  1. Is there a screenshot of the new 'shine' effect for the start button in 1.6? I liked the default icon and was hoping I could keep it, or perhaps there's a way to extract the default icon?

Mightn't be a big deal but was curious :)

You can always go back to the old version if you have the installation file. I'd export the settings for your old one like TwoCables mentioned and then restore the old versions settings if you decide to go back to it, after uninstalling the newer SiB. No idea if it would just let you downgrade without uninstalling the new version first. The "shine" effect matches what stock 8.1 Update 1 includes for it's Start Screen button, which has moved from popping up in the corner to where the Start Button is usually. Microsoft describes it as a shine effect in their list of changes, if I remember correctly.

Wait. So what did it used to do before? I'm too new to Windows 8.1 to know. I didn't even have Windows 8. I'm just trying out the 90-Day Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation.

Windows 8 originally didn't have anything where the Start Button traditionally appeared. Instead, if you moved your mouse to the very bottom left corner of the screen, a thumbnail of the Start Screen would appear. If you left clicked it, it took you to the new interface Start Screen. If you right clicked it, then you got the same options you got by right-clicking the Start Button (or Start Menu) in StartIsBack, IF you have the option checked "Use Advanced Start Button context menu", with the addition of the "Properties" option since that's specific to configuring the Start Menu.

It was still like this in Windows 8.1 until the Spring 2014 Update came out. That's at least partially why SiB had to be updated for full compatibility with the new update.

  3. Yep! I'm just now 100% finished setting up the 90-day Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation and still no problems (I've completely "moved in" so to speak). Wow. I should say something to that Addictive Tips site. lol

There's nothing sweeter than when everything comes together like this.

On the site's comments for that article, it appears about five months ago people started noting that the tweak doesn't work under Windows 8.1, but it appears that all along it was hit or miss for some people.

I know what you mean re: when things come together. :)

  4. WOOT! Hehe...

I think I can happily report that I succeeded in fixing my problem by formatting, starting over, and not doing this tweak this time:

    http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/prevent-windows-8-file-explorer-from-deleting-images-thumbnail-cache/

So far, so good. It's the only difference this time around. Plus, I think I solved the slow loading time in any File Explorer window without doing this tweak: I disabled Defender and Windows Firewall and now Windows 8.1 File Explorer is just as fast for me as Windows 7 Windows Explorer (which is extremely fast). Go figure. :) Unfortunately, I disabled both at the same time, so I don't know which one was the solution. I'm betting on Defender, but still.

So yeah, I'd say that I owe it to StartIsBack+ 1.6 because if I didn't begin trying it out, then I never would have learned that that tweak is bad news! Oh, and I was having other stupid (but very annoying) problems that I think were totally solved by just not doing that tweak this time!

In other words, I am pretty seriously considering paying the $2.99 for StartIsBack because now I'm beginning to think that Windows 8.1 isn't so bad. lol Sure, I could go with a free third-party Taskbar program, but all of the others require at least one extra process to run in the background. That just seems silly to me. I want this to be as native as possible, and that's exactly what I'm getting with StartIsBack. It's beautiful and sublime. :)

  5. I've had StartIsBack for about 5 days now, but it's already saying that it has expired. I'm not going to pay $2.99 just to keep evaluating it. I'm supposed to have 30 days here.

    Can you help?

    Sending PM.

Why not try Classic Shell, it's just as good if not better, Plus the maker of Classic Shell is very helpful, with any Classic Shell problems and it's Free. :angel

You know, any other argument aside, that's just rude to post that in the support thread for SiB. Why not PM the guy your recommendation instead?

  7. Is this final version of SIB since Microsoft confirmed that start menu is coming back in a "future update"/Windows 9?

Look back a page. We talked about it already.

  8. Generally, I'm excited (and p***ed a bit ofc). There are a lot of stuff @BUILD which makes MS look better.

Not sure if 8.1.2 start menu will mean StartIsBack++, StartIsBack-, or nothing at all, but we have to accept change.

