  1. Is there a syntax in the WinXP Pro registry in the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup] "DriverCachePath"="C:\\Windows\\System32\\Drivers" "SourcePath"="C:\\Windows\\System32\\Drivers" "Installation Sources" ... etc... Such that I can point the search to both the Windows System32 folder AND to Windows System32 Drivers I want to modify Driver Cache Path and Source Path and Installation Sources. C:\Windows\System32;C:\Windows\System32\Drivers does not work. I've modified my WinXP far beyond normal and I'd like to have a multiple path so that I don't have to manually point the search to the correct location. I hope my question is understandable. If the drivers and DLL files are already in Windows and I had not made some modifications the process would be automatic. I want to restore the automatic find and load and a multiple path would do that. If the question makes sense to anyone I would be delighted to read comments and advice. Respectfully, Slinkie
  2. Booogy... thank you for that link. It is "clean" and yes it is of some assistance.
  3. Is there a website which gives information about the purpose of WinXP DLL files ? In most cases websites wish me to download some sort of "free" file scanner/repair program or perhaps tell me only the information I could already obtain using <RIGHT CLICK/PROPERTIES> Also, some sites actually do give information that only a lawyer/programer might understand ! So, is there a decent website ? Or, is there a book that I could purchase that gives useable information ? I hope the members here understand my question, and thank you if you reply.

    Cannot find AUTOCHK

The file is AUTOCHK.EXE which is located in the \windows\system32 folder. Whatever else it does, it is responsible for that awful "Waaahhhh I got shut down improperly so I have to scan all my hard drives for the next several minutes" message on reboot. Forbid there should be an error in Windows Do this: by whatever means make a text file in the folder and name it AUTOCHK.TXT Place this text in the file, just so it won't be a zero length file: ; This is a fakefile ony the semicolon really must be there. Now save the file and rename it as AUTOCHK.EXE Now Windows should quit complaining and you'll never sit thru another drive scan. BTW I'm an amateur radio operator, too. If this reply is inappropriate for here place a query on www.*E*H*A*M*.net 73 tnx qso es cuagn di-dit
  5. This is probably not the correct place to ask but I'll start here and accept all negative comments and be thankful for any advice and apoligize for my violations. I don't know how to ask the question so I must explain. I have made a WinXP install CD and it works as I want it to. When I wish to reinstall my WinXP I would rather not use the install CD so I made an image of the hard drive. The image restores the hard drive and WinXP works just fine. When the computer has restarted I do nothing other than shut it down and I make another image of the hard disk. That image is sometimes smaller and sometimes larger than the original image. The difference in size varies from only a few bytes to more than 1KB. If I restore from that second image and again do nothing more than restart the computer and image again there will once more be a difference in size. I f I repreat the process many times each image will be slightly different in size, perhaps slightly larger or smaller each time. My WinXP is FAT32. I have no swap file. The images are made in DOS using GHOST or some other DOS or CD bootable imaging program. The results are the same even if I use some sort of LINUX bootable CDROM. Makes no difference. I have experimented and proven to myself that the change in size is due to a change in the registry, C:\Windows\System32\Config\*.* or to NTUSER.DAT Yet when I look at the the size of those files there is no difference between them. If I've somehow made myself clear then the question I suppose that I am asking is: "Why the change?" Yes, it is small but to my thinking it should not be different. Now just one more thing. If you know the program DeepFreeze (www.faronics.com) if I use FREEZE then there is no change no matter what i do. I hope I have explained this so someone can understand and the question is so "off the wall" that few people, if any, other than myself would care. But can any of you here comment or suggest or shed any light or contribute or even solve the mystery? Thank you and I wold be delighted with any of your comments. ###############
  6. The registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup appears to control where WinXP looks for DLL and SYS files for newly connected PnP devices via the sub keys DriverPath and Installation Sources and SourcePath. Before connecting the device I have manually placed the needed files in the directories: The INF file for the device in C:\Windows\INF The DLL file for the device in C:\Windows\System32 The SYS file for the device in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers I obtained the files by first installing the device on an unmodified WinXP computer and copying them to the computer in question. The PnP wizard detects the new device. The "Install The Software Automatically" option will find the SYS file but when the wizard looks for the DLL file I must manually use the "Copy Files From" option and point the search to C:\Windows\System32 if another SYS file is needed I must manually point the search to C:\Windows\ System32\Drivers If another DLL is needed I must manually point the search to C:\Windows\System32 My question is this: Is there some way to make the wizard look first in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and if not found there to continue to look in In C:\Windows\System32 In other words and more simply... multiple search paths without user intervention. Hope this makes sense. Lot of words for something simple Driver Cache, i386 and all the places where a normal WinXP system might look do not exist in my very modified WinXP Pro. I want to manually copy the INF and DLL and SYS files their places and have PnP find them automatically without user intervention in the Found New Hardware Wizard. Can better brains than I have help? Networking Ports

