Nice guide and I have a question regarding the Microsoft updates part. If I follow instructions that you provided in Part 1 then I don't need to follow Part 2 right? Part 2 covers the batch install?
Also regarding driver install. When you mean you want the .inf files, it's similar to Windows XP's unattended method where only the .inf files are used?
Is it normal for Vista to ask for network settings after it hit the desktop even though I set it in the answer file to "Home Network" settings?
Why did you set logon count to "2" and not more? What does the numerical value mean?
I set the "protect your PC" value to "3" and yet auto updates is still enabled. Why is this the case?

Is it just me or none of these registry tweaks work for IE7?
f u r using in unattended install, its not working coz ie7 must be executed atleast once. so after the runonceex execution, just open the ie7 windows thru Run registry entry and during next reboot, apply the tweak and remove the Run registry entry.
I'm not sure if I understand you. Are you saying that in a unattended install, it won't work?

The NET framework 2 that is included in The NET framework 3 install is the version as if you just downloaded NET 2 from microsoft and installed that. Both the NET 2 you download from microsoft and the NET 2 that is installed along with NET 3 need the NET framework 2 patches.
What about the other patches that I listed?

NET. framework 2 is included in the install of NET 3 however this version of NET 2 is not a patched version so patches for net 2 are required.
I'm not sure if I understand you. So you're saying that I do need to install those patches because .NET Framework 3 uses an older version of .NET Framework 2?

I think I installed all of the required updates as listed in the first thread for Windows XP Professional SP2 and yet when I go on Windows Update, the following list of updates still appear. Why? Another weird thing is that I installed .Net Framework 3 and there are updates for .Net Framework 2.

To my knowledge, you can't use paths in SVCPACK.INF. I have never experimented with that.There's no way to just go into svcpack.inf and rename the ones I put into hfsvcpack to have them in like a directory in the root of the disc?
That would actually be cleaner. Change the %HFSLIP% variable so it points to your custom directory and then move all files that are installed from %HFSLIP% by HFSLIP.CMD into that folder. But it's more manual work.EDIT: I found hfslip.cmd, could I just modify that to add a variable to point at the folder in the root, like the OEM folder that the driver pack'll be in?
I have never used those so I can't really say what's causing the failure. Here are some possibilities:I'm talking about the registry tweaks. Only the DPI and screensaver tweak did not work. Do you know why?1) You need a reboot for the changes to take effect
2) There's a mini post-install (titled "Windows Update") taking place when you first log on after Windows setup has completed. Some of the things you inject into the registry may be overwritten by that.
How do I ensure that doesn't happen? Restarting the computer will not do anything.

Removing "HFSLIPTotalSlipstream" didn't work or did other registry tweaks fail as well?
I'm talking about the registry tweaks. Only the DPI and screensaver tweak did not work. Do you know why?

HFGUIRUNONCE or HFSVCPACK. Doesn't matter...
I placed my registry tweak file in HFGUIRUNONCE and the settings doesn't appear to have applied. Maybe it's the way the entries are entered cause even if I include it with my main registry tweak file in HFSVCPACK, it still doesn't apply.

Yes I am. I use cmdlines.txt to initiate my registry tweak file. All other registry tweaks are activated, but the screensaver is not. I don't understand why.

Thanks to you and Kiki for the reply. Is it possible that you can add this as a feature into the next version to stop that entry from being added into the add/remove program?
Simply create a reg file and add this into it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HFSLIPTotalSlipstream]Run this reg file at T-13, at first boot or after, it's the same.

If you are referring to the HFSLIP entry... You could consider it a confirmation that HFSLIP was used to update your CD. If you used a recent version of HFSLIP, you can easily remove it by clicking the Change/Remove button.If what you say is true, then how come in th add/remove screen, there is a HF program installed? So HFSLIP does not resort to any hacking method to integrate/slipstream the hotfixes?

Tom, I know you said that it won't be practical for you to add SATA/RAID driver support, but is there any possibility that you can reconsider? Like add support for only the most popular models or at least the Intel SATA driver?

Using HFSLIP or updating windows once it is installed in the classic way has just the same effect. Except that if HFSLIP has been used, you can not uninstall the update as there is no 'previous' versions of the updated files.
In fact, we ensure that it has the same effect; it is meant to.
The difference is that HFSLIP saves up to 150MB on your installation CD, at least the same amount of space on your hard drive and speeds up installation.
And as far as I've understood, it is possible to update Vista just in the same way HFSLIP updates 2K/XP/2K3.

HFGUIRUNONCE supports .REG files. They are executed after the Welcome screen, but before the desktop, Themes, etc. are set up. If the .REG file needs to be executed AFTER that, you're out of luck. Remember that if you import registry settings through HFGUIRUNONCE that require a reboot, you'll have to reboot before they take effect.
It just occured to me that I forgot to document the HFGUIRUNONCE folder on the HFSLIP site once it became final... Will be fixed, hehe...
So I just drop my registry tweak file into HFGUIRUNONCE then and also have a registry file in HFSVCPACK?
Will you consider adding a feature of automatically integrating a reboot?
If in that way doesn't work you can add your reg tweak at "Startup" directory. Simply you must create a cmd file in HFSVCPACK that copy another cmd file to "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" and in this cmd file you write:
%SystemRoot%\REGEDIT.EXE /S "<position of your reg file>"
I use this technique for adding reg tweaks in later times. For examples at windows first run or at second reboot.
Ps. If you use this way, remember to delete the cmd file copied in %AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Whenever I open "My Computer", there is the "favourite links bar" to the left. How do I disable that via the registry?
