  1. @Drugwash I echo what @Goodmaneuver said, please find help. I've been to your country many times, and while I know very well that it's hard for many people in Romania, it's not a third world country, and nobody should be "starving" there in the 21st century. If there is anything we can do to help, even just helping you to pay your electricity bill, please don't be afraid to say. This is a community of friends, even though we will never physically meet, and to find a fellow member in such a position is very saddening. Cheers, Dave.

  2. Agreed! I boycott Facebook but people that are ADDICTED to it "don't care" that Facebook knows more about them then their own MOTHER knows about them. I'm aware of the history and Firefox is doing something similar, don't know the how's and the where's but I assure you that it is being done "somewhere" - and not just by "user agent". Because, and I personally don't understand it, but it's because "they" (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge, Opera - they ALL do it!) think that "market share statistics" are somehow "important" or somehow actually "mean something". It's a meaningless statistic - there's the ol' adage ---- There are three types of lies -- lies, d@mn lies, and statistics. WTFC about a web brower's "market share"? Does it "really" mean anything? I have EIGHT comptuers and every one of them has 360Chrome v13 build 2206 and MyPay v27.9.4 on them, some have Basilisk, some have NM 27, some have NM 28. Am I being "bean-counted" EIGHT times for 360Chrome and MyPal? Even if 360Chrome gets used 90% of the time and MyPal only gets used 10% of the time? Like I say, "they" do it because "they" have the false impression that "market share" not only "means something", but that it is so vastly important that they should spend millions trying to gauge it and collect first-run data, user-agent data, et cetera, and place "The Great Supercomputer Deep Thought" (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) in a dark corner for 7.5 million years as it runs numbers on that data and find that Ultimate Answer -- 42... But I digress...

  3. This personally irritates me! I posted a First Run connections log for Basilisk several posts up. I counted eleven First Run connections in Basilisk yet they have gone completely unnoticed for "decades" yet one solitary gstatic connection in 360Chrome has the World in a Frenzy? Explain that, please! I'm showing Basilisk to make repeated connections with Cloudfare - why no frenzy? I'm showng Basilisk to make several connections with googleusercontent - why no frenzy? I'm showing Basilisk to make several connections with deploy.static.akamaitechnologies - why no frenzy? I'm showing Basilisk to make several connections with MCI Communications Services in Ashburn, VA - why no frenzy? I'm showing Basilisk to make several connections with Microsoft Corporation at One Microsoft Way in Richmond, WA - why no frenzy? What am I missing here? A blind trust for anything Firefox? Again, I wholly and fully support taking measures to make our own browsing experience free of telemetry! I've got nothing to "hide" and there is a balance between returning to driving a horse-drawn buggy and just allowing telemetry to go unchecked. But I have to admit, I really don't think that it is too much to ask for the folks that have such a great concern for 360Chrome making one solitary gstatic connection to have an equal concern for what their Firefox browsers have been logging for DECADES but has gone "unchecked" or "blindly trusted".

  4. It is a big deal DrugWash; of all the people dying in this world it does not have to be you at this time in your life if you get some food into you as soon as possible. You are talented with your writings and present your self nobly without error and are are favorite MSFN member of mine. You have achieved much in the world of computing look at your programing the crystal update and the case switch. How far away is the nearest bank? Please seek out a bank on-line that requires a non deposit to set up a bank account. If none, a money order to the nearest post office how does that sound to get you started. You have not created the worlds dystopia so do not hold yourself in low esteem. The world has made it harder for people to get a job or welfare but it would have been a better place if trickle down politics were not in place. I do not want to accept charity either and but I would if I needed it. Cheer up DrugWash do not lose the will to live.

  5. As a quick status update, I am targeting this weekend for a "rebuild #3" upload (v13 build 2206 rebuild 3). I didn't techincally do this one as a modification of "rebuild #2" but rather as a complete redo from the ground up from experiences gained in rebuilding several other build versions (ie, when we were testing on XP x86 SP2). I used portions of @Humming Owl's list of modifications and this has lead to a slightly different path (which may or may not be reverted, undecided at this point). One such change completely removes the Avatar context menu. There's two routes we can take with the Avatar context menu. That menu is mainly used for logging into a 360 Account (which we intentionally remove all functionality thereof). @Humming Owl's method to remove the 360 Account login function also completely removes this Avatar context menu, not just the 360 Account aspects but the entire context menu. For now, I went with this route also - it is "easiest" (by far) and I never really use the Avatar context menu. But there is an alternative route - we could keep the Avatar context menu, remove only the actual 360 Account aspects, and build that Avatar context menu into anything we want (links to History, Downloads, JavaScript console, Task Manager, link to MSFN 360Chrome general discussion thread, View page source, various chrome URLs, the list is endless). I am actually leaning towards turning that Avatar context menu into a list of chrome URLs -- for reference - https://www.ghacks.net/2012/09/04/list-of-chrome-urls-and-their-purpose/

