  1. Update 2025-02-08: Working with the GPT driver 8.0.1.0 included in Paragon Partition Manager 15 from Windows XP, I have completely filled a 6 Tb hard disk connected to SATA port in IDE mode and successfully verified that the data written to it is correct both from Windows XP and Windows Seven with the program "H2testw". +2 TiB via USB it is also possible but only works with Windows 2003 drivers and only if the adapter translates the logical sector from 512 to 4096 bytes. With these drivers you cannot exceed the 2^32 sector limit, so they are not suitable for SATA +2TiB without data corruption unless the ACHI/RAID driver allows it. I think that the issue of working correctly with GPT disks in Windows XP can be considered "solved", without prejudice to fixing problems that may arise regarding hardware compatibility and software tools. Subsequently, several users have corroborated these tests, and despite the fact that there are several drawbacks to take into account, if you follow the instructions GPT +2TiB works on XP, always at your own risk. This post is only intended to help those who want to do it. If you think it is a disaster to lose your data, you don't do it. The Paragon GPT driver generally only works in IDE mode. If you cannot enable IDE mode you can install a PCI Express card with SATA ports that has a switch to enable "IDE mode" or "no boot mode". Caution, you don't use other versions of Paragon GPT Loader, I have found that all of them are limited to the 32-bit sector limit (that is 2 TiB). You don't use the Paragon driver if you have Windows XP with PAE to go over the 4 GiB RAM limit, this causes data corruption on the GPT hard disks +2Tb working by SATA!!! Make a partition table copy because in certain circumstances partitions disappear just by opening Windows XP Disk Manager without performing any additional operations. The Paragon driver does not work with external hard disks connected via USB, in USB ports with hard disks until 16 Tb we can use Windows 2003 drivers with USB adapters that transfer the logical sector from 512 bytes to 4096 bytes. Although this is also possible with MBR disks +2TiB without the need to install any driver. The Windows 2003 driver version also limits the hard disks size in Windows XP to 2 TiB on SATA ports and by USB if the translation of the logical sectors to 4096 does not occur. You don't use the Windows 2003 drivers alone to work with hard drives connected to the SATA port, these can be installed together with the Paragon GPT Loader 8.0.1.0 Apparently, the 2 TiB limit affects both MBR and GPT (it's actually a limit of 2^32 sectors). Meanwhile, the 2 TiB limitation remains built into Windows XP with GPT hard disks. This limitation prevents the hard disks from working properly unless is installed the Paragon GPT Loader driver 8.0.1.0 contents at Paragon Partition Manager 15 Professional. This is the latest version available for Windows XP, it is a downgrade from the 10.0.5.95 driver as the latter is limited to 2 TiB hard disks on Windows XP and also contains BSOD errors when starting the boot from FAT32 partitions. At the moment it is not possible to properly install the driver 8.0.1.0 without running the program installer. However, in the installer you can choose to install only the driver. I have not yet tested how Paragon Partition Manager works when editing GPT partitions. Chkdsk does not work until Windows XP is booted. Also most software tools for editing hard disk partitions do not work on Windows XP with GPT hard disks. ¡¡¡Please use this with caution, protect your data or don't use it!!! I have noted that disk.sys must be extracted to work in XP and I don't remember what this means. Do you know information to read GPT disks in XP? I want to read a USB disk.

  2. Hello, it's Saxon, not Saxxon. I don't think they make them with 1tb platters, it would be a jet, too noisy, hot and vibrating. Those what they call "high capacity" are 2TB platters. About the controller chip, I'm not sure I read all, did he say his enclosure has one or two chips? Sorry, if I missed. There are two types of enclosures. The most "evil" are with two chips.

  3. Which makes me think it's simply too many outsourced platters with bad sectors. Why I think so? Hard disks contain equal sized platters, example, 6TB and 8TB have 3x2TB and 4x2TB. Old 3TB models (from 15 years ago) had 2x1.5TB or even 1x1.5 (as one disk, they had such disks. WD green, for example), so what platters they use in 5TB, if we are to consider your theory, jaclaz, I'm not saying you are wrong, I'm just curious. What I want to say, perhaps the limit is also in the controller, to make sure no one hacks the original HDD firmware to be able to use the full 6TB (real size).