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, I ask here because of the great WinXP SP2 knowledge that is present. This is perhaps not the correct place but I don't know what to call my question. So after being angry perhaps someone will answer or direct my offending corpus delicti to someplace more appropriate. But first I must explain because I don't know a name to give it: When I use my web browser (it does not seem to matter which browser) to call up a website (does not seem to matter which website) then certain ports and IP addresses will be in use. I see this by using DTaskManager. When I am finished and I close the browser the web addresses corresponding to the website and also the ports remain open for about 1 minute. I would like for those to close sooner, perhaps in only a few seconds or even immediately. So, now this is the question: Is there a setting in the registry that I can change to make the ports and addresses or lingering connections release sooner after I close the browser? I apologize if I offend for being in the wrong place but I am lost. Many thanks and I will let you know if your help solves the question. Slinkie
  8. I'm not sure if ESENT97 and ESENT are the same thing, but there is no ESENT97 on my nlited and further manually stripped WINXP PRO. I removed ESENT and the only thing I noticed was that the modem/network icon in the System Tray disappeared. So at least ESENT is needed for lights.exe to work. Probably much more to it but that's a reply to your question. **

Thanks for the replies. I know my post might have not made much sense, maybe. But one gentleman did make a positive reply. You see, I think that I take this thing far too personally. I fight it like The Man Of La Mancha. I fight windmills. But I always think that there is an answer. To dream the impossible dream; to fight the unbeatable foe, etc. Windows does not have to be as screwed up as it is, but M$ made it that way. Yet I feel that if I persist enough that I will prevail. I've done well in my efforts but it is like the little dutch boy plugging the dam. We are up against the most 'dishonest' operating system ever conceived. Win ver ANYTHING is truly screwed up. LINUX is NOT an alternative. It is good for what it is good for but not for most of us. I did not mean to offend anyone, though I misspelled the author's name. I was intoxicated when I posted and have had a few drinks now, too. Please do not think badly of me. I'm only frustrated. By my lack of knowledge of how WIN really works. I do appreciate the comment about what NLITE is for and to 'have it your way'. That was a good explaination. Hope I didn't offend anyone as that was not my intent. I'm just frustrated and confused by my lack of knowledge. My Current WINXP SP2 has a hard drive footprint of 336 MB with all the apps that I want. The GHOST compressed image is is 134.270.005 Bytes. I use FAT32 so that I can get to my HDD with a boot disk. Due the one man's post I understand the intent of NLITE much better. i did not think of it in that way. Sometimes to understand a question or a problem we are too far involved. Likle seeing the forrest for the trees. Well, everyone, thank you