  6. Drugwash said: 'Fact is the utopia in my head clashes hard with the dystopia of the real world, and I just can't take any more of it.' This hits me hard every day too, more bad news, more dysfunction and problems. Hang in there Drugwash. If you have the strength, keep digging, ride things out day by day and have hope for tomorrow. I was going to state the obvious, like try to find help (friend, neighbour, agencies, landlord, etc) but i'm sure you've been down this path. You have been a blessing to the Windows 9x community, sure would be nice to have you around longer so we can all get old and cranky together.

  7. "I was under the impression this pref would only work with FF53 (or Basilisk 55) user_pref("browser.tabs.remote.separateFileUriProcess", true); // add manually" Probably so. I am just testing, and have not yet tried loading file://s. I will soon test with tiddywiki and see. True, I have two nvidia quadro in this setup, so juice there is -but I tried in a lesser VM setup, and it ain't bad at all, compared to the status quo before learning about browser.tabs.remote.force-enable (thanks @Mathwiz). But I also have plenty confidence on the skills and foresight of @roytam1. PS: since my 15s I have cut my hair (myself, with sizers) cherokee (or something like that) style, so I have practice with using black stuff to cover the hairless-spots I've been leaving in my skull. Now I have to find some greyish stuff to do the trick

  8. I'm a little rusty and out of date on this, but I'll try to help: The only reason Vista doesn't handle SSDs as well as a more modern OS might is because Vista doesn't natively support SSDs, and thus can't issue necessary TRIM commands or self configure to minimize needless reads and writes, so performance can degrade with time. However, with some careful tweaking, Vista should be able to run just fine off an SSD. Lack of TRIM can be a problem, but as far as I know, many modern name-brand SSDs have pretty good self-maintenance and garbage collection, and so shouldn't be affected too badly. That being said, if you can boot into 8.1 periodically, you can let it TRIM the whole drive (either automatically or by using software that can allow one to trigger a TRIM manually). c

  9. A few more notes: 1) As somebody (sorry, couldn't find the comment) recommended in this forum in the last two days, install process lasso. It definitely helps taming multiprocess excesses that end up in crashes. It is free https://bitsum.com/company-news/process-lasso-v8-final-release-for-windows-xp-and-2003-completed/ 2) I just realized that some items in user.js DO NOT get entered or effect the expected change in about:config (see comments in the user.js entries below. For example, browser.tabs.remote.autostart gets created, but browser.tabs.remote. separatefileUriProcess doesn't. Similarly odd, dom.ipc.processCount gets modified (from 1 to 4), but javascript.options.strict doesn't change from false to true, as instructed in user.js. A pain in the neck. I comment in those items below. 3) In trying to set @XPerceniol suggested useragent, I realized that it did not get entered via user.js. You need to enter such manually (while being there, I tried to reset the useragent.override items for whatsapp and other sites, since I am using uacontrol-0.1.3.1.1-signed.1-signed. I then realized that they cannot be reset! After restart they remain as a name with an empty string. 4)If your machine has the juice, enable hardware acceleration in preferences, and the layers.something noted below. With one process doing so slow things down (I've been there). With multiprocess, it is almost like being back in 2010 (I feel so much younger). Below my current user.js settings: user_pref("browser.tabs.remote.force-enable", true); user_pref("dom.ipc.processCount", 4); user_pref("extensions.e10sBlocksEnabling", false); user_pref("browser.tabs.remote.autostart", true); user_pref("browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2",); // reset may be addon created user_pref("browser.tabs.remote.separateFileUriProcess", true); // add manually user_pref("extensions.e10sMultiBlockedByAddons", false); // add manually user_pref("dom.ipc.process.webLargeAllocation", 4); // add manually user_pref("layers.acceleration.enabled", true); // already default user_pref("layers.acceleration.force-enabled", true); // add manually user_pref("layers.force-active", true); // set manually user_pref("javascript.options.strict", true); // set manually With all of the above, sp52 plays heavy-scrioted sites (YT, gmail, FB, etc) almost as well as 360Chrome. Normal pages load fast! Cheers!

  11. This CVE indicates that the attacker would connect into the computer using RDP and then run a program. How to handle this would depend if you are using RDP or not. If not, you can disable it and while the exploit would still exist, the ability to use it would not.

