now fully configed w/ apps + drivers, and then we're all set. But none of these have worked on a Gateway 7405gx with a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3200+ cpu, and more importantly - a VIA K8T800 (VT8383) chipset - the problem lies in the storage controller for the hard drive - it's listed as a VIA 0571 device ID, and that leads to a VIA_HyperionPro_V509A driver download. After imaging the Gateway target, the machine begins to boot, but then goes into a perpetual loop - I believe because there is no recognition of the hard drive from the "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" , since it's very specific that it needs the VIA drivers for the VIA chipset. My problem, I think, is that I can't load the VIA driver in the source machine to prepare an image, since the source doesn't have that chipset and so it won't load the driver. How can I make these 2 things work together? - a fully prepped image from my source machine so I don't have to spend the time configing the target, and a hard drive controller that will allow the target to boot? or, will this just plain not work, & I have to bite the bullet and spend that time configing? Pagefile placement w/ 16 gb RAM & SSD or hybrid drives? Here's the scenario - * ASUS G73JW laptop w/ 16 gb DDR 1333 3 channel RAM * 3 hard drives : 1st & 2nd = both Seagate XT NCQ Hybrid 500 gb @ 7200 @ 32 MB cache ( eventually - the Primary drive will be an SSD) * triple booting Win.7, XP, Linux (though XP will probably be run mostly in a VM on Win.7) * usage - moderate video editing, VM study - not much gaming, I'm just fortunate to subcontract for a grateful company that is rewarding my services with this hardware indulgence * habits/experience: this will be my 1st full adoption of Win.7 - so far I've only toyed with it to see which apps work, learning the interface, & experimenting w/ RT 7lite + vLite to trim it down. however, I use a very efficiently configured/trimmed nLited XP - only essential Services, xplorer2 window mgmt, etc , and plan to run Win.7 in the same manner - light and lean. I've read some of Mark Russinovich's articles on Windows XP pagefiles - from my impression he indicates that XP is actually designed to use pagefiles, and that performance would drop somewhat if pagefiles are not used. what about Windows 7 ? I've also read recommendations in many places that optimization = placing a pagefile on a 2nd hard drive if one is available. ** 1st BIG QUESTION - with the given scenario - eliminate pagefile altogether with this setup? or if pagefile is still desirable/necessary - create a pure RAM drive & set the pagefile there? In the past I've read where that idea was bogus, but I assume that's because there was limited RAM to begin with, and the whole point of pagefiles is to spare RAM? But what happens if there's actually an over-abundance of RAM that exceeds all of the OS's, programs, & the user's needs? such that 2 - 4 GB could be allocated to a pagefile RAM disk? ** 2nd BIG QUESTION - with the Seagate hybrid drive, and then with the idea of eventually using a true SSD for the Primary drive, assuming that a pagefile is used, would it be just as optimum to set it on the primary drive, as opposed to a Secondary drive? - due to the nature of the SSD technology? Thanks for pointing me to that wiki, Yzowl - it's very helpful under the "Varying features" section, and reinforces some of your prefs. I've used nLite successfully for several years now, configuring very slim builds, but now I want to understand how it's done under the hood ..... and have been meaning to study some of the elders' posts for quite awhile now .... gosh, fdv, etc. .... trying to take it 1 step at a time, and the combination of building/installing an .iso from the hard drive into VirtualBox really saves the time! my current nLited XPsp3 config installs to usable VBox desktop in 8 minutes on a 2 GHz celeron 2 GB RAM machine, so now I'm working to understand & use some of the scripting methods to make it change other Registry values that aren't included by default in nLite.

In the MS documentation, such as Ref.chm, there are spaces around the = signs in some examples : ... yet when I go to study various winnt.sif files or unattend.txt files, the keys & values are "tight" - no spaces : yet in another post here where I was searching for some help, there is a mixing of the 2, where the last 2 entries have spaces, and the preceding 4 entries do not : So what the heck is it? It's the classic situation as a noob - when you get an error & things aren't working - you don't know if it's YOU, or incorrect instruction, or a glitch in the physical machine, or the network, or ....... ? at the very least - if only we could get the instructions clear !!! PS - could we even begin to mention the use of " quotes " around certain values in answer files ? when does/doesn't it matter ? Is there any "guerilla-rule-of-thumb" ? such that ....... "always do such-and-such, at least if you need it, it will work, and if you don't, at least it won't break anything" .... ?? Thanks for any insight to this .