  4. 5TB HDD is itself strange, looks like it's an outsorted 6TB, with a damaged platter, reduced to 5TB with its firmware. It's nothing new, it had been done before.

  5. I am experimenting with a new 6TB hard drive with GPT and all are problems in all operating systems (XP-Seven-10) 1- My four new Logilink USB adapters are limited with GPT partitions to 5TB (in MBR to 4TB). I have to use a single unit older than I have. 2- I initialize the GPT disk in XP with Acronis Disk Director 12.5 Lite and create 6 partitions (oh I want to try exFAT format and it doesn't have the option to format exFAT). Other programs do not support GPT on XP. 3- After several problems I format the USB hard drive with exFAT from MiniTool Partition Wizard 10.3 in Windows 10. Surprise, Windows 10 does not recognize the format. Ok, I format from Eassos DiskGenius and there is no problem. Windows 10 recognizes partitions. 4- I start Windows XP and it perfectly recognizes the USB hard drive partitions. 5- I disconnect the hard drive from USB and I connect it as SATA. So I boot XP and get blue screen on GPT_LO~1.SYS (ok, I'll check this later, I have Paragon Loader and Windows 2003 drivers installed at the same time). 6- So I boot Windows 10 and surprise, the hard drive system and partitions are not recognized by SATA Windows 10 a few minutes after recognizing it by USB. It looks like an MBR disk with a 2TB partition called GPT and a second RAW partition. I test on Windows 7 and neither, it looks like a raw disk without partitions. 7-Then I recreate the GPT hard disk by USB from the Windows 10 Disk Manager and format the 6 partitions from it. Then I reinsert it as SATA and the result is the same. WINDOWS SATA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE GPT HARD DRIVES that have been initialized and partitioned via USB. When I'm thinking, s***, this is amazing. So I initialize the GPT hard drive from SATA and partition it from SATA. Then I connect the hard drive via USB and surprise, more crap, Windows does not recognize the hard drive created from SATA via USB. This is a summary of many other problems that I have encountered and have taken away sleep hours. The most amazing thing is that GPT hard drives created by USB are not read by SATA and those created by SATA are not read by USB in both Windows 7 and Windows 10. So, will it be recognized, if I create it via USB and then change the brand of adapter,? What if I create by SATA and change the computer hard drive will it be recognized? Surely everything has a logical explanation, but the problem has not been one, but many. And most of the GPT applications have not worked well on Windows 10. Is there a dark hand that doesn't want us to use big hard drives to prevent us from having a lot of content? Other various problems that I had is that when a GPT partition worked with a program that does not work well in XP or Windows 10 was damaged, the files contained in the other partitions were affected until I corrected the defective partitions from Windows 10. 6. Ogg, webm and WMF disabled to make sure it was using the mp4 codecs and same result as 45.0. The video is there but the audio is distorted.

  7. Ah yes, the float32 issue. I recall that problem child from the VLC player days. Sometimes it would work and sometimes not and when it didn't it had the same distortion sound.
    1 point
  8. Thanks for confirming and I agree it is an ugly sound.
    1 point
  9. Thanks for this, wasn't aware of it, sorry. Yeah, I now tested it again on Firefox 45 ESR after putting the 3 files in its root folder, and setting the settings you mentioned, and wow.... indeed a very ugly sound distortion unfortunately appears. Happens on both IA32 & SSE builds.
    1 point
  10. If the codecs aren't there it's probably using webm vp9. I've tried with a fresh profile and it's the same result, the audio is distorted. You can get the codecs on the first page of this thread, Roy's got several links depending on the browser. This is the link to the ones I've been using with 45.0: https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/lav.7z You put the three files on the root firefox folder where firefox.exe is. You would also need to make sure "media.ogg.enabled" and "media.webm.enabled" are false while "media.mp4.enabled" is true.

  11. The SSE build, I didn't try the IA32 one. Are you experiencing it?

  12. Testing out today's new 45.0 version the mp4 codecs on youtube don't seem to be working right. At least the sound, the video is coming in but the sound is static. These are the codecs I'm using and were good in the April version: avcodec-lav-57.dll avresample-lav-3.dll avutil-lav-55.dll The solution for now is to disable mp4 and use ogg/webm vp9.

