  9. I already abandoned them in a sense that I don't have practical use for computing on them anymore since Win10 runs everything that I need satisfactorily. Several years ago, somewhen mid previous decade, I abandoned Windows 2000 since I haven't had the use for the old accounting software I used to run on it. Looking at the files, it seems to be from 2003 and uses InterBase SQL Server version from 2001. I remember trying it on XP (definitely period-correct!), but the startup was noticeably delayed on that OS, so the program was never used on it. I ran it on an old very noisy Windows 98 machine initially (233 MHz Pentium, 2x 2GB SCSI disks) before migrating to the newer computer available, actually the one I'm writing from, inside a VirtualBox virtual machine. What a boost in responsiveness! On the old PC, even opening print preview took seconds to open while the disk was grinding. That program also has some weird licensing system from the era, but it didn't require online connectivity and the activation could be transferred from one computer to another using a floppy diskette. I guess I booted to XP more often when I still worked on the patches for some of the favorite old games of mine, mostly to address bugs and incompatibilities in (more) modern environments, to check if still works on the old OS. I mostly prefer native installs, especially for such fun stuff, virtual machines don't have proper graphics support. These days, maybe I check the browsers every once in a while on those OS. I won't bother with native installs of old OS when the day comes to replace this computer. I never even bothered with native install of Windows 2000 on this computer, which would maaaybe be workable, but not sure. Maybe virtual machine if I ever need something specific (not messing with web browsers). For several years, I've been seein' the message about corrected hardware error originating from AMD Northbridge in Event Viewer, happens after boot or resuming from hibernation. No idea when it even started. Who knows how long it'll work. I thought I bricked it shortly after installing the old PCI network card (brand SMC) I still have from the previous computer to try something several months ago, I was messing with FreeDOS before I realized my onboard Ethernet actually has a working driver for DOS and don't actually need that card. That and the on-board slowed down to 10MBps at the time, which I later realized was due to dust. Should probably clean the whole thing again this summer if not sooner. That network card, it seems to have stopped working shortly afterwards, few days being in the PC and made the PC looked bricked, the whole thing started to work again after removing it, otherwise, it was just fans spinning and blank screen. The corrected hardware error is persistent though, like the CHECK light in my previous 21,5 years old car, for which I never remembered/was reluctant to ask what it even indicates in that case and I didn't have any tool to read the error myself. The car ran with that light for several years. Almost everyone commented about how poor it is, having number of scratches, some rust, some peeled-off paint. I don't think most even knew the rust held for as long as it did and never cut through anything critical. So the metal was decent. It looked OK from the distance and the price of 0€ was not too bad so it got 5 more years of service from my family's side than it would otherwise. The person driving it (me) had the least complaints. The last year was apparently the year of upgrades, besides giving away my old car, we replaced the old freezing cabinet. It was over 37 years old, the people who might remember exact age are long dead. The pipe carrying the coldness was partially exposed since some of the material covering it degraded into nothingness and was all green on the sides, so not all parts of the cabinet were sufficiently cooled. My brother told me back then when I visited psychiatrist once that everyone has some issues that they need something in that department. I'm not sure if he also meant that the same everyone would need something pro-longed in that department. He still goes to that notorious psychiatric hospital for check-ups every once in a while. Notorious, might apply even more to the village where it resides, it's a habit of people around here, when you think someone is mental, you say he belongs to that "village name". Ex-classmate from high school lived there and I remember how another classmate asked him once like: "Bro, are you gonna go to Begunje?" He answered along the lines noooot yet, don't feel like it ATM. Of course both knew what the guy who asked was implying (jokingly). I was never there, not the hospital at least. So what, my mind still runs stable as hell?

  11. Home remedies for heartburn By: Juliane Gutmann ... The cause behind heartburn: When the stomach is severely stretched, the seal at the entrance to the stomach can temporarily loosen. As a result, air or stomach contents rise upwards. The acidic gastric juice irritates the mucous membranes of the esophagus, which triggers the typical heartburn symptoms. If gastric juice acts on the mucous membrane of the esophagus for a long time, it can become inflamed and painful, according to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care.... ... Home remedies for heartburn: still water, buttermilk, mustard or potatoes... Almonds, hazelnuts, cashew nuts, sunflower seeds: when chewed small, the nut pulp is said to be able to bind stomach acid. Potatoes, ripe bananas or whole grain products: These foods contain starch, which can bind excess stomach acid. Oatmeal: For heartburn, simply chew oatmeal or boil it with water or milk to make an oat porridge. The starchy grain can absorb excess stomach acid well and due to the high mucilage content, the flakes act as a protective shield for the mucous membranes.... 13. Rise in middle-aged white ‘deaths of despair’ may be fueled by loss of religion, new research paper argues On MarketWatch.com, Last Updated: Jan. 17, 2023 at 9:16 a.m. ET. By Steve Goldstein So-called deaths of despair such as from suicide or alcohol abuse have been skyrocketing for middle-aged white Americans. It’s been blamed on various phenomenon, including opioid abuse. But a new research paper finds a different culprit — declining religious practice. The working paper, from Tyler Giles of Wellesley College, Daniel Hungerman of the University of Notre Dame, and Tamar Oostrom of The Ohio State University, looked at the relationship between religiosity and mortality from deaths of despair. The paper was circulated by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The authors noted that many measures of religious adherence began to decline in the late 1980s. They find that the large decline in religious practice was driven by the group experiencing the subsequent increases in mortality: white middle-aged Americans without a college degree.... 14. @George King v8 must be x64/x32 update to fix SSDT race condition issue on multi-core CPU, but then i found w2003 .h headers mismatch. May be XP headers also mismatch, i don't know yet. So v8 will include .h patches, but it require much more time, unfortunately BINDIFF doesn't show difference in offsets, instead needs manual comparing source .h files with MS SP2/SP3 acpi.pdb decompiled. example of headers problem: W2003 RTM(leaked files): mov ecx, [eax+04] ; 04 - offset of YYY.XXX W2003 SP1(WRK): mov ecx, [eax+06] ; 06 - offset of YYY.XXX W2003 SP2(MS binary): mov ecx, [eax+08] ; 08 - offset of YYY.XXX YYY - kernel structure, XXX - field inside structure

  25. Just a short review for each. Swisscows is just a Bing front-end like DDG. Frogfind does partial searching on terms but does support quotes. Seems to be a good site for getting results on an older computer but the issue then is that it is delivering results that would not work for said older computers. Private.sh has the country sort that (like other sites that have it) does not work as you'd expect. It doesn't just search sites in that country which is something I'm really interested in but have yet to find. For example, if you search in Japanese and select the French Canada option, it will still show English language sites from the US in the results. Missing some countries like China, Taiwan, Philippenes, Ukraine, etc but since the country search doesn't actually filter by country it isn't that important I guess. Norton search has too many includes being used. Searching on there opens in a new tab and is using Ask (previously Ask Jeeves) and requires filtering many domains to let the site work. Too much effort. Metasearx has a file search but tries to connect to piratebay apparently. It times out and gives an error. The other non-web options are the same, on Images it hooks into Bing and Google. It is not searching full terms either, under Music, News and Science it is returning incorrect results for the term entered while General search had correct results. Search term used for testing: ぴーぶいせん (chosen because this does not yield proper results on Mercari or Yahoo Auctions Japan)

  31. If you can install something else, without a disk space error, then you do not need a patch. Have you googled to see if this is a common error? You could install the game using a VM with Windows. You would save your registry to a file, before install. Save it again after install. Then use Windiff to compare the two. The results can be saved to a .reg file, with REGEDIT 4 at the top of it. Copy the game files over, to the same location as on the VM. Then double click the .reg file.

  32. An Inspirational Quote From My Favorite Band (TwentyOnePilots) Let's take this energy, this focus, this emotion you feel that's obviously negative and let's try to take it and move it somewhere else. Let's kinda aim it at something else. And so I look at art, I look at music, I look at writing and lyrics, I look at a concert, I look at those as moments where people can take the things that they're struggling with and really kind of unleash the and pour them out onto this thing. That's helped me, a lot.-Tyler Joseph Hope This Helps Someone

  33. @win32, I hacked MK 11 and it works on Vista, absolutely marvellously with the 382.16 driver, min fps 60. Maybe you would be interested, if you have a DX11 card, even the lowest feauture_level 11.0 is fine. It downgrades itself with the hack from 12 to 11. Also, I solved the issue with that missing function in the kernel. P.S. Guys, I don't know about illegaly obtained copies though, so don't ask. My copy is legit.

  41. I saw three or four articles claiming that Google themselves suggest users to use a different browser instead of using their own browser with the --no-sandbox switch. BUT this doesn't really say much, in my opinion. Malware/Virus advocates basically make the same claim about running a computer without anti-malware/anti-virus. Yet I've not ran either, not even "on-demand" scans, in over 15+ years - and I have never been hit with malware or virus! It's about knowing what to click and what not to click, what web sites to trust and what web sites not to trust, when to allow javascript, when to block javascript, et cetera. I myself would use this switch IF my fonts disappeared as often as it seems to for others AND if the switch resulted in lower RAM (which was not the case when I measured on XP x64, but I only took one comparison instead of an average of several). I myself would NOT use the "Spectre mitigation" switch IF it did not result in Cloudflare capcha issues (because that switch does lower RAM).

  42. I found that there are ultimately four reasons why Chromium is broken on NT 6.x: 1. New imports in kernel32 and userenv. They can all be stubbed, not hard to fix. (Vista/7; 8.x has them) 2. Use of job object APIs in ways that are only supported on 8.x (without sandbox) and 10 (with sandbox) 3. Use of new NtQueryInformationProcess class for enumerating process handles; if it can't be used, the content process will be terminated (8.0 and below, sandbox only) 4. Use of new DirectWrite factories, like IDWriteFactory3, which was introduced in Windows 10 #1 is taken care of, I'm getting there with #2 and then I should be able to do #3. #4's solution is actually quite simple; copy over a Windows 10 DWrite.dll to use with Chromium using DLL redirection methods (I used 10.0.17763.1 and I think 10240 and up should work too). Then patch these DLL names in the import table with a hex editor or CFF explorer: api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll -> kernel32.dll api-ms-win-core-localization-l1-2-2.dll -> kernel32.dll This is sufficient to run the latest Chromium browser snapshot on Windows 8: Right now there are truly missing functions on Windows Vista and 7, in api-ms-win-core-delayload-l1-1-0.dll and api-ms-win-core-delayload-l1-1-1.dll. Some of those return function pointers so they can't be stubbed.

  43. Yeah, those patches and pushing RAM to the limit, possibly also a bunch of folks running without the page file in-between. BTW, @Dave-H's stack trace mentions fonts and it just occurred to me that I need to run the browser with --no-sandbox, otherwise, the text disappears from the pages after relatively short period of time. It's interesting this isn't mentioned more often. Whether this flag also reduces the possibility of BSOD is anyone's guess. And who knows about effectiveness of sandbox on that OS. I don't need that parameter on Vista.