As I begin to read through & study these, I'm impressed by just how much information is available, even though it does require to RTFM - Microsoft style ! and it seems that many, including myself, come to MSFN as hobbyists &/or "filesharers", probably not employed in I.T., and typically wanting everything to be handed on a silver platter, and getting p***ed if/when it isn't ! so, as I read, make notes, & dL the available video tutorial-presentations, then "suddenly" a whole LOT more begins to make sense, and I also appreciate even more, the creative efforts of so many of the people here who code various GUI apps to make the strict/traditional command line I.T. approach "clickable". still, if a hobbyist is willing to invest the time to "S"TFM ("Study" TFM), slowly but surely they'll begin to gain the same knowledge of the employed I.T. pro - it's available to anyone willing to pay the price of effort & persistence thru the frustration

thx for the update this very day, nerdistmonk! I did successfully use Rockers' app - it made a 1.81 GB iso, installed to VirtualBox 3.2 as 4.98 GB w/ a 1 GB pagefile, seems to run fine. I simply went gonzo-b*lls out eliminating stuff, really just to see IF it would work, and by golly, it did! now I'm gonna go back & take care, keep notes, compare what you did, & see what happens. like so many others here, especially those of us who've made nLite after successful nLite version of XP - ever-more tweaked & fine-tuned, not to mention smaller/faster ....... well, it's just dang hard to let loose of success, ya know? I didn't even muck around w/ Vista, so I've only given vLite an unsuccessful go 2 times here yesterday, but I agree w/ you that it's "time to move on along, now". peaceout ~ ` < edit > just wanna add that if you're comparing your efforts to the "very very very very very small" 7 install that's available out there in the wild, you probly ain't gonna make it that small unless you do exactly what "they" did - which is documented in the .txt fle accompanying that release. otherwise, do what you can & enjoy your efforts - at least you will have created a smaller install .... that leads to a smaller backup image .... that takes less space & time to restore ....... yaddayadda

How to use modifier/parameter to make separate url Bookmarks for the 2 MSFN styles ? Lately in my studies here, I'm switching back & forth between the 2 styles since each offers a different/useful functionality, so I'd really appreciate if anyone can show me how to make 2 different url MSFN bookmarks : one for the MSFN stylesheet, & one for the IP.Mobile stylesheet. I looked at View:Source whilst each style was being used, but I'm no html/css expert, so I was unable to find anything that seemed to make a difference, and the url listed in the address bar seems to be the same regardless of which style sheet is being used. I know there's got to be a way to add some modifier/parameter to the url. I'll save quite some minutes being able to bind those to hotkeys, versus going to the bottom of the page each time to switch. The Bayden IEToys http://www.bayden.com/ietoys/ has the component "Linkify" that does the same thing - select the text url, R-click & choose "Linkify", then the non-hyperlinked url will open in a new tab. There's other time/effort saving features in that app too. But I still wanna know where "Copy and Go" for Internet Explorer came from, or is available from !!

On a previous machine that I gave to a friend, I had a "Copy and Go" option in the Right-click context menu in Internet Explorer 7, for non-hyperlinked plain text urls. I don't know how it got there? but it was super-quick & useful. Just reloaded another machine from scratch, & now I don't have it there. Anybody have any idea how/where to get it? I know it's a standard plug-in for Firefox/Mozilla - will that plug-in work at all on IE7 w/o corrupting it ? I also run Quero Toolbar & IE7 Pro in IE7 (also use 'Fox, Opera, & Chrome for various things - but I want this functionality for IE7) There are some AutoHotKey scripts that convert plain text to urls, but since they're dependent on a L- or R- mouse click-hold, they often conflict with other AHK & StrokeIt functions I already use. Any suggestions for other progs or scripts, Reg tweaks, etc. that can do this would be appreciated !