  13. And 12TB and up are 4TB, it seems. I even remember cutting those pins to remove all artificial blocks. Don't do it, if you're not sure! The second chip is usually the culprit. (not always). https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/c46men/problem_with_wd_my_book_enclosure_snipping_pins_7/

  14. Hi dimo70, if the selected boot partition is GPT, WinNTSetup automatically switch to UEFI only for bcdboot.exe. unless BCD option is set by ini or command line. This was requested years ago and actually makes sense. But if you use legacy boot with a GPT hybrid MBR, this causes promlems. Makes sure you set BCD option to "ALL".

  15. While the modern ntlite may not be the most convenient tool, people write it still can do this in Windows 10 LTSC 2019 but it's paid, not sure if it fits you. I can't give the link to the post because that site is known to store carcked software. Basically they wrote you need to go to: Components / Windows Apps / System Apps / Uncheck Windows Defender, hit Apply. Then need to go to Settings / Windows Defender / Open Windows Defender and Disable, hit Apply. There were multiple confirmations it worked in Windows 10 LTSC 2019.

  16. @feodor2 I do confirm I am able to use 2FA with GitHub without giving them my phone number! You can click on Settings->Password And Authentication, then click the *enable 2FA button*, you will see a three step process were you first must get a key from GitHub, it will show a QR-code but you can actually click to see the code, then you can save the code (16 characters long) to a text file then use the python script or another program (MOS Authenticator also works fine) to generate a temporary key from the master key GitHub gave you.. Your clock must be accurately synced with real time (a few seconds off max). because the generated code will change every 30 seconds. I tried this on two different account and it worked fine. Of course maybe it is different in different countries. I would suggest anyway to try on a test account that you can delete later, just in case something goes wrong. This is what I did. I am not sure if this will remove the random extra e-mail confirmation, but maybe not. I will have to see this over the next few days or weeks. I hope it will work for you as it would simplify your life.

  17. @RamonUn did you try already? I see you discuss the new github rule, but it was long before two password system there. They wont let me login untill i go to the email and take and enter the second password. And now they want us to use dedicated software program for this, what them displeased with email? So if it not possible to use it without the phone i shall drop it, because i never give it to such an evil companies, .

  18. Yep , OP (Cixert) knows very well how Seagate's enclosures may have issues: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183934-seagate-external-hard-drive-is-xp-incompatible/ but in your specific case that could be due to using a "proprietary" enclosure with another disk (i.e. the firmware of the Seagate enclosure might well have been "paired" to the original 5TB disk), the USB enclosures he is now using are "generic" and - at least in theory - should be compatible with *any* disk. And the even "stranger" thing is that - according to Cixert's experiences/reports - some limitations appear to be in the (new) firmware/hardware and not on older models from the same "generic" brand . I am calling the 5 TB as "strange" as it is not one of the more common (mathematical or from specifications) limits, the last one that I can remember is about the width of the emulated SCSI read and write commands in the USB layer, but that "jumps" from 32 bit (making the same 2.2 TB limit as other 32 bit related limits) to 64 bits, i.e. virtually unlimited: https://superuser.com/questions/308492/is-there-a-size-limit-on-external-usb-hard-drives This 5TB one seems more like an artificial cap (that could be explained on your Seagate enclosure) imposed by the "generic" manufacturer (or by the chip maker) for no apparent reason. Looking around on specs for USB external cases, I can find old ones with a 2 TB limit specified and some new ones with a (yet another) limit at 6 and another one at 8 TB (as well without AFAIK a math/spec reason for it), and even more setting the limit at 20 or 22 TB, most have no capacity limits explicited, . All in all it is a confusing mess. jaclaz

  19. Hello @Dave-H! I am currently testing this out. It is clear that a more up-to-date version of OpenSSL and Cryptography will almost certainly be accompanied by bug fixes or optimisations. In my tests so far, the proxy works great and fast. I'm already in the process of integrating it into my package. At the moment, however, there is no compelling need to change. ProxyMII as such is of course not as comfortable to use. When you call it up, it is not automatically entered in the system proxy settings of IE. All has to be done manually. The handling of the ProxyMII standalone version is described in detail in the section 8 and following of my main article.

  20. Hello to all interested users of ProxHTTPSProxy and a special hello to @cmalex! I have tested the brand new release of ProxyMII dated from 13.08.2023 for some days. And I am thrilled. It runs like clockwork. I have tested ProxyMII 230813 together with the browsers Internet Explorer 8, New Moon 28, Iceape and 360ChromePortable 13.5.1030 rebuild 7. So far no problems, on the contrary, the proxy is fast and runs great with my old SSE2 processor. FYI, @cmalex updated ProxyMII in terms of OpenSSL from 3.0.5 to 3.1.2 and Cryptography from 3.4.8 to 40.0.2 some days ago. However, this version now requires at least a processor with SSE2 instruction set and higher. More to come soon. In any case, a big thank you to @cmalex!

  23. So, what is the key where some USB adapters do not read MBR + 2 TB? What is the difference between one that reads it and another that does not? I have proven that it is not something physical in my adapter, it depends on the firmware version. New firmware = does not read MBR +2TB Old Firmware = OK And the 4 TB limit that I am experiencing in new adapters?

  24. The scan of the latest version obtained through its update function In any case, it does what it's supposed to, but the .exe indeed imports many functions, supposedly it uses some closed library for what it does and it uses some Windows' crypto store to store the data. It generates same codes as KeePass with default settings for TOTP, there's no extra configurable parameters and it seems you can't see the secret key anymore after you've stored it, which is mentioned in the FAQ. I don't have experience backing up the data that are in that Windows' crypto thingy, haven't needed to so far, looks to be very similar to Chrome which ties some profile data to the Windows user account, so normally not transferable. I guess it's up to the reader to decide.

  26. I'm not sure why you react this way, I was just trying to help Dave by answering his question! I don't even use this browser for several years, but I still have a working version of it. If @Dave-H wants it, I can share it, no problem, I'll send it to any junk/temp mail, if Dave gives me one, I don't ask/want/need Dave's real/good email. I just don't have any sharing website accounts to upload it.

  28. Just guessing will not help much. WinNTSetup already uses these 2 commands. bcdboot.exe W:\Windows /s S: /f ALL bootsect.exe /nt60 S: /mbr Were W: is the Windows installation drive and S: is the selected boot partition. Only difference I see is the missing /force switch on bootsect command. But this is done on purpose, also diskpart does write bootable MBR and PBR. If you encounter the problem again try 1 of these command from a WinPE, to find out witch one makes a bootable again.

  29. As a mathematician, I have to tell you that everything always depends on the definition. You can always bend definitions so that they fit or not.
    1 point
  30. That sounds like a problem with the MBR of the boot disk. By default WinNTSetup uses bootsect to update the boot sectors. bootsect.exe /nt60 S: /mbr The first 2 green lights are only using simple checks, there is no way to tell if the code is actually bootable. To limit the problem, it depends on what repair you do with bootice.

  31. There is no option. Disk index is a file property, thus it is saved inside the WIM file. Maybe, I can alter the attributes during apply. But has this disk indexing setting still any effect since Vista?

