  1. Thanks for the additional info folks. I've had all those sites to my trusted list, but still no info bar on the update page, so I can't install ActiveX control.

By the way, I read sysdll's thread about a windows update problem, in which they said the system thinks they have Vista and not XP.........

'So here's the solution in case anyone else has this problem.

The problem seems to be that Windows Update thinks I have Vista when I have XP. I found a page at the Microsoft Developer Network for changing user-agent strings in the registry. I changed NT6.0 to NT5.1 and Windows Update is working correctly'

Could the above apply to me? I don't want to mess with the reg, but if it is a possible solution could someone provide detailed instructions how to achieve it.

    Thanks again

    please read this..........

  2. My sisters computer which was only freshly installed last week with a integrated SP3 cd now cannot run windows updates. She said she only last ran it a day ago and evidently this is true as I see IE7 is on there now not IE6. When I ran windows update there was an error code and when I googled the code I was told it meant BITS and auto updates services not running. BITS is running and auto updates set to disabled even tho in control panel updates are set to automatic. Now for something even stranger.

If I set auto updates to either manual or auto and then start the service it fails with error 1058. So another google tells me one of 2 scenarios.

    PLEASE READ THIS........

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

    regsvr32 wuapi.dll

    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

    regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    regsvr32 wups.dll

    regsvr32 wups2.dll

    regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Attempt to run Windows Update

Also try the Windows Installer link for Non-Vista machines from Microsoft.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346

1 - Service not enabled for hardware profile - checked this and it is enabled in the only hardware profile.

    2 - possible virus.

I googled the virus and did manual checks for tell tale signs of that particular virus and they were not there, plus there is up to date firewall and anti virus on the machine. Right now I am leaning towards a virus diagnosis tho as there is some other things I noticed. I tried to start a spybot sd scan to check for spyware as a cause, but the scan refuses to start saying I need to run a update, when I run a update it says no updates available is already up to date, again something I never witnessed before. Plus computer is more sluggish since I last seen it.

  3. Just one beep?

    please read this...........

    1) Ensure everything is firmly connected

    2) Try a different outlet in the house

    3) Try clearing the CMOS (remove battery from mainboard + unplug power from wall, wait for a few minutes, reconnect)

    4) Try a minimal boot using just the following components: :thumbup :thumbup

    -Mainboard

    -Power Supply

    -CPU

    -A Single memory module

If you get beeps from step 4, proceed to add a VGA adapter and keyboard, boot again

If that gives you some form of display, add a hard drive, boot again

If that gives you more of your system, add another remaining component, and so on, when you find the one that halts the boot process, you've likely found the damaged component

  4. I am having freqent lag, the longer I'm on the worse it gets. I defragmented my hard drives and it seemed to help a little. anyway, I installed all the Malware programs with nothing found and made the Highjackthis log file. hope someone can make sense of this.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

    Please READ THIS.......

    Important Warning

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility is provided "as is" to help resolve installation problems for programs that use Microsoft Windows Installer. If you use this utility, you may have to reinstall other programs. Caution is advised.

    On This Page

    SUMMARY

Microsoft has updated the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. With the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, you can remove a program's Windows Installer configuration information. You may want to remove the Windows Installer configuration information for your program if you experience installation (Setup) problems. For example, you may have to remove a program's Windows Installer configuration information if you have installation problems when you try to add (or remove) a component of your program that was not included when you first installed your program.

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not:

    • Remove Windows Installer.

    • Remove files of any programs that are installed by Windows Installer, such as Microsoft Office 2003.

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does:

    • Provide a dialog box where you can select one or more programs that were installed by Windows Installer. You select the programs on the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs.

    • Remove the files and registry settings that make up the Windows Installer configuration information for programs that you select.

If you use this utility to remove the Windows Installer configuration information for your program and you plan to reinstall the program, you should reinstall the program in the same folder where you originally installed it. This prevents duplication of files on your hard disk or disks.

  6. Hi All

I have a XP PC which is continuousally rebooting itself after POST.

I have tried Safe Mode, Last Known and Normal Mode and everytime the computer restarts automatically after POST but before the XP Logo appears.

I've tried different RAM (and different slot) and Video Card and taken it down to bare essentials of HDD, CD-ROM, RAM.

Is there another way to capture the BSOD error as it reboots to quick to read, or some third party software that I can boot off a CD to help me resolve the issue.

    Thanks

    Robbie

Ok so some of you have difficulties loading up Windows XP because it keeps on restartin. Well I got the Soloution.

    1. Turn on your PC and press F8 to load up The Start-up Options. Go to "Disable Automatic System Restart on Start-up" And press Enter.

    2. You may be asked to select an Operating System (OS). If you do Press Enter.

    3. You will get the Windows XP Loading Screen, but of course it will then go to the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Turn off your PC.

    4. Turn on your PC, and Press F8 to load up the Start-up Options Console. Go to "Last Known Good Configuration" and press Enter.

