  1. You mean this fake/scam browser "brave" ? "Despite explicitly opting out of telemetry, every few secs a request to: “variations.brave.com”, “laptop-updates.brave.com” which despite its name isn’t just for updates and fetches affiliates for brave rewards, with pings such as grammarly, softonic, uphold e.g. Despite again explicitly opting out of brave rewards. There’s also “static1.brave.com” https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/nxce6t/brave_browser_scam_a_fake_privacy_browser_sharing/ That's "why".

  2. When they tell you something, it's actually not what they name it . Here, let me help you with translation : Epic Privacy Browser = Epic Privacy Failure Browser. Besides , it can't use extensions , so a hard pass for me. How am I supposed to use a browser that doen't allow extensions , it's just nonsense . What about no-script and the such ?

  3. I said out of so called privacy options it is worst. Did I mention Chrome or Edge as alternatives? No. Many fall for Brave after Firefox thinking it is more private and secure and close their ears from facts. You choose trust some other evil than before but wont get rid of the evil. Few interesting facts like here that may also interest @Dixel https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/brave.html here was some analysis from Brave on it default settings. http://tilde.club/~acz/shadow_wiki/browsers.xhtml#Brave here some more and if I did not prove enough here is last nail to coffin related to your comment You need account on uphold which privacy policy states that is same level of surveillance as Facebook for me. That is not anonymous or privacy respecting at all. If they did not do payment system to respect privacy can you trust anything else they say. take everything on internet with grain of salt even my sayings. My sayings are based on my and others research. I compare my test results to ones mentioned on websites. I do them on lab network with MITMproxy. And I can say Brave is as evil or even more evil than Mozilla. It is shilled everywhere for and they usually defend it with "Mozilla does bad things too". If someone does bad things it does not justify others to do bad things. If someone else steal car am I allowed steal one too? No. Brave, Mozilla Firefox, Protonmail etc. are mostly aimed for privacy normies so they can think they are on super secure platform that respect their privacy. Once you evolve with your technican knowledge you understand there is no such as privacy respecting provider. All that say so are liars. You wont trust any provider to handle your private stuff. First one I never heard about but that name suggest it is not private at all. Well I need fire up my lab again. GNU icecat is okayish but I rather recommend librewolf. Only thing it adds is libreJS that can also be downloaded other browsers. And librejs is pretty useless for privacy actually as it only cares from javascript licence and not what JS does in your system. Iridium got one problem that developers wont address and that is google safebrowsing https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/iridium.html That still exist on latest version of iridium. Why safe browsing is issue? Since browser needs to connect on Google servers to download file and that means excess connection. Also developers refuse to address issue saying "it only downloads them for local use". Safebrowsing always been obsolete since malware sites got so many domains ready. Once safebrowsing blocks one they add another. Vivaldi is huge red flag too. Here some more sauce to support my findings https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/vivaldi.html It sends telemetry that includes your profile unique ID, screen resolution and your IP. That is same fingerprinting as other violators. Also their developers don't care about user concerns. And forget about building it from source since there is no full source code that makes it not to be open source. So what browsers I should use? If you really need to use big browser use either Ungoogled Chromium or Librewolf (Firefox based). If you want something else UXP browsers like Palememe and and Basilik based browsers are great alternatives. Though vanilla versions have started limit user control but many forks still respect. And do not fall for built in privacy protections scam. Remember that developers whitelist trackers many times from built in protections. Use your own set of privacy addons like Umatrix/Ematrix, Decentraleye, Nocript, Ublock origin that gives you much better privacy. I welcome any actually privacy respecting browsers to be listed at end of first post. We need to give them that alternative I told to go for. And it does not have to be for "latest and (not so) greatest" OS. Lets take example from ff52 that is latest on XP and Vista with offical support. It got plenty of telemetry built in already like you know. And yes I know Windows phones home but I mitigated most of it on my personal rig and it is not as bad as with windows 10 or 11. Palememe based browsers are way better alternative or go minimal like Netsurf. I asked your opinion for other legacy supporting that non spyware browsers since you got experience with Chromium under older Windows versions.

  4. Yeah I know that title is not best in the world, but could not get better one into my head. And now it may feel bit clickbait too This board has not have yet any topics about Mozilla/Firefox problems and I decided to make one. This topic purpose is not to shill some firefox alternative like brave or say anything based on gecko engine is bad rather address real problems related Mozilla corporation. I used to be huge firefox fan but lot been going wrong since it. lets start with first and biggest one which is false claims. Mozilla is not people first not profit like they claim. Mozilla foundation sure exist but behind it is mozilla corporation that does profit with marketing deals and also they laid off 250 developers around same time when Mozilla ceo took himself nice paycheck (someone look article from that since was not able find it on quick search anymore). Also Mozilla pretends to be against Google and care from you privacy BUT website privacy policy says against it. so they implemented google invisible recaptcha and google and yahoo trackers on their site. That is caring from privacy right? Also firefox uses google as default search engine Now lets move to browser itself. I wont put tons of stuff here but if someone wants read more Spyware watchdog got good article about it. First issue is Firefox uses google analytics on browser (source) and developers ignored that saying they wont use it for datamining. Sure I trust google about not doing it. Then there is pocket feature which according privacy policy does allow insert personalised ads into stories saved to pocket. Also you need firefox account to use it. Then there is Google safebrowsing which make browser to download address database from Google servers. I explained on other thread why that feature is useless in real life and is only privacy threat. Also Firefox advertises addons during browsing by default By default Mozilla collects telemetry from following I think there is enough from Mozilla privacy issues and time to move for other issues. First one is addon blocking which Mozilla admit they wont care from your choice and want "protect" you https://extensionworkshop.com/documentation/publish/add-ons-blocking-process/ Then there was dropping XUL addons in favor of Webextensions. Problem with webextensions is they are way more limited than XUL addons were. Take example from Classic theme restorer developer if wont believe my word on it again they want limit what you can do and are ready to ignore what users want. Then there is issues related UI changes. Mozilla has been renewing firefox UI multiple times without giving option to go back old look. I absolutely hate new Bloatfox theme. It takes too much screen space for no good reason and removal of most icons on menu makes it harder to navigate. Before you were able to fix it but Mozilla killed XUL addons so not anymore Sure someone will pull you can disable them but why bother fixing something that turns more spyware on every update? Some alternatives I would recommend: Palemoon based browsers. I cannot recommend using vanilla Palemoon for multiple reasons that most here likely know but codebase of browser is solid and Newmoon/Mypal on Windows and webbrowser on linux. Those are best if you need lightweight browser without webrtc or other. Those forks also runs down to vanilla Windows XP Also Basilik is pretty good browser. I recommend disable addon blocklist on both of those If you really want to use latest Firefox based browser: Librewolf which is firefox with telemetry and propieraty blobs removed. Problem with that is they are depent on Mozilla and code grows all the time so it will be uphill battle If you want to use latest Chromium based browser Ungoogled Chromium which removes Google stuff from Chromium. That like librewolf is they are in uphill battle If you want to use chromium on XP: I cannot say anything here since only used goanna based browsers so @ArcticFoxieand @Dixel who got experience can help me out with this one Honorable Mention: Seamonkey I have been using that for while on linux to see how good it is and have to say it is very decent browser and not done by paid Mozilla Employees. It UI makes sense, support classic addons and theming. If you plan use it please follow mitigation guide for maxium privacy. That is way better than firefox on default options, but I recommend still do tweaks Browsers I cannot recommend at all. Waterfox: While it claims to support your privacy it spies on you as much or more as firefox and if that wont convince you it was sold to advertising company Brave: That gotta be absolutely worst out of all options analysis. It has fake cryptocurrency system that needs personal information, it got lot of telemetry, it offers it own "privacy respecting ad platform" which injects ads into webpage. Also it is shilled way too often and you should NEVER trust shilled products. If you want secure and private pick one that does actually well pick one that is as minimal as can and select your own addon set (tampermonkey, umatrix, ublock origin, noscript, decentraliseye) and you got pretty good setup Please add any findings or alternatives I missed

  5. sorry just could not resist to edit it like that. "This completely false sectence has been corrected by Mozilla thinkright technology" That is what many actually think from telemetry. Also it is not needed even to improve product. You can ask feedback on project forum or anywhere else. I need give those shot on my lab before can recommend. Though I pretty much trust your word over this I want do my own testing always. do you have umatrix or ematrix? You need add following rules after that is should redirect. By default it conflicts with uMatrix.

  6. that plus quick look to their site gave me good enough conclusion. Their site looks like obvious scam site all badges and others and what is funny isin't ability to choose addons freedom too?

  7. Are we going on the personal anecdata route? That disk had a number of bad sectors (all concentrated in a same area), which I believe is a sign of a "head crash", what I did when I salvaged it was to simply find out the area where bad sectors were concentrated and exclude it (+some small area before and after it) from the partitioning, making a volume just before it and an extended partition starting just after it. jaclaz

  8. @Vistapocalypse Yes, it was an update that updated the kernel to 6003 , you're right ! It was yet another version of that bloody "supposed-to-fix" hasswell fake news nonsense. There are several of them. I was experimenting , even though it was a non-haswell machine. If you want to know the name , here goes . Stack update , there was no need for it . It installed just fine without it and didn't ask for it . May 14, 2019—KB4499149 (Monthly Rollup)

  9. well I used to use 15GB quantum fireball LCT hdd that had plenty of bad sectors. I had to reinstall Windows many times whenever bad blocks were on same as Windows system files and hosed up. But it still chuigged along over 5 years I connected that hard drive and it had 25 sectors marked as bad and not remappable. LCT stands for low cost technology for reason and back in day bad sectors on drive were normal, this drive however had problem where controller overheated so much it turned into red . I saw that on friend once and though they were cold cathodes or led fan that was glowing

  10. No , they don't . Please , try yourself. First off , they will whine about "locale not found" , but even if you'll able to install , they will pretend they work when the actually don't. Also , most are auto-switched OFF after you restart your browser. Let's say you try any well-known ad-blocker .

  11. @XPerceniol Did you manage to do a full scan? How many problem sectors were found? The SMART values show just one sector, but this is what the drive is aware of. There may be a ton more, or none at all...

  12. twitter creates 1500+ events per tab nowadays, that's the reason UXP browsers having hard time when browsing twitter.

  13. Well, that's the question, isn't it? The OP has one bad sector on his HDD. Is that just a fluke, or the start of HDD failure? No way to know at this point. I'd advise regular backups (which should be done anyway, but if the OP has been putting them off, now's the time to start) and check the SMART stats periodically too. If you see another bad sector show up soon, grab a replacement HDD or SSD, swap them out, and restore the latest backup. But if it just stays at one measly bad sector for the next several months, probably nothing to worry about.

  15. Hey! But hard drives have fallen out of fashion, haven't they? Nobody wants to use them anymore, because they perform slower than SSDs. Obviously Windows 10 might be too much with a standard HDD, at least those were the rumours. If there is one piece of tech that should be easily accessable, it should be classical hard drives. Let it be 10 years old and only have 100 GB (maybe a smaller sized notebook hard drive). You'll never use the whole space if you're not a pro-gamer, playing current games with 10 GB of patches every week, or if you're mining the Chia coin, or building up a video archive. Finding hard drives is easy. Pick up a broken laptop or have a look inside a A3 photo copier. I wouldn't continue to work with a hard drive that starts failing and has bad sectors. That's the beginning of the end of that drive. Same goes for USB sticks or floppy disks. Coming back to the title of this thread: What change (in terms of hard drives)? The only constant are my 20 year old Seagate hard drives, the one with a fish drawn onto it. That must be one of the reliable Seagate models. I've stuffed these computers three times in a moving van, travelled across the country, and these 30 GB hard drives are still in operation. Hopefully they'll do another decade.

  20. Well win32 said August 27, 2020 back on page 2 that he was “working on a Haswell+-specific issue, which is completely unrelated to the Ryzen problems.” I may have “overreacted” a bit to your post, but I awoke in a generous mood.

  21. Just how do these spammers/bots create an account and how do they decide which threads to spam? Can't be random when this robot hit this thread twice. I'm certainly not going to fall for it and no way in Hades am I going to click on his d@mn estub httpS links. Though I do admit that I am curious if the "padlock" is GREEN on his d@mn estub "secure" links.

  22. Someone living in Eastern Europe can only tremble watching phenomenons, known from the times of communist takeover, creep back into mainstream politics. The restriction of open debate , but most importantly the restriction of the right to participate in a debate.

  24. It really all boils down to USER PREFERENCE. There is no such thing as a "best browser". Operating system plays a role. Available RAM plays a role. Can the same browser be used on six different computers running different operating systems and different RAM and clock spec's all play a role. Browser A will always perform best on web site U, V, and W. Browser B will always perform best on web site X, Y, and Z. Browser C will always have a GUI more intuitive and ergonomic than Browser D. Browser E will always handle RAM better than Browser F. Browser G will have a wider range of available extensions than Browser H. et cetera... It all boils down to USER PREFERENCE, what balance best fits the USER.
