  1. I really have no one outside my family to talk to, sometimes I talk co-workers at work, but no genuine contacts on the outside anymore. Though even if you do have someone, sometimes there's just nothing to say. I relate, it'd be nice, theoretically at least. It would also probably be easier if you managed to get interested in all sorts of random stuff. There was this guy, we used to chat every day. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE for someone like me, but with this person, it somehow worked out. Several years later and I've got a hunch he doesn't want anything to do with me anymore. This is almost the only forum I ever participated in that has concept of likes. I tend to do it when I'm in the right mood, my not reacting is not something to take personally. Believe me, I have exactly this same feeling as you. Hey at least Simon Cowell doesn't hang around to judge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM7ZiSdR6CA I'll take "useless" people over those with over-inflated egos any day. Talking about computers and knowing more about them. That's what I mainly like to do. I just remembered a class mate from the first years of elementary school saying to me once: "I thought your only friend was a computer." Oh my, that was before even YouTube was a thing. I wasn't exposed to much else in my younger days, some ball games with some kids occasionally and my family wasn't much into board games. Me and my brother play catan once in a blue moon and we go play a mini-golf once or twice a year. Wish we went a bit more often. Seems there's always something to occupy/waste time with on computer... And they're everywhere! Recently realized I bought a computer on wheels, my car's infotainment system is actually a full-blown little computer running Linux under the hood. The predecessor of two decades ago had a plain FM radio there, though simpler controllers (or control modules) for certain things was already a thing back then in cars.

  2. Sad news for everyone here at MSFN. One of our forum supervisors, Dencorso, passed away on October 24th, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Apparently he was still upbeat and optimistic about the future a few weeks before he passed. My memories of Den go back quite a few years. He was incredibly helpful to me with technical problems, which is what this board is all about of course, initially mainly with Windows 98, and latterly with Windows XP. He was immensely supportive too when I first became a moderator here, something I will always be grateful for. He was definitely one of the good guys, and will be sorely missed here. Please add your memories here of working with Den. Thanks, Dave.

  7. Right, has to be different vibe compared to some small company. The place I work is a bit too relaxed. But it works with the right people. No, it doesn't. I could be wrong though. Chrome's built-in translating is neat IMO, at least as long as you're happy with their service. BTW, websites can have the directive in their HTML that prevents the translator from automatically kicking in (it's enabled by default on stock Chrome). https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12238396/how-to-disable-google-translate-from-html-in-chrome

  10. Thank you for your advice. Yeah, I'd be Eaten alive on some forums. Yeah, mind does wonder some times, I don't know. Glad this weekend is going well.

  11. Not for the most part. The "problem" arises due to IT Departments on three continents. All three get "automatic notifications" if any computer on the network pings any blacklisted domain. It is only then that one of those continents in particular will raise holy h#ll if it was open source software (such as Chrome, Chromium, or Firefox) that pinged the black list.

  12. thanks. I just downloaded them. I will give it a try once I complete the test box.

  13. I think it's because there isn't anything I have to do right away when I wake up and the mind starts to wander. At least this weekend is going well. I wish you don't have to experience something like that ever again. I don't think any of us who haven't gone through it can even imagine it. FWIW, it's in the past and you're still here. My mind does wander in similar direction at times, eg. a natural disaster could turn it all upside down. No worries. Speaking of missing stuff, from my POV at least, this has to be one of few forums where it's somewhat possible to keep up. Well, it still accumulates if you don't visit for few days, but this happens so much faster in other places.

  14. Oh, and funny story on YouTube for at work. Engineering Department. And it's an HR rule that any audio be played on headphones and never on computer/laptop speakers. The ads "in the middle" of YouTube videos are somehow blocked by the company server, but YouTube still plays "silence" that cannot be fast-forwarded for the duration of that "in the middle" ad. But the ads BEFORE or AFTER a video are not blocked by the company server. We are forced to use Edge at work (company is international and you will have your computer locked if you put ANYTHING on the computer that is "open source", we've had people FIRED for using "open source" software!). And our extensions have to be approved by IT Departments on three different continents. I got "Enhancer for YouTube" approved because it blocks ads before and after videos for feminine hygiene, razors, bras, and panties and it wasn't difficult to convince IT Departments that we should block them "in a corporate environment", lol. edit - they used to block YouTube entirely, but they found it forced them to loosen restriction on USB Ports so that we could listen to music that way instead.

  15. Yep. One of my favorites! I couldn't get through an 8hr day without it, lol. The other YouTube extension I use extends ad-blocking to "annotations" - which I can't say for 100% if I still need that one or not. edit - confirmed, still need the annotation-blocker also.

  16. I use Enhancer for YouTube, it's a great extension. Be aware though that version 2.0.115 is the last version that will work on 360Chrome. I think the later ones need a later version of Chromium. I've attached it here, see if it works for you. FWIW YouTube works fine for me, with uBlock Origin I never see an advertisement! 17. Under Windows XP you can use alternative file explorer that have decent support for long file path. I suggest you have a look at DoubleCommander (open source clone of Total Commander). for Windows XP+ https://doublecmd.sourceforge.io/ Note that when a file name becomes too long you may no longer have the context menu because shell32.dll si responsible for this one. You can however still copy/move/rename files when they go beyond the limit. Also if you prefer the command line you should use Yori http://www.malsmith.net/yori/ Yori is a replacement for cmd.exe and supports long path names even under NT3.5. Yori works even on Windows NT3.1 Keep in mind that when you copy files under Linux, ntfs3g does not generate short names and you have to regenerate them manually. I wrote a simple (ssname.exe) program to do it automatically https://github.com/RamonUnch/ssname I was always shocked that the explorer did not handle long path names when it has been possible on Windows NT since 1993.

  20. Is that the Max_Path issue? You should be able to access the file via the \\?\ syntax, but it has to be tried, as any tool may (or may not) support this alternate notation: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/fileio/maximum-file-path-limitation But Long Path Fixer should be able to see those files, maybe there is some other issue involved? The "traditional" way was to use subst to assign temporarily a drive letter to a "deep" folder: https://support.code42.com/Incydr/Agent/Troubleshooting/Windows_file_paths_longer_than_255_characters jaclaz

  22. No, you're quite right, it wouldn't be there unless the policy is specifically applied, and Ungoogled has no reason to follow Google-branch policies. I thought maybe they have their own policies under a different key, but it's not too surprising if they don't.

  23. In my MinWin profile, by default, all files are deleted from the folder \Windows\PolicyDefinitions\ru-RU\ What should be done so that the files from the folder are not deleted? Tried in Windows.txt !\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\ru-RU\ But the folder is empty, these files are needed for gpedit.msc. Thank you.

  24. Plus, I also think that v13.5 is basically "end of the line" for 360Chrome on XP. I hear rumors of another Chrome Fork in the works that would dethrone 360Chrome if the rumors are true. Waiting to see. https://msfn.org/board/topic/184127-xp-and-future-of-web-browsing/?do=findComment&comment=1230273 edit - truth be told, 360Chrome could come out with twenty "newer builds" for v13.5, but if a web site that does NOT work in build 2022 isn't PROVEN to work on the "newer build", then I will not upgrade from build 2022. I'm not looking to be the dog chasing its tail with constant "updates".

  37. Yeah, I used to be out at night in the 90's and now in bed at 10PM and I'm SO VERY happy that its quiet here today. Seems like a lifetime ago and I was fearless but also oblivious and too open to wearing my 'heart of my sleeve' and people took the (full) opertunity to pull the 'wool over my eyes' .. but that was then. Here and now - Today. One day at a time now. Will write more a bit later but happy to see that everyone here at the forum seem to be in good spirit and this makes me happy. I know its hard for others out there when families are struggling to get by and I think of them and am grateful and mindful of how much wore it could be. 'There but for the grace of God, go I'

  40. Yes, @mina7601, you are a really exceptional person, polite and helpful always! I don't have a very good opinion of today's youth, but you are commendable, honorable exception. I understand you perfectly, when you avoid colleagues who have bad manners. I did the same thing at your age. I understand that it is difficult to find colleagues (or girls) of your level...but look for them!

  42. You already know my point of view in terms of Russia or unwanted, hidden connectoins to whatever. I avoid connections to many countries if possible. Especially, if I need privacy, anonymity and security! OpenVPN has a huge impact on the CPU, but in the case you are equipped with a powerful CPU, it's no problem at all. In my Windows XP system works a single core CPU from 2000, and OpenVPN is not really a good choice. But it works! The native protocols of Winfows XP work much better and have a very small impact on the CPU. Simply great if still supported by a VPN service.

  43. I know, I even admitted that the 2nd reason is a really stupid reason for me to feel sad, but me not having people to talk with is really sad (what I am actually trying to say is, I hope people (and moderators as well) are fine with my behavior/posts here generally in this forum [a.k.a., not annoyed by my behavior]). You are trying to say, I should not mind it that much? But thankfully, I have you, msfntor, D.Draker, and a few others to talk with here.