I've been following NLITE since the days of Win 3.x I think this is the same group. I thought the goal was to reduce Windows version whatever to its lowest terms. I am not talking badly about any person who has ever posted here. I do not mean this post to apply to anyone here or those who may read this and this is only my own opinion and observation and I may well be wrong. We all know that any version of Windows... past, present and future is bloated. I thought that this group was dedicated to removing that bloat. But I see people asking how to integrate this and that and the other into NLITE. Again, I am NOT talking badly to any person here and do not want to cause a flame war, so please do NOT take this as such and please do not flame me. All that said isn't there a point in this development where we must reach a point where we have done the best possible job and say that no more can be done. Select a Win XP, for instance SP2, and say that we will work on this but no further but that we will clean it up as best we can. I have used NLITE as a basis and then have removed things beyond what NLITE does. It is frustrating work and Microsoft gets in its own way. Where is MHUNI.... I hope he is very busy with a very good job wherever he is and has no time anymore for this anymore. I hope he is not discouraged by all the posts about how this and that and the other does not work and how do I integrate the very latest bloatware from M$Soft. If you want to flame me or would wish to communicate with me other than here, or to educate me please send responses to gymnp@yahoo.com I do not know what point that I am trying to make. I spend the majority of my computer life trying to hack WinXP SP2 With help from NLITE and my own hacking I think I have done well. It is possible to go beyond NLITE and I have done things to WinXP SP2 that are not allowed to be discussed here. Folks, I really do spend too much of my life hacking Windows, I'm not married or have a girlfrien right now. Please don't start arguments and if you want to tell me how bad I am email me as above. My goal that i think I have made is to make just ONE reduced WinXP SP2 image that can be restored to any PC Compuyer. I cannot post this here and I will not talk to those who want a simple EXE file because there is not such. Anyway, I have talked too much and ONE MORE TIME do noy start a war or any bad comments about my post. Moderator will probably remove this anyway. The End
  11. Sounds like you need to hit F-6 shortly after the XP install CD starts and load SATA drivers from floppy disk. You might try Toshiba's web site to get them. My Toshiba notebook uses ICH8M-E/M drivers. Doesn't mean your model does, however. I did a Google search and found this site for all except the SATA drivers: http://driverscollection.com/?H=Equium%20L10&By=Toshiba There is nothing wrong with your computer, just that you have to have the SATA 'mini-drivers' for the XP installation to be able to see the SATA drive. My Toshiba doesn't have a built in floppy drive so I use an external USB drive to load the mini-driver. Hope tis helps and answers your question // Slinkie I have a Toshiba Equim L10-L300 model. It had factory WinXp pre-installed. The problem is (I see its a common one ) that I couldnt find the Toshiba recovery disc. I had a copy of WinXP Home SP2 32bit I chose to Install it forgetting that I would need SATA/AHCI drivers. How do I know what driver to select? Is it a Motherboard-hdd problem, hence the need for SATA/AHCI drivers?
  12. There are folders in \Documents and Settings that I want to eliminate. They are: My Recent Documents and Favorites and History. I do not wish to simply clean them, I want to remove them and never have them created again. The folders entitled "My" are so juvenile. I don't want to rename them I want them never to be generated. Anyone know how to do that ? It is not simply a registry hack. NLite for XP doeas a great job, now how to go beyond NLite V/R Slinkie
  13. Appreciate the response and the info. For others who might want to know, animations are contained in the following WinXP Pro SP2 files: sysocmgr.exe wextract.exe cmprops.dll compatUI.dll hdwwiz.cpl mmfutil.dll newdev.dll objsel.dll SHDOCVW.DLL SHELL32.DLL Slinkie
  14. In my N-Lited WinXP PRO SP2 I wanted to remove the '' flying papers '' animation that happens when copying files. I used RESHACKER and deleted the AVI section of SHELL32.DLL and '' flying papers '' is gone. Also gone is that moving flashlight (looks like something else) animation. There are two more animations that I cannot find. When XP is searching for hardware I have the moving magnifying glass and when the drivers are located and are loading I have '' flying papers '' again. It seems that all the animations are not located in SHELL32.DLL Would someone in the forum tell where those animations are, please. The benefit to N-Lite is that: (1) the WinXP hard disk footprint is slightly smaller and (2) Windows is slightly faster. v/r Slinkie