    5. You may be asked to select an OS. If you do then Press Enter on the Copy of Windows that isn't loading up.

    6. Windows Should Load Up Properly.

This Strategy Has worked on my Computer, and should work on all. I hope this helps for those people who can't boot up Windows.

  7. Hello guys, I'm having problem with my windows XP Pro. The problem is quite complex, i'm trying to explain as clearly as i can and hopefully ppl over here can help to resolve the problem

The situation is when i turn on my computer, it leads me into black screen where it ask me which configuration i want to choose (safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt and bla bla that kind of screen) i guess you guys should familiar with that screen. Anyway when i click either one of them, my system always keep restarting to that black screen again asking which configuration that i want to choose.

So i decided to reformat the hard drive so i put in my Win XP PRo CD and reboot using the CD it got me into the blue screen that ask me whether i want to install or repair or quit. IF i click install or repair it leads me into blue screen error saying that windows has found error on ntfs.sys and under Technical informations it says

    "STop: 0x00000050 (0xE11C1000, 0x00000000, 0xF74BEE89, 0x00000001)" .

    NTFS.sys - address F74BEE89 base at F7451000,datestamp 3B7dc5d0

My question is how do i fix this? and what start this restart loop?

hopefully you guys can understand what i'm trying to say hehehe

    thank you

Now guys, how can I remove Vista without crashing my XP?

    - can I just boot up in XP and delete the partition where I installed Vista?

Delete an OS entry on start up using boot.ini

    Posted 8/12/2002 by TweakXP Member

If you ever had two operating systems dual booting and wanted to delete the option on start up to choose which OS to start, simply do the following.

    1. First, open a command prompt. Click start, then run and enter cmd, then click ok.

    2. Rnter the following command to see the boot info "bootcfg /query"

(this will display your boot settings, what you will need is to take note of which boot entry ID you wish to delete.)

    3. Then type the following "bootcfg /delete /id 2

(In this case we have chosen to delete the second OS entry which we noted down earlier from the bootcfg query command.)

    4. Then once you restart you won't get the option to pick what OS you want to load.

The above is good if you uninstalled an OS but XP still queries you which OS to load.

    CAUSE

The error messages usually appear after failed installation of MSI Package or Disabled "Windows Installer" service.

    RESOLUTION

    Method 1

Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:

  10. try this

1.Perform an extensive memory test using memtest86+

2.Use last known Good configuration in booting in safe mode

3.Attempt registry roll back:The SYSTEM hive, which is located in %systemroot%\system32\config\SYSTEM, is responsible for the entire HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System tree. This is where hardware driver information is stored. If the Last Known Good option fails to solve the issue, it may be possible to revert to a previous SYSTEM hive by taking advantage of the System Volume Information folder. There are many other ways to cause this STOP error, including buggy drivers and damaged memory modules or other hardware.

    4.boot into safe mode

    5.5: CHKDSK /r

Boot your Windows installation media, begin setup, and press R at the first screen to enter Recovery Console. An alternate way to jump straight into Recovery Console is to tap F10 when you see the status message about pressing F6 for mass storage drivers. NOTE: if your mass storage controller is SATA, SCSI, or external EIDE, you may need to press F6 (depending on whether the controller is in INT13/legacy mode or not) to allow Windows Setup to load mass storage device drivers from a floppy diskette so that Recovery Console will be able to see your system drive.

Once you are logged into Recovery Console, type chkdsk /r and press Enter.

    goodluck :hello:

  11. Try a repair install of windows.

    try this......boot into Safe Mode.

Then click on Start/Run,type msconfig then press Ok.

Under the 'Startup' tab uncheck everything, press Apply/Ok,reboot at the prompt.

Does it now start up normally or not.

If the pc now starts up normally, start adding entries back under the 'Startup' tab.

Checkmark each box, reboot the pc in between each one until you find the problem.

If still no joy,try doing a Selective Startup,it may narrow it down as to what may be causing the problem.

Click on Start>Run,type msconfig then press Ok.

Under the 'General' tab,click\select 'Selective Startup',then clear all of the subsequent check boxes.

You will not be able to clear the 'Use Original BOOT.INI' check box.

Starting with the first available check box (Process SYSTEM.INI File).

Select each check box one at a time, and restart the machine as prompted until the problem is reproduced.

Once the problem reappears, click the tab that corresponds to the selected file.

For example,if the problem reappears after selecting the Win.ini file, click the WIN.INI tab in System Configuration Utility.

Make sure your AV and Firewall are both running before reconnecting to the internet.

Click on Start>Run,type msconfig then press Ok.

Under the 'General' tab,click\select 'Diagnostic Startup',then press Apply/Ok, reboot when prompted.

Does your pc start up normally now.

    Click on Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer.

Check in the System and Application logs for any serious errors[Red X's].

Double click on each error, the 'Event Properties' box will open.

Look through the info found there for any clues as to what may be causing your problem.

Specially look for any file/driver/ :hello::whistle:
