  1. Unfortunately, there's no Adobe Flash player for a 64-bit OS yet so I couldn't test all sites.

I used secunia psi and it downloaded adobe flash player for my win7 x64 install.

On above, and related to it as well.....

Unless you specifically run the x64 version of Internet Explorer (there is a separate shortcut/exe) in x64 Vista/7, you are running a 32 bit version of Internet Explorer... The two x64 oses are still not configured to run the x64 iexplore.exe by default..

I imagine this is because of the lack of 64 bit plugins (such as Adobe Flash Player) for it.. So, the more correct saying would be "there's no Adobe Flash player for a 64-bit browser yet". Once a 64 bit plugin is available, I suspect you will be able to isntall both the 32 bit and 64 bit plugin (one for each version of the browser).

I really have seen very little difference in browser speed from 32 bit to 64 bit version (of a given app)..

  2. The brand I went to several years ago after getting a bit upset with my last Creative card, and have been very happy with, has supported their products extremely well. Auzentech!!!!

I turned to them for DDL and never looked back. The X-Fi looked interesting when it came out, but still wasn't ready to dish out the money for it after having owned several Live and Audigy cards before it. The drivers were lacking and I figured a risk on a small company supporting a new product couldn't be worse then Creative was doing at the time.

  3. Hmm.. I know what was triggering CRC errors for me in VirtualPC 2007 (well, at least turning this off did the trick)..

Hardware Virtualization.. Turned it off for a boot.. Ran Autopatcher fine. Just going to re-enable it when I am done. :)

  4. wow VirtualBox is better than Ms Virtual PC 2004 imo :thumbup its fast & it supports usb like vmware.

hoping for drag and drop support!

Only thing I miss is com port support.. I tried to use a USB/Serial adapter through VirtualBox.. That was a no go.. USB Pen drive worked though..

Virtual PC 2007's direct access to the com port from the host works. :thumbup

  5. Hey all.

Just wanted to let you know how easy it was to setup a network printer (HP 2570) on Vista.

I plugged the printer into the switch, did some basic configuration at the printer lcd, and searched for network printer in Vista. Installed and working in a matter of seconds.. On the XP machines in the house I had to install 130 MB from the HP cd-rom before it would work.

Just wanted to let you all know :thumbup

Cant wait for HP to update the driver for my 2600n..

BTW, you probably didnt need all 130 mb of the junk hp sometimes includes.

Still, I do like my hp printers..

  6. I solve this issue.

The update Hotfix KB916089 Version 5 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089/en-us ) (Msi.dll 3.1.4000.2805) solve the issue. I don't have 100% cpuusage and I still have a GUI when installing programs through a msi-file. The GUI wasn't shown while installing, so that programs which have 2 or more cds fails to install, when I installed other patches who had a never msi.dll than MSI 3.1V2.

    I'm so happy :thumbup:wub:

Yeah, ran in to that last week trying to install Street and Trips 2006.. Took me a few minutes to track down the the probelm and then the hotfix that updated msi.dll.. Going to try this new one out so I can have the fix and still run MSI installers correctly..

Tarun, not spyware in this case.. Seen it on 2 machines that are completely clean.. (1 doesnt even get connected to the net actively).. Before 916089 v5 there was another hotfix (I dont remember the number now, the one I removed earlier) that also updated msi.dll but didnt cut it for this bug..

    Update: Found it..

Actually there were a couple updates that replaced msi.dll

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906219

Never installed that one.. (Oldest update I can find that is newer then the MSI 3.1 base install)

    And

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914810

Which happens to deal with a problem with Automatic Updates too.. It is the one that caused my installer for Streets and Trips to fail..

    Msi.dll version 3.1.4000.2648

It didnt do anything to resolve the slow or dead stop updating I ran in to occasionally. It would still take forever to scan..

  7. Own some goofy cd burning software at sme time I guess?

    Roxio or Adaptec possibly?

Anyway.. Way to go.. Not everyone would feel comfortable going in to the registry to fix this themselves..

At some point, I found a program my by some company who makes cd burning software that fixes this problem commonly left by uninstalling some poorly designed burning software..

  8. I don't theorize like you man, I just report what I have seen and done.

    Theorize?

    Just checked out 'ifn.exe'...

the reason it dissappears after you run it is due to:

    1) Once run it either moves or copies itself to another folder then deletes the original

    2) gives itself a randomly selected name in a randomly selected path from it's own list inside the 'C:\program files\common files\' directory. In my case it ended up as 'C:\program files\common files\oiFxAtf.exe'

    3) Sets the registry link with a random name to the path it sets itself to. In my case the keyname was '*GW'.

    4) It will not show up in the task list as it instead hooks into processes and not runs as the file itself which would show in the process lists.

