  1. ntoskrnl cannot be easily wrapped. Thus, I will only be able to provide one patched version of it. And another note, NVIDIA drivers after 372 fail to initialize if version 6.0 is detected and send the NTSTATUS REQUEST_NOT_SUPPORTED. NVIDIA had no problem providing barely-documented Windows 2000 support until late 2010 yet they have shifted to blocking operating systems, even those that are technically capable of using the drivers (Windows 8.1 with RTX 3xxx, early Windows 10 builds and soon Vista).

  2. funny that it offers left and middle only and they all are forced to centre until activation of Windows. I guess OS begging, nagging and showing watermark did not make peoples activate Windows so now they force taskbar to wrong place by default to force peoples pick buying licence or losing productivity

  3. I know a method about installing Office 2019: As for the updates, you even said that Office 365 is compatible and supported, so, the updates should install normally, and it shouldn't stop at a specific version on Windows 8.1.

  4. I hesitated to make this thread, but ultimately think the issue separate enough from the Latest Version of Software Running on XP thread (and the various Steam threads left hanging from recent history) to warrant a thread of its own since the Latest Version thread is mostly focused on productivity software and because I hate waiting half an hour downloading a game only to find that it doesn't even work. Steam lost XP support in 2019. Since then, multiple solutions have come up with varying levels of success. After trying 2 other avenues, I used the method described in this video to install Steam on XP because, while it's uncomfortably unfamiliar (they say this Steam rebuild has multiple patches, but only name one of them), it's the only way I got games to download in-client. Another method from December 2020 in the comments of this post claimed to do the same, but it didn't work for me, though this may have been because of an error I made midway. Anyways, this isn't for discussing Steam compatibility as much as it is for Steam game compatibility. Some games on XP claim to be compatible (or at least logically should be compatible) but aren't for a variety of reasons. Some games even used to be XP-compatible, but have somehow lost this after newer updates that, due to the nature of Steam, are entirely unavoidable. With this thread, I aim to create a more uniform list of what is and isn't working on XP in 2021 and beyond. So far, this is what I've found: SteamVR is not compatible. Attempts to install will only restart Steam. For all hl2-era games, your game may render itself sideways for some reason. If this happens, change your video setting to the lowest possible setting on 4:3 mode, then change it back to the resolution and aspect ratio you prefer to play at. Closing the notification you get about screen resolution from Windows is fruitless, since it comes back instantly. Attempts to change your in-game volume settings will not last after closing the game. Team Fortress 2 is not functionally compatible. The game will run, but it doesn't connect to Steam, so you lose your overlay, your inventory, the store, and really everything in the game that isn't the main menu. Starting your own server ingame crashes before reaching the team choice screen. I'm going to try one last thing (getting a Steam invite and trying to join the game through that), but otherwise I don't know of any way to make it work that wouldn't require modifications. I guess if you wanted to take the commentary tour, you could try that? Garry's Mod is not functionally compatible. After it flips your screen sideways, it gives you a bug warning in a standard MessageBox window about how to report bugs to the team. I may try some testing later with the facepunch common issues guide, but will wait on confirming things with TF2 first. Half-Life is fully compatible, even online multiplayer. Half-Life 2 is fully compatible. Portal 2, afaik, is fully compatible. Poker Night at the Inventory is fully compatible, though I don't know if it gives TF2 items due to aforementioned issues. Even though Steam overlay doesn't work with this game, you will still get achievements. Audiosurf is fully compatible, though I haven't tested the login feature. Crazy Taxi is fully compatible. Lethal League is not functionally compatible. You can hear game audio and control the menu, but the game will only display a series of scattered pixels that don't move. I haven't tested to see if resolution adjustments or menu choices will remedy this. Ultimate Custom Night, in a strange twist of fate, is fully compatible despite being released in 2018. I have other games I could test, but those are all I've covered for now. If anyone has anything else to test, or weird workarounds that could fix any incompatibility with the above, do share. Also, a game that only works when cracked doesn't count as a compatible game. You're aiming for things you can download legally with the Steam client, and nothing else.