  32. How to edit GPT partitions from Windows XP In 2016 I tested the partition programs that work correctly with MBR disks larger than 2TB in Windows XP, ruling out the others. The ones that worked were the following: -Windows XP Disk Manager (partitions on AF hard disks are misaligned to sector 63). -Acronis Disk Director (partitions on AF hard disks are misaligned to sector 63). -EaseUS Partition Master. -Eassos DiskGenius -Macrorit Disk Partition Expert -MiniTool Partition Wizard (for partitions to be aligned on AF hard disks to sector 2048 they must be created with the align to MB option, not cylinder aligned) -Guiformat aka "Fat 32 Format" only for format large FAT32 partitions. In 2022 I have tested which of the above work correctly with GPT disks in Windows XP. In Windows 10 they all work but in Windows XP they don't. It only works correctly: -Windows XP Disk Manager* (partitions on AF hard disks are created misaligned to sector 63) -Acronis Disk Director 12.5.0.163 (year 2019) (partitions on AF hard disks are created misaligned to sector 63) -Guiformat aka "Fat 32 Format" with the same version number 1.0.1.0 as the previous version 1.0.1.0 but it measures 77,824 bytes instead of 73,728 bytes. http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.htm The following programs detect the GPT disk and its capacity but neither read the partitions nor allow them to work with the disk: -EaseUS Partition Master 16.8 (year 2022) -MiniTool Partition Wizard 12.5 (year 2021) In addition, the following program does not read the partitions but it does let you work with the disk, although it is possibly unable to complete the operations and leaves the disk defective: -Macrorit Disk Partition Expert 6.1.2 Pro (year 2022) The following program does detect the partitions, but when performing a disk operation it is unable to complete it and leaves the disk defective: -Eassos DiskGenius 5.4.6.1432 (year 2022) Therefore, only the following programs allow working with GPT partitions in Windows XP: -Windows XP Disk Manager. *Update: Before make a partition table copy because in certain circumstances partitions disappear just by opening Windows XP Disk Manager without performing any additional operations. -Acronis Disk Director 12.5.0.163 (year 2019) The problem with both is that you will get misaligned partitions on AF disks. Being able to work alternatively with any of the programs mentioned in this post in its WinPE boot disk version (I have not tried it). Regarding Paragon Partition Manager 15, contained in the installer that gives us GPT capability, I didn't have the best experience with MBR + 2 TiB on v.14 and earlier. I have done some small tests with v.15 on GPT and I didn't have the best experience either. For example, after creating the second partition without taking up all the disk space the rest of the disk space has disappeared. In case of problems you can reset the disk with Acronis Disk Director with the "Clean up disk" option which will leave the disk uninitialized. We can use Paragon Partition manager 15 without any apparent problems for simple operations such as changing the drive letter. PROCEDURE TO CONVERT MBR DISK TO GPT 1- With Acronis Disk Director 12.5.0.163 right click on the disk and press "Convert to GPT". The procedure is not reversible if there are more than 4 partitions. Note: If the hard disk is AF, it is best not to attempt the following operations from Windows XP as these will be misaligned. Use Windows Vista or higher or use a WinPE boot disk with one of the programs mentioned above. 2- To create the partitions you must also use Acronis Disk Director 12.5.0.163 or alternatively the Windows XP Disk Manager. Both programs give the same result, these set the first partition to sector 63 (misaligned on AF disks). You can try Paragon Partition Manager 15 to see if it works. The partitions should be aligned. 3- Format partitions with Acronis Disk Director 12.5.0.163 or with Paragon Partition Manager 15 or FAT32 with Guiformat aka "Fat 32 Format". 4- I don't know of any program with which you could align GPT partitions directly from Windows XP, so you would have to align them from another operating system or with a boot disk from one of the programs mentioned earlier in this post. PROCEDURE TO CONVERT GPT DISK TO MBR It requires disk erasing, although it could work without data loss if there are a maximum of 4 primary partitions and no extended ones. The best procedure to convert GPT to MBR and partition the disk is: 1- With Acronis Disk Director 12.5.0.163 convert the disk to MBR or use the "Clean up disk" option which will leave the disk uninitialized. The options are seen with a right click on the disk (not on the partitions). 2- Create MBR partitions with MiniTool Partition Wizard 10.3 with MB aligned partitions (not cylinder aligned) or use Eassos DiskGenius 5.4. 3- Format large NTFS partitions with MiniTool Partition Wizard 10.3 or Eassos DiskGenius 5.4 or if these are created in FAT32 with "guiformat.exe" aka Fat 32 Format. http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.htm 4- Align partitions with MiniTool Partition Wizard 10.3 (versions higher than 10.3 produce various problems when formatting partitions) Note: After aligning the partitions, I understand that there is no problem of losing extended partitions when using the Disk Manager of higher versions of Windows, even though they have been created from the Windows XP Disk Manager. If it could happen the other way around, that after aligning the partitions there are problems with the Windows XP Disk Manager.

  35. I've been looking at the matter thoroughly and from what it seems the latest Paragon GPT Loader driver that exists officially is 8.0.1.0 and contains many bugs. Yes, there is Paragon GPT Loader 10.5.0.95 but it is just a program that contains the 8.0.1.0 driver (long live the confusion, long live the marketing). There is also Paragon HFS for Win to read drives with MAC format and it also contains the GPT 8.0.1.0 driver In addition to the official version there is a fork that corrects the bugs. The current fork version is 8.0.1.2 On their website they do not give the full version 8.0.1.2 (although it exists on other websites). They only give legally the patches to correct the official version http://hardwarefetish.com/777-paragon-gpt-loader-3 (on this website there are only patches for 8.0.1.0, there is no full version)
