  1. Alrighty... I found your machine online... but from what I've read, it doesn't officially support 48 megs of ram to begin with... Do you have a camera available to take a picture of the ram compartment? Or perhaps a picture of the ram module itself? I have gone through my old machines, and dug up a Pentium 166MMX with 48megs ram and a 5Gig hard drive. It has USB ports and apparently fried PCMCIA ports (x2). I have a USB CDROM drive, an LPT (printer port) CD ROM drive, and a PCMCIA CDROM drive... I do not wish to *sell* them, but if you have a need... like I said before, if you can figure out shipping.... I fear I may not have ram to fit your machine, but you never know... If I could just find the user manual in English I would have all the info I need. As far as installing Win2k goes... It may be more stable, but are all the drivers available? Speaking of drivers, do you have all the drivers installed under 9x so far? A slight driver issue could really slow down the machine. Years ago, when I first got online... I met someone 'Grizz in the woods'... He mailed me a complete inkjet printer with new ink cartridges and a pack of paper... for free. I still got the printer. If I can somehow 'pass it forward', and send you some hardware to help you out, I would be very happy; wish you were closer, or in an easier to ship to country... I don't know how much the shipping would/could be... but I am offering up at least the laptop I mentioned above, and perhaps the LPT CDROM drive (it has drivers for DOS, 3.1, 9x, and above). I also have a few other laptops that I could ship you (weight and cost becomes the issue here). Do you have Windows 2000? I *own* 35 legit copies of Windows 2000 (at least I got the certificate of authenticity with keycode). I also have a computer tower... It is a P4.. .don't remember the speed (1.8Ghz?), with 512megs ram. I need to get $100 for it (to pay the guy I bought it from). If you are possibly interested, let me know. The tower has Windows XP on it, and weighs about 40 pounds. It also has a 40gig Hard drive (or a 30?) If you can take a few decent pics of your machine (more specifically, the ram module and ram 'slot'), I may still be able to dig up something that'll fit... I *really* wish you were closer... your problem is right up my alley (something I enjoy and am good at). Not to forget, I got loads of older machines similar to yours- if you are capable, I will gladly *give* you one. Playing VOBS on low CPU I used a program called QuickView for DOS. If you google it, you'll get a LOT of false results (popular name). If you are still interested, ask me for a link in your response. Using it entails copying the VOB files onto the hard drive, setting QV (QuickView) to 486cpu, highest priority, DOS-only. If your video card has UnivBE (or something like that, can't remember... Universal Video BIOS extention or something similar), your performance will be MUCH better. I gotta go... catch ya later!
  2. I got a couple of things to say about this... First- **ALWAYS** run a scandisk/chkdsk BEFORE messing with your partitions! Second- If you gotta 'fix' a partition so you can install Windows... copy all yer data OFF the beasty and do a REAL, FULL format of the ENTIRE drive. Remove all the existing partitions, create ONE master partition, format that puppy... scandisk, scandisk, scandisk... and even then, I may *STILL* demand replacing the drive. Third- It seems to me like the initial problem was caused by a power supply that is flaky... or underpowered for the system at peak consumption. The lag in power caused the hard drive to lose juice, which in turn caused the errors on the drive. (Just because Windows doesn't b..ch about the random reboot doesn't mean the hard drive wasn't damaged) you can only paint over the rust so many times before you gotta actually do some body work.... I would blow out the entire hard drive- kill the partitions and start totally **FRESH**. If the drive takes too many 'hits' like this, it'll never be reliable again.
  3. sorry if I'm late to the party... but what is XPize? I can't find a link on the board.... Judging from the 'teaser'... sounds like it patches the visuals of non-XP themed apps/dlls to use themes... am I right? So... what does that mean?? and where can I find it? TIA! EDIT Found it at http://www.xpize.net It is a program that replaces the older-looking, throw-back visuals in XP with visuals more in line with the rest of XP. Example: The file copy animation is the same one used back in 95 (methinks). It 'ought' to be different... and using more colors... like the 'updated' visuals... in the same newer style... load this up... and that animation is now actually *animated*... with full color support. I wonder... could this be used to 'brand' XP? Could I make a 'theme' for XPize, and make a custom XP that has my own visual style from the ground up? (load up my own bitmaps or whatever for XPize to plugin? what all does XPize 'plug into'?) Sounds like an uber app... gonna go sniff around the website I found some more... my answers may already be there...