So in essence it really isn't a rootkit at all but a process hook while hiding itself through renaming itself and changing directories each time it's run. It's easily removed through safemode and through any other unregistration method. Had it been a rootkit you wouldn't even be able to see it through safemode either I believe.

Intersting chozo but the sequence of events here was as follows :

I saw that file. I did execute it. It dissapeared from view but the search found it at the same place and no new exe appeared anywhere as far as I remember.

In the registry, it's startup vector remained ifN .exe at the same location. (not looked with Regedit but with a third party tool)

A new dll then appeared in the sys dir which is the wuhch1.dll hooked into explorer.

A bit later Jetico told me that ifN.exe wanted to go on the internet.

I'll need to rerun this in a virtual machine anyway.

If you can use the file search feature of Explorer to find it, it is hardly a rootkit in my mind.. Even if all it takes is starting in safe mode and then you can find it, not a rootkit.. If it just hides itself from taskman, so what.. I have seen proof of how easy this is too do.. Regardless... Never mind.. I dont care to explain this further..

  9. If you are afraid to download it, you may want to search yor machine for ifN.exe and wuhch1.dll to see if you are infected.

Note, if it is a real root-kit, you most likely wont find it in a file search unless you boot from a non-infected copy of Windows..

Otherwise, it appears to be old spyware/malware/virus (whatever your choice of words).. Google "iFN.exe" and there are things from early 2005 mentioning the file name..

    http://forums.techguy.org/security/338627-...y-trojan-2.html

Otherwise the comments on about Win9x and spyware are still partially right.. The worst I have seen in 98 wasnt able to hide from good old dos (which is a reboot and "F8" away).. For that matter, as far as hiding files from Windows, I have yet to see one go beyond the "hidden" file attribute in Win9X.. That isnt that bad compared to hiding it from the kernel in NT/2k/XP/2k3...

To each his own I guess.

BTW, does NOD32 really block the download or just download in the background and then scan it before giving you the chance to choose a place to save it?

Otherwise, my favorite for a while (Avast) catches both files in the zip file.

  10. I was thinking about this, but AFAIK, the Windows XP installer wont detect USB devices :(

Actually, yes it will.. Some things it can detect and see as drives.. Some USB floppy drives with the right motherboard and bios combination.. Not to get to specific, but I cant say it will work with all motherboard and drive combinations. I know for a fact it does work though.

  11. I use SYSTEM :D

For those that don't know, SYSTEM has even more power than Administrator.

You have to edit the SAM to make this work (found the instructions on some site I forgot...)

I know in the *nix world, they advise against using the 'root' account, but I don't really see it as a problem if the user is careful. Limited user accounts are for those who can't be careful.

SYSTEM is teh s**t.. Very useful when something wants to prohibit even Admin from doing something.. I dont use it all the time though, just when I need to by using a quick "at" command from the command prompt to get the Scheduler Service to run something for me..

Otherwise, I picked Admin.. If you want to play it safe and lower your permissions/rights for a program, use DropMyRights..

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/securec...ure11152004.asp

Kind of the reverse of logging in as a normal User and using Run As to run something as an Admin.. This just takes away some rights from a program if you are already logged in as an Admin.

  12. No I don't use roaming profiles.

As for the .default key I'm not sure what is happening. I suspect that it's not being used since it's on a domain and as such is drawing the information from the domain controller. But os far I've been unable to figure out exactly what I need to change on the DC.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\NTUSER.DAT

It is a registry hive file..

  13. Thank u guys u all great, thanks for takin of ur times to help me, i tried all but what really helps is the tool of Tarun and wow at avast, i thought Norton was the best, but not after today, Avast Leads ;) Ty so much Tarun

    Cheers All

    Peace

Dial-a-Fix is a sweet little combination of several common fixes..

And Avast.. :thumbup Yeah, much better then Norton/Symantec's retail products.. They are just to big of a target for viruses to attack..

  14. :( i am having problems keeping my connection to the internet. 2 weeks ago, my boyfriend called the router people (netgear) and had it configured to the factory settings. Ever since then i cannot stay connected to anywhere.

He put me on the same port that he was on and i still can not stay connected. This is intermittent. Doesnt matter where I go, I will lose it at some point. There is 4 computers and a play station hooked into this router and I am the only one having a problem

I play several poker sites and if i try to browse or go to my email, i will lose the connection to that site. Sometimes I lose my msn messenger and sometimes my yahoo messenger. If I am reading my email or doing surveys I have to refresh my page or hit submit several times before I can get to the next page. Most pages will just hang until I do this.

This is when i will lose my messenger. Sometimes I cannot even get to some of my poker sites, saying I dont have internet connection, but if I try on the other sites I connect. We called the router people again, and they said it wasnt in the router, that it was in the proxy settings and to get ahold of compaq and they would give us new settings, but compaq said there was no proxy settings.

    We have dsl.

    Any suggestions????????

    Wireless connection I assume?