  12. Most people don't care. But they have been noticed, and can be modified without much fuss from source, unlike chrome derivatives. The problem with the particular gstatic connection you mention is its history: it was once used to set up a unique identifier. Maybe that is not the case anymore. But that is why it irks people.

  13. For XP users I would recommend MiniBrowser (there is a tread about browsers for XP). There is a new version which have much better performance. Don't know if MiniBrowser works in Windows 2000.

  14. have you tried force old firefox mobile user agent? That helped on me discord desktop app uses electron and web client just uses too much js. Electron is basically Chromium wrapper to webpage to ship it as app that soydevs really loves to use instead of making native well optimised low ram consuming client.

  15. for some reason, you guys crack me up =P Well, my shrink has already renovated their entire property (I'm sure) from me alone, and I'm still nuts :) Well... they will have to come find me: The Ugly Animal Preservation Society named the blobfish as its mascot after a global online vote in 2013. The gelatinous fish lives at depths of up to 1,200 meters off the coast of Australia where it feeds on crabs and lobsters. It's under threat as it often gets caught up in fishing nets... but you wouldn't want to eat it. Will catch up with you guys tomorrow. I need to wind down and get ready for sleep - beauty like this doesn't happen by accident; as you can (clearly) see.

  16. I already disable web-gl and wasm out of the gate. Disabling WebRTC requires adding an extension which I don't install prior to public upload. UA-hints is a new one, I'll have to look into that one, thanks. Also not familiar with "no first run" flag, will look into that also, another thanks.

  17. Well , thank you . But it seems some folks can't live without emojis and other things (like first start and web-gl) so it will be very hard to have an agreement where everyone here is satisfied . But I can share my version with you , if you want , just shoot me a message. It is kinda heavily axed , brutally . But it has English errors which I'm too lazy/busy to fix. This would definitely annoy some certain members , so I won't publish it in the open.

  18. Those with an existing installation of uBO-legacy should have been updated automatically via GitHub; those (like me) who have auto-update turned-off, manually check for available updates and you should be offered new v1.16.4.30; lastly, those who want to install for the first time or experience auto/manual GitHub update "issues", the URI to the XPI file is found below: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock-for-firefox-legacy/releases/tag/firefox-legacy-1.16.4.30 This last release aims to mitigate the security vulnerability mentioned just previously in this thread by our security guru, i.e. @Sampei.Nihira

  20. An interesting thread. None of the registry entries mentioned there are present on my system at all. I did wonder whether I had actually done the registry hack and forgotten about it, but it seems not. Why I'm not seeing, and have never seen, the upgrade nag banner is a bit of a mystery! It could be because my Office 2010 installation is one of the Office Professional Plus ones you can buy very cheaply online, as mentioned in the thread regarding Office 2019. FWIW I gather that the selling of keys for those versions of Office has been declared legal in a court case, much to Microsoft's annoyance I'm sure! That would seem to be confirmed by the huge number of people selling them perfectly openly on legit sites like Amazon.

  21. After many updates, the only way to use DC in XP stable and with all features (in the web app) is using Extreme Explorer 360 (better use repacks or modded versions to remove tracking).

  22. The machine in question only had one IDE channel on the main board, which was detected by the OS as the primary channel. The IDE on the sound card was not detected by the BIOS but only by the OS (and designated as secondary channel), so one could not boot the machine from a HDD connected to that channel. I don't recall if there was any jumper on the sound card that would specifically choose which channel should the IDE be assigned to. If your main board already had two IDE channels then the OS would indeed have had trouble with a third one on the sound card, since only with the advent of SATA did the Windows OS start to acknowledge and configure more than two IDE channels - something the Win9x line doesn't do AFAIK. To mount an additional HDD to that particular machine it would need an extra IDE channel, either built into a soundcard or separate as an ISA card. The machine only has ISA slots and a VESA slot - no PCI. Any IDE2SATA adapters should be compatible with the old IDE/ATA standard employed by such ISA card. I vaguely remember having a few "newer" (at the time) HDDs that wouldn't be detected by the BIOS at all due to certain differences between the board IDE controller's standard and the standard used in the HDDs, so an adapter may face the same problem. BIOS hot swapping works but one must be extremely careful with every aspect of the operation. It's crucial that the chips are the exact same model or pin to pin compatible if they come from different brands/manufacturers. Sometimes they may be pin to pin compatible but operate with different voltage (i.e. 3.3V vs 5V, or 5V vs 12V), so that should also be taken into account. Two apparently identical main boards may use completely different chips so don't take board ID for granted. Accurate chip datasheets are mandatory.