  4. Don't feel alone, Win95 users! I know of *many* individuals that still use Windows 95 *daily*. Ranging from 286/16mhz to P4/2.8Ghz! DOS gamers all the way to entire businesses that still use it for their in-house networking needs. A 486/dx66mhz with 32megs ram that is used daily for internet access; a 386/sx25 with 16megs ram used daily for word processing. And I won't even begin talking about the machines at the local library.... Windows 95 is NOT dead; just removed from the public eye. I know of even more people still using Windows 98SE. I knew 1 person that used ME. They chucked the computer when Vista came out... some people are just born to be losers, I guess. (no offense to actual die-hard ME users- it *is* better than 98SE if you know what you are doing)
  5. I have had some success using the extremely cheap wireless cards seen all over EBay for less than $15 each. Finding the drivers is a pain though. And I can tell you a secret... WPA isn't going to be 'happy' on 95. Don't ask me why... all I can tell you honestly is I have yet to get it to work on 95. Blew out a wireless card the last time I tried it. Still not sure what killed what and how... but I won't be trying it again. Also; "Hotswapping" a wireless card on 95 is NOT suggested. Plug it in, turn on the machine. Turn off machine, unplug the card. 9x doesn't include an easy way of refreshing the IP address; the OS expects a WIRED, ALWAYS ON connection. This poses a few interesting problems... You **must** use the driver supplied network software; otherwise you can never configure the connection to use an access point. You may wish to create a shortcut to run "ipconfig /renew_all" whenever your wireless connection gets flaky (to renew the IP address and connection). The hard part is finding the right software to work with the right driver.... on Windows 95. Orinoco is the company that makes the wireless cards that work on 95 (to my knowledge). Atheros also makes 95 compatible network cards. I own 3 Orinoco wifi cards, 1 came with all the 95 files on its CD. I also own 5 Atheros wifi cards, and 3 of them came with 95 files included. I have never seen a Linksys or DLink wifi card come with 95 drivers (not since 2002/3). Then again, I buy most of my parts wholesale/OEM... Important note: The driver CDs that *do* work on 95 DO NOT include drivers for any other hardware! So, the 1 Orinoco CD I have does NOT support the other cards. The 4 Atheros CDs do NOT include drivers for any other card. Ever looked for the ac'97 sound driver for a motherboard? It is **just like** that- totally useless without the original CD.
  6. Well, could you post the actual specs of the machine? Like; Dell Latitude D400 512megs Ram 40Gig HD Windows XP service pack 3 beta or Gateway Solo 2000 Pentium 1 90Mhz 8 Megs built-in, 2 open slots 8Gig HD I ask because I have a MULTITUDE of older laptops. You say you live in China; I do not know postage and shipping rates, but I *hate* throwing good parts into the garbage. If I somehow have a compatible RAM stick or two, and you'll pay shipping, I will **gladly** ship them to you. I have done this on other message boards for other people in the past; I create a private EBay auction (with a BUY IT NOW set at $0.99US- to cover the actual shipping materials) and email you the details to bid on the part(s)... we both get our backsides covered by PayPal and EBay that way. (Normally I do not ship to China, but I will make an exception for you... sounds like something I went through quite a few times...) Good luck!!! Your story may have even inspired me to pull out my Pentium 90 machine... I used it for DVDs (downloaded to the hard drive) and mp3s about 5 years ago... The little machine still boots up 95 OSR2.1... May I ask if there is another program you could use for IMs? I am not familiar with any other languages, but I *do* have a way of forcing software to just work... I also have no idea about using multiple languages on a computer... Have you tried to use Windows 2000 on this machine yet? It is possible to strip down W2000, much like 98... I have booted Win2000 on as little as 12megs of ram (I do not suggest it), and was still able to browse