  1. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing any trouble with Broadcom's NetXtreme 57XX series of adapters. We have them in our Gateway E-2610D desktop PCs (integrated into the motherboard) and between now and when they were put into service (August 2007) we have replaced 17 motherboards to fix issues with these adapters. Essentially, the adapters would stop transmitting at gigabit speeds. If set to auto negotiate the connection speed, they simply wouldn't connect. If set to connect at a slower speed (10 or 100 megabit) they would connect fine. We've tried updating drivers and that didn't help, as well as reimaging them with a known good image. We know that the wiring is good (tested the wiring with known good machines) which really only leaves the network adapters themselves. Anybody else seen this?

  2. The owner of the PC (a student) said that it happened one morning when he powered up the machine. As far as I know, this is the same install of Vista that came from the factory (Dell). I'm also not sure about the software (reinstall, new install, uninstall), as all he would tell me was "I powered it on and nothing worked". He's got a few games on there (Halo and a few other regular market games), Office 2007, and AVG antivirus. Other than using the Dell provided backup utility, I don't think he's done anything to the PC. I've done some googling and haven't found anything yet.

  3. I've got a Vista Basic PC sitting next to me that gives the error "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." every time you try to open an executable. IE, firefox, command prompt, anything really, and I get the error above. According to the file association stuff in the control panel, everything is as it should be (save for what is supposed to manage the .exe files). Again, Vista basic PC with AVG free for the antivirus. Any thoughts?

  4. I work at a small university that provides 'free' printing to the students. We have provided them with a 24 hour lab and an old HP 5si (that thing is a tank). The problem we are experiencing is that students, at night when there is no one on duty in the lab  , are opening the printer and stealing the paper. We've been going through about four or more reams of paper per week. We know they are stealing it as we have gone through very little toner for the printer.

So we've decided that we need to some how physically lock the printer down so that someone can't open the trays and take out the paper without having a key or something (we can't change the hours of the lab or post additional workers). Anybody know of anything like this? It wouldn't have to be too elaborate, just something to keep the honest people honest (I imagine that anyone with some determination and a hacksaw/dremel could get past most any security measure). Thanks in advance!

  5. I'm trying to recover some data for a student who is running Windows Vista (laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1420). When I hooked the laptop drive up to my desktop (Gateway 2610 running Windows Vista Business) I can see the drive and the partitions (2 partitions) in Disk Management, but when I go to my computer I can't access the drives (says that they are empty and have a total size of 0). Any thoughts?

I've already tried to recover the data from the laptop by booting it normally, but it freezes soon after loading the profile (you get to see the desktop then it locks). Disabling all non-essential services doesn't help (safe mode is the only way it will boot and I can't think of a way to get my corsair flash drive to work in safe mode).

Any thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

  6. When I attempt to save any Office 2007 document to a network drive (hosted on a 2003 server) I get an error telling me that the file I'm trying to save is already in use and to try again later :realmad: . It doesn't matter if the file is saved in the 2007 format or the 97-2003 format. It also doesn't matter if the document is new and never been saved there before (meaning there is no chance of it already being in use). About theReinstalling office doesn't help, and I've checked permissions on the network share (those are correct). Any thoughts? My system is running XP (if that matters) and I've also tried it on a Vista machine with the same results. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Turns out it's our antivirus (BitDefender Client Professional Plus ver. 8) that is causing the problems. Now we need to fight tooth and nail with them *sigh*.

  7. Hi all, I'm trying to install Office 2007 on a machine running Windows Vista Business edition, and I keep getting "Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly component". Some googling has said to reinstall .Net 2.0 on the system, but I can't seem to find where I can do this on Vista. Downloading and attempting to install the Vista version of the .Net 2.0 software yielded nothing (says that I have a newer version) and the same is said of .Net 3.0. Any suggestions?
