  1. Fair enough, but I never got permanent 100% CPU usage indications anywhere until the thumbnail viewer was installed. Neither do I. BTW, my patched SYSMON may interest you, although it'll not solve your issue. Note that the Win ME version works OK on 98SE, and that's the one I'm presently using.
  2. There is no need for direct core patching, because some core files are actually substituted on installation, shlwapi.dll and shfolder.dll being just two examples of it. To know (a lot) more about the IE files and integration, please visit the venerable Geoff Chappell's new site: link
  3. Thanks, herbalist, for the swift reply and precise pointer. It is a quite intersting exchange of ideas you and Multibooter had there, and lends itself for much reflexion. BTW, the SSM page is no more, but here is a working link for people to get ssm-2.0.8.583-free. It does rock! ...and so do you!
  4. [somewhat offtopic] No! Today's sorry contrafaction of the beetle cannot be even remotely thought of as a true Volkswagen beetle! It may be faster. But it's as false as a US$3 bill. The last true Volkswagen beetle was produced in Mexico, in 2003. [/somewhat offtopic]
  5. Well 9/11 is a dark date, and I think we'll mourn those dead in that day forever. That said, I fail to see the cause-effect relation between 9/11 and software. Maybe I'm being too naive. Could you please elaborate?
  6. Dave, you might use Windows own SYSMON.EXE to break the tie and decide which app is wrong... my own bet goes to the Cool Beans, as sysinternals utilities are pretty reliable.
  7. The link provided by Whatever420 is to FileHippo software archive. There you'll also find v. 9.12, together with various other previous (and latter, but those are irrelevant) versions of Autoruns.
  8. Rubber Ducky???!!! Sorry, Jake, no offense meant... but it *is* the funniest ideia materialized in a program that I've seen in a long time!
  9. I've installed the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats (FileFormatConverters.exe), then compatibilitypacksp1-kb940289-fullfile-en-us.exe and then compatibilitypacksp2-kb953331-fullfile-en-us.exe and my fully up-to-date Office97 now can deal with Word 2007 .docx files and Excel .xlsx files! I haven't tested for PowerPoint files yet, but shall update this post about it whenever I do. And I have just converted a small Word 2007 .docx document to Word 2.x format, just for fun... @AndrewNi: Thanks again! You rock! Later edit: PowerPoint files (.pptx) also converted OK!
  10. OK, let's go! 0) Do you have a previous known-good back-up to fall back to? 1) Which Flash version do you have? 2) Since when did your machine start behaving strangely?
  11. Indigo Rose offers a 30-day trial version of Setup Factory... I guess it may unpack the installer, don't you all agree?
  12. You can request latest 98 official GDI from here:http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotf...px?kbnum=289635 That hotfix installs GDI32.DLL and GDI.EXE v 4.10.2225 and is indicated for all localized versions. However, for users of English Win 98SE only there is the unofficial v. 4.10.2227, which can be downloaded here: Q918547 and for English Win ME there is v. 4.90.3003 here: ME918547, as Drugwash pointed out some posts above:
  13. I beleive there isn't a driver for Audigy2 zs with Win 98SE. Have you found one perhaps?
  14. Tihiy, you rock! Thanks a lot for RP 9.1.0 RTM! Now, since you actually asked for bug reports... I can live with it, but, I regret to have to say it, the Tray still flickers (issue reported here by me and by Whatever420, at the time of RP 9.0.4). I'm using an as barebones as possible configuration (just Uberhack.exe, RP8.dll and SHL8.dll). Under [Effects], I have just "Use Windows Animations", "Show Windows Contents while Dragging" and "Smooth Edges of Screen Fonts" ticked, and under [Misc] only the "Replace System Font with Tahoma" is ticked. And KTM8.DLL was renamed to KTM8.RP9, in order to disable it. And yes, my video card is a nVidia GeForce2 MX400. I do think this issue is related to this video card. BTW, I repeat my earlier, still unanswered, question: KTM8 reports USER, GDI and SYS resources. However, AFAIK, the free SYSTEM resources ought to be equal to the lesser value between USER and GDI. Since what I see (I see SYS > either USER or GDI) makes no sense with the above definition, what does SYS in ktm8 represent?
  15. I've found some more info over in the videohelp forum (link), the last post of it, by spectroelectro is quite worth reading. I've sure learnt a lot about this matter today. Advanced User and jaclaz, you both rock!
  16. Rivers Of Babylon - Boney M. Run - Lighthouse Family Because the Night - Patty Smith @Tripredacus: sorry to disagree but "du hast" means "you have", while "du haßt" means "you hate", although both sound exactly the same ...
  17. Is there any way to install the MS Office 2007 Compatibility Pack to Office 97 under Win XP? I mean even if editing the installer with Orca or some other usual trick is needed, did anyone even try?
  18. LAST - FREE - XXCOPY FREEWARE v.2.96.5 - http://www.xxcopy.com/download/xxfw2965.zip Later versions (v. 2.97.0 and higher) do not work with Win 98SE. At installation, you get this message: "current copy of the executable was launched from <blank>". "recommend that xxcopy be stored in following directory: \". If you proceed, it claims to install and running it from a DOS box, "xxcopy /?" works. But, if you try "xxcopy f:\whatnot c:\whatever\whatnot" or any other copy command, it just gives the error message "invalid source directory". Now, v. 2.97.0 is the first to support UNICODE filenames. AFAIK, support to UNICODE filenames results in incompatibility with Win 9x/ME. This also happened to WinHex when UNICODE filename support was added...
  19. Yes, there are. And RasPPPoE rocks! More info and downloads: http://www.raspppoe.com/
  20. Read posts #44-47 in this selfsame thread.
  21. I guess your Win 98 ended up installed to drive D:, hence it expects to be on D:. When you restart the machine just with the SD card, it becomes C: and Win 98 finds it's all wrong and doesn't load. If I were you I'd reformat the SD card and make it bootable. Then I'd boot from it, so that it becomes C: and install Win 98 to it from the USB flash drive, as you did before, all over again. This time Win 98 would end up installed to C:, so it should work all right, even without the USB flash drive present. YMMV, though. Good luck! And do keep us posted on yuor results.