the web (at worse than dial up speeds on my 15megbit connection). Also, does your program (or any website you visit) require Flash or Java to run? I do not have the info right now, but there are faster alternative apps to replace Flash and Java... Have you defragmented your hard drive and set your virtual memory manually accordingly? On my P90, 8meg system I had to manually set my virtual memory to 1,512megabytes (Windows 9x seems to 'max' your virtual memory at around 2-3 times your ram size on its own, in my personal experience). You can save some bytes in ram by NOT using a wallpaper, NOT using custom cursors, NOT using system sounds, and also by NOT having icons on your desktop. DO NOT select 'hide icons' on your desktop, just delete any icons you do not absolutely need to have on the desktop. "Hide Icons" uses even more ram. You can safely use a 'pattern' (not 'wallpaper') without adding slow downs. Also, if you have any extra fonts on the machine... remove them for a slight ram increase. Do you have Rambooster installed? I know of other such programs, but RamBooster still installs on 95A and does a terrific job at cleaning out ram (load and run it before you load QQ... need more info? http://www.download.com/RAMBooster/3000-2086_4-10028673.html ) If anything I've mentioned hasn't been tried yet, feel free to ask for more help here. I will monitor this thread for a while, and throw in my 2cents as needed. Good luck my friend!
  7. Alrighty, I have since done a totally clean install of ME... and I used Windows Update to install all of the TWENTY FOUR (24!!?) updates, including IE6+SP1 and more IE6 patches... Then, I ran the ME Service Pack.... At first, I had the same issues I posted earlier... the MSHTML.DLL error in particular.... But, that was last night... I fired the tower up this morning only to witness some files being copied and tweakui settings and whatnot (this was the SECOND TIME this install that the tweakui window happened)... I sat and waited... and waited... and waited... started to be convinced the darn thing locked up, and right when I went for the CTRL ALT DEL, it snapped outta it and booted up. I haven't had any issues since then, other than video files randomly going all grey with only audio.... and I ain't got a clue what is causing that... I installed the K-Lite Codec pack, and it seems that MP9 is conflicting somehow with it... anyone know if there is a particular install order for this? Fingers still crossed- but it looks like you need to install IE6+SP1 before this service pack.... if this is true, could you just add IE6+SP1 to it? or make 2 downloads, one with and one without? I was about ready to throw away my ME cd until I tried WindowsUpdate.Microsoft.com first... (and the default link to it claims I am on a MAC?!) Thanks for your help folks.
  8. I have installed WinME on a brand new drive today on my previously (read as: elsewhere) mentioned Win98SE tower.... I am sorry to report that after 4 reinstall attempts (fdisk, format, install..) I have to report the same exact issues that someone else had posted.... I get NUMEROUS explorer errors, occasionally with the error reporting window and a "link" to a fix... I also get numerous MSHTML.DLL errors... I thought this package was to specifically FIX these types of errors.... So, is it safe to assume that this includes quite a few NON-STANDARD fixes, or what? I was hoping to find something that was reliable... This is my *first* ME system, and I am totally shocked by how horrible it truly is "out-of-the-box" compared to 98SE... Speaking of which, WHERE ARE ALL THE UPDATES FOR ME?? This package seems AWFULLY SMALL to be a round up of updates large enough to be called a service pack... I apologize if I am rude- it was not intended... I am a n00b at ME...
  9. has anyone done this here??? at one time I had done it, but I do not recall what files I had used to do this with....
  10. Why *should* I even worry about DUN?? I use WiFi... and I don't use IE. either... so do I still need the DUN update??
  11. bit torrent link is down.... i had a major hard drive crash.... stuck using the p166mmx as only pc for a month.... any chance of a re-up?