  6. Hey! I was wondering if it is possible to install Office 2019 (with working updates) on Windows 8.1. I know that it MUST be compatible with 8.1, as Office 365 is compatible as well. I already tried my best with Windows 7 and Office 2019, however Windows 7 obviously doesnt support updates anymore since v2002.

  10. I'm here because there was an unpleasant situation with Mypal. The repository was removed from GH together with contributions almost two hundred users, including me. Some people decided to interpret the MPL 2.0 to bring paragraph 5.1. Free Software Foundation, Inc. (Mozilla recommends their articles) reports:

  14. @cmccaff1 To come back to the question about search engine extensions... Actually, why do people need extra extensions for their search engines? Isn't the Opensearch standard a good solution? That way, you can even add current search engines to the old Netscape browser of 2008. Startpage and Duckduckgo support it, Mojeek too and many more sites. To look for an Opensearch plugin, have a look at the search bar (at the upper right corner of the old Firefox compatible browsers). The second-to-last item is "Add", if there is an Opensearch plugin available. That works in Pale Moon too. But! For some sites, you have to check for the Opensearch plugin at their home page. For some sites, you have to do a search and check for the plugin afterwards.

  15. Too much tinkering with settings for me, I use AdBlock on all 360 versions. BTW, I can't get a satisfying result on youtube with any of the 360 versions published here. Same bad results with New Moon28, Serpent52/55 and Mypal. More or less stuttering with all of them. Mypal/New Moon28 with RealityRipple's extension uTube for Pale Moon is almost OK but a little bit strange... it acts a bit funny when you click a link to or on youtube. "This extension redirects video and playlist pages on YouTube to their embedded versions." https://realityripple.com/Software/Mozilla-Extensions/uTube/ https://realityripple.com/Software/Mozilla-Extensions/?br=Pale Moon What's really strange is that roytam1's K-Meleon 76.4.4 - Goanna 3.5.0 (Build 20210828) plays ok right out of the box in mobile mode, no addons, no nothing extra. A bit slow in desktop mode but no audio/video stuttering. BTW2, thank you for your hard work, 12.0.1247_rebuild2 is now my main browser for everything except for youtube. Also a big THANK YOU to roytam1, feodor2 and "the Owl". You all saved an old Thinkpad from its last journey to the rubbish dump. .

  16. I usually disable windows defender using Defender Control app and I run Win10 LTSC 2019 which get updates (excluding feature updates) & support until Jan. 2029 very rarely have problems with using the Win10 LTSB/LTSC editions and are stable

  17. Work continues on the Vista extended kernel. With the next release, you will be able to spoof version numbers on-demand, for either a specific application or the entire system. The values will be set in osver.ini in the Windows folder. Because I had difficulty accessing high-performance, Vista-compatible hardware for the past few months, I was initially forced to test it on NT4.

  18. Wow! Am I dreaming?! Vista Extended Kernel is a reality?! Thank you, @win32 for putting work into this project and bringing it to fruition, and creating this tutorial. This is something that has been discussed & yearned for among those of us "old-timers" in the Vista community as early back as 2013/2014, and the closest thing we ever got was @smeezekitty's proxy stub DLL wrappers for Adobe Reader DC & Catalyst Omega, but unfortunately he has been inactive since 2016 I never thought anyone would ever come forward with a full-blown extended kernel project. This is very exciting & promising as I had planned to stick with Windows Vista indefinitely, but worried for the future as software support (namely browsers) has continued to diminish. I'm not much experienced with any kind of coding, but if I can be of help in any way, do let me know. I apologize to everyone here in the Vista community for being so inactive lately. Being an "essential" employee (letter carrier for USPS) during a pandemic is not easy! Package volume is through the roof since no one (understandably) wants to get out Hope everyone here is staying safe.

  19. I made a custom Windows Vista Image called Windows Vienna (Named after Windows 7's codename) I gave it it's own kind of look anyway i'm kinda off topic. I used a program called gimagex which is very useful. all you have to do is extract install.wim from the .ISO file and mount it but be sure to select the 'read and write' check box. you can directly replace the modified kernel32.dll file in the Windows directory without any permission issues. once done, check 'commit changes' and then select unmount. here's what i achieved whith gimagex: this took me 2 years to develop btw.