If you have ideas for my mad skills your feedback is welcome.

As mentioned by others, I doubt if MS's new Start Menu would have all of the same features as yours, and some people might still prefer StartIsBack+/++/- over the native Start menu just because it would look more familiar to them.

  9. Weird! If I follow these steps: going to startisback.com > Support > General community forum, then I can read all the questions and replies there without any problems.
But when I try clicking on the link I posted above, there will be a box asking me to join or log in. Why is it so strange? It's exactly the same link I copied from the address bar.

    Confirmed, and I agree, weird.

  10. sorry but responding your case, afaik it would appear after using the app for several times. I don't know exactly, but that's what happened after I installed Firefox. If it has never been used, so I guess it'd not appear.

Good catch, I believe you're right!

  11. Yes, its Thunderbird. All users have thunderbird install, only some get that submenu. Trying to figure out why.

Just curious if by chance the ones who are not getting the submenu are Standard users instead of Administrators?

  12. I'm looking at running StartIsBack+ on a WIndows Server 2012 remote desktop thing. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to lock it down so normal users don't go into the settings and screw up their start is back settings? All I can think of is making the registry key (eg. HKLM\Software\StartIsBack) read only? Thanks for any tips.

    I'm not positive but this might help;

  13. Thanks, but when I run "startscreen /pintostartmenu pathtofile" from the command prompt I get "startscreen" is not recognized. This is under Windows Server 2012 R2.

Although when I run "startscreen" from the Run command it brings up the start screen. is this something that cannot be executed from the command prompt?

He probably meant StartIsBack instead of StartScreen.

  14. It's working with a relatively fresh install of Windows 8.1 with the 2014 Spring Update integrated.

roirraWedorehT: I'm just curious where you were able to get the 2014 Spring Update. I've not been able to find a method that works, including a registry hack that supposedly enables getting it via Microsoft Update.

    Answering in PM.

  15. StartIsBack +1.6 BETA 1

    http://www.startisback.com/StartIsBackPlus_setupBETA.exe

    beta 0 changes

    - Windows 8.1 Spring Update support

    - Default start button now has 'shine' effect

    - Start menu preloads icons more aggresively
    - All Programs XP style new program highlighting works better
    - Hot screen corners work better on multiple monitors
    Fixed:
    - 'Make start menu adjacent to vertical taskbar' was broken with auto-hide taskbar
    - 'Remove and prevent access to Shutdown, Restart and Hibernate' policy didn't allow logging off

I'm afraid there won't be many more changes as 1.6 deadline is soon.

However, I'm open to suggestions what to do with Spring Update gifts and craps we've received.

Also please test this version well. There were some DWM crashes on Spring Update related to immersive taskbar, so tell me if you confirm those.

It's working with a relatively fresh install of Windows 8.1 with the 2014 Spring Update integrated.

  16. There is a bunch of minor issues on Windows 8.1 Update 1, they shall be sorted out before official release.

I've been busy with my new job.

Thanks for working on an update, and congratulations on your new job! :-)

  17. Congrats, roirraWedorehT! And I echo your "Happy Thanksgiving" to all in the US.

    Cheers and Regards

Thank you, I hope yours and everyone else's Thanksgivings were happy and safe! I wish I had more time to be active on here again. :(

  18. Question and comment: Is Start is Back for Windows 8.1 a trial version or is it a full version until testing is completed? (the purchase option doesn't specify which version I am purchasing).

Also noticed a little bug with the All Programs menu set to 'Windows XP' mode, I can't drag and drop program shortcuts and pin them to the Taskbar. The only way to pin them to taskbar is to right click on the program and select pin to taskbar.

Great program btw. Appreciate all the work that's gone into it.

    Sid

Hi! They're all trial versions, 30 day trial IIRC. Testing has completed and v1.0 of StartIsBack+ has been released! :)