  12. I have this upgrade CD... actually, I got quite a few original "upgrade" cds... You might wanna check ebay.... once in a blue moon some cool stuff pops up there... Seeing as how this particular CD is a "Holy Grail" of sorts, I won't part with mine either. (bought mine when a local PC shop went out of bussiness for $5 new)
  13. Let me start by clearing one thing up... I didn't intend to offend a single active member of the community... Not one bit. If I did, I am extremely sorry. You guys have greatly helped the world. What I was attempting to bring to light was the total misunderstanding of losing a valuable asset to this community. And as a result of that misunderstanding, some of the rumors I've heard seemed to hold some weight. Now, I must admit I was out of line... but thankfully at least someone came to my side and proclaimed the need to vent about it... The "invisible opressive hand" is what kept them from complaining... This all came to light after realizing that despite people's cries for volunteers in their individual threads, no one had requested a volunteer here... Now, that *really* irks me... (for easier translation for non-English: that was something that made no sense, so I was left feeling really confused about the purposes of this place)... and combined with the rumors of Microsoft stamping out everything older... and mix in the MSFN.*ORG* and the disappearance of a valuable person on the team... yeah, I yelled and I screamed for a good solid 5 minutes. Now that I got that off my chest... Oh yeah, for those that wonder about it... all you need to know is.... Even a genius can be a rude person. I hope I didn't cross anything there... Perhaps we could make an exception about the "not talking about why peeps are banned"? I *know* it opens a can... but perhaps a closed, admin-only thread that we can see... showing the offense (or at least listing which # on the list of rules was broken). Seriously, if an individual can contribute something needed so dearly... and then be snuffed out... I am sorry to proclaim I believe we deserve some sort of an explaination... in a public-type forum... yeah, I got a bad day... but at least it accomplished something... maybe I could convice y'all to actually regroup as a single unit working together instead of a bunch of little groups re-inventing the wheel over and over again... I don't mean to detract from the MAJOR advancements (yeah, even the supposedly minor advancements are MAJOR with 9x!), it just kills me to see all this potential... (Please don't take it the wrong way guys... to come so far in this state is nothing short of amazing! I just wish this place would lend itself more to this development... it seems to outright hinder it so often...) Now that all of that is off my shoulders.... feel free to kill this thread. I understand a little bit more about how this place works.... just wish a little more common sense was used... if I get banned, at least someone heard me- maybe the gears of change could use the lubricant?
  14. I guess this place is going to hell in a handbasket..... ?Why was someone in particular banned? ?Would I get banned if I create an AWESOME fix for something **greatly** needed? ?How's come you keep their FILES and LINKS alive after you killed them? I don't agree with hearing these things... and since it was forbidden to speak of it... I guess I have no choice but to have conflicted feeling about MSFN.org now.... All that was ever said is inappropriate conduct.... like what??? They wrote a freakin' driver! Way to go and help kill off a much needed niche OS... I am totally renigging this offer to everyone that accesses this site. I am *not* going to contribute to something that won't justify banning an extremely valuable member. And publicly forbidding conversation on this is ludacris. Reading about the ban... and seeing this thread I started.... everyone here is a bunch of cynics.... I don't think anyone here actually wants to help anyone, or even help to keep Windows 98 alive... methinks this is a place for old guys to congregate and talk about the 'good times'. Yeah, you help out a little bit... and yeah, you even put together a package to install all the updates.... Guess what? We have more than 2 update packages on this site.... We have updates that are the same between these 'packages'. AND We got improper file versions between these packages. Does anyone give a sh!t? hell no, I wanna do my *own* stupid mindless bullsh!t. I enjoy the update packages, and I **greatly** appreciate the help I recieved during that time... I am *not* referring to anyone in particular... I am mainly commenting on the invisible oppressive hand that is affecting us all here. Just exactly how far in M$ pocket **IS** MSFN.ORG??? And since when is it WRONG to ask what happened to a valuable comrade? I might as well just stop visiting this site.... there comes a point in time when you have to just admit something is fooked up. Yeah, we wanna get our broken pieces of software running... but, na... we are happy b!tching about nobody sending in log files.... too busy to notice someone posted to volunteer... can't be bothered, either.... This thread is at least a week old. Screw it. If the admins believe that my mispelt swearing to avoid filters is a bannable offense, then I guess I'll finally know where the line is drawn... since I AIN'T ALLOWED TO ASK. ((DISCLAIMER:: I am having a bad day, and just found out **** was banned for no known reason. Then I found the thread that says DO NOT ASK WHY. Ok? Do you know where I'm comming from now?)) Methinks this whole site is just a misinformation campaign of sorts.... so many people claim to be wanting to help, but many many more just b!tch and get in the way. And out of those that are actually helping, most of them are honestly too busy to see anything to completion (as far as helping someone else out goes). I've tried to assist in creating some order out of this chaos.... No one gives a sh!t. So, neither do I now.
  15. how about using the internet archive database to download the files directly off the ACorp servers as it was in 2005? http://web.archive.org in the "WAY BACK MACHINE" textbox, put yer URL.... You'll figure it out, try it!
  16. Thanks for the link... I honestly had forgotten what kind of info your site had... I thought it was just Windows stuff... thanks! I noticed quite a few people have looked at this thread... so how's come nobody else volunteered? OR let it be known they would like a free tester... What this thread is about, is individuals that are willing to dedicate a portion of their time to helping these projects further advance... I noticed a LOT of the people doing these packages make comments wishing people would attach logs or similar things... well, this thread is where those people can find others to attach logs and whatnot... I assumed others would like to help them out, so I opted for a public thread for communications hoping others would step up... They just need a few peeps to *actually* post logs files and errors... I also noticed a similar thing happening with my offer to host bittorrent files (seed for free)... (I know peeps already do this, but why not get an actual group organized somehow?) If nobody *wants* this type of offer, then just remove the threads please... Sorry for wasting time and space...
  17. By all means I ould appreciate a copy of WMP 6.0... I have actually ended up repartitioning the hard drive... Now I got NT4.0 and 98SE installed... trying to dig up info on installing WfWG and 95 on the other partitions... I divided the hard drive into a 2gig partition (for 98SE currently... the most used OS) and a 300meg partition (for 95 and/or WfWG) a 300meg partition (for NT4) and a 750ish meg partition (for files used across the OSs) So far, it all works GREAT!!!! I got Winamp 2.95 (I checked, it is NOT a 3.0 beta), and have been using this laptop to stream some radio and surf the net for the past few days... Works **** near perfect (considering what it is)... I remembered how to tweak Winamp (I got a P90 8Meg laptop that is a media player now), and now it all runs smoooooooth. I figured out the ram issue (mentioned briefly in the AutoPatcher thread), and now it has 48megs instead of possible 64... and I discovered I got a 32meg stick it will take inside of a 486 laptop sitting here.... (don't wanna kill the 486 though, it is *nearly* as capable) so, any suggestions for low footprint software?? open office takes MAJOR harddrive space... and I just need Word compatibility.... (I still need to strip out the other proggies in Open Office...) I can't get over how well this puppy runs... TThe soundcard has treble and base controls... and 3D and ZPort something... bottom line- audio sounds pretty darn good considering the size and age of the speakers...
  18. Drugwash- can you elaborate on the RAM situation??? I've *never* heard of that.... FPM? We did already discuss the messed up 98 cd... I'm testing it out with as many apps as I can run on this lappy... the browseui.dll error was at least fixed by autopatcher... I don't remember if this error happens on all new installs with this CD I used or not... not important though, as methinks it is in the CD... I was just wondering if anyone else had errors in browseui.dll... Hmm... mixed ram types.... gotta look into that- thanks for the heads up!
  19. I am starting this thread for all the wanna be guinea pigs.... Since this is (un)Official... some information should be listed of the machine(s) you are offering up for testing.... If more info on anything is needed, please post the requirements! I just took a stab at it... So, as an example, I have this laptop I've mentioned a lot lately for use as a tester... Pentium MMX 166Mhz Intel 430TX PCI Chipset (Gateway Solo 2300A) 64.2Megs RAM (65788 KB) VGA NeoMagic MagicGraph NM2160 3.2Gig Hard disk "SB Pro" (yamaha op3sax OEM driver used) Windows 98SE (unique OEM release 4.90.3000ish) I used Dr.Hardware SysInfo V 9.0e SHAREWARE to pull the above information... Link is -> http://www.dr-hardware.com/pghpload.htm (650kish) The proggie runs from real DOS (the top download link is for the Windowsish version), and *can* run from a boot floppy. I just unzipped it to C:\DrHW I am currently in the process of trying to figure out a multi-boot config for this little lappy... email me if you can assist.
  20. Howdy, y'all! I've already said this before, but I'm putting in a post all by itself in case you missed the offer.... I have a pretty speedy connection (15Megabits) and about 8 gigs free on my tower.... If anyone has any files for any 9x version of Windows OR OLDER (DOS included here, folks), I'll gladly download and seed them as long as I can spare the hard drive space. I'm pretty sporadic lately in my ventures online... so if you have a newer version available- email or post here again! I still have AP1.8 shared, working on the newer versions now... I *will not* host anything totally illegal. If it is a grey area, I will make the final decision possibly without discussion... (I am not a leecher, nor am I a thief. I know these are **old**- still could go to prison over it though...) All I ask for in return is...... Be here. Don't give up on the community! Share the files for at least a day or two. Keep me in the LOOP!!!! email me- PUT MSFN.ORG AS FIRST PART OF SUBJECT!!!! ben~DOT~rossington~AT~"~gmailDOTcom~" (if you can't figure my email out... ben.rossington is the first half) (gmail.com is the other half) Keep it up, folks! I will keep my psuedo-server running as much as possible!!!!
  21. Well I lied... No actually what happened is I found some of the drivers I've been looking for and thought I'd give installing them a quick spin to see if they'd fix some of the problems I've been having... no dice. I did a screen grab before I tossed my XP back on though, so here's your answer in the image I attached. And no, before you ask I have no idea how I managed to get such a high version number installed! --iWindoze Hey now... that *really* resembles the info I was pulling off my funky 98SE cdrom.... I am currently using a P166MMX with 32megs RAM (has a 32meg stick and a 16 meg stick, reports as 64megs ram... might have to pull the 16 out, the whole system is shaky with it) I installed my 4.90.3000 98SE.... had an error in Browseui.dll, caused a loop of crashes... boot into safe mode, ran ap 1.6 and the error went away... Is this browseui.dll error "common"? Any ideas? It did this *before* I added the suspect ram.... :gee:
  22. yeah, it works ok... I was hoping you would know of which earlier version would run the smoothest... I seem to recall 2.52 or something similar was the last to use the low-quality decoders... low quality decoder is just fine for me- if you know what I mean now.... I shoe-horned another 16meg stick into this just now... seems to be ok.... weird thing is, the laptop has no onboard ram... and has a 32meg stick and a 16 meg stick... but it has 64megs now?
  23. Okay... I scanned over those links.... and methinks I will veer towards Delphi... or perhaps some other RAD software.... I realize now just how intricate C is... hance, methinks I'll steer away from it for now.... (still a little deeper than I'm ready for) I *do* like Visual Basic... I just wish I could get my hands on a copy that would run on this little laptop.... (been scouring the 'net for Version 3, 4, 5, or 6... still can't find it...)
  24. Let me clarify, okay? I would *love* to find a programming language/suite that will run on an old laptop I got for tinking on.... It is a lowly P166MMX, 32megs ram. I have a high end, sweet Duo laptop for heavier stuff (VB being one of them) I know that at one point, this laptop (the 166MMX) was more than capable of being used to code more than capable apps... I know for a fact a version of Delphi exists that would be pimp on it, for instance... I would like to know what languages are available for such a modest environment... Hell, I would even consider dropping it down to Win3.11 if needed... The bottom line is, I at least need to be able to code apps that can easily run on this machine... at least. I am testing it's battery pack now... seems to be somewhat OK... has been on for nearly 30mins and reports 85% left.... wow... could I be so lucky?! While I *do* have a VB background of sorts, I broke my teeth on Commodore BASIC... The big deal of VB for me is I finally learned an object oriented language... so I guess methinks I got enough courage to self-teach another object oriented language.... How hard *is* C? I mean, can you link me up to darn near everything I would need from the ground up? I might be interested then... From what I understand, C is more *nixish than other languages... (maybe that should be reversed?) And Delphi looks like an option... still gotta check that link that was posted, though....
