  1. A little off topic but it's hilarious the uproar over the Firefox "refresh" Proton. Who didn't expect it, I can't think of a designer change in the last 10 years that ever got better, it's always worse. Youtube same thing. Mozilla's obsession with the UI and their constant changes is going to cost them even more users.

  2. I maintain my sister's (work) computer which runs Win7 SP1 x64; once I upgraded her from Fx 88.0.1 to 89.0, I was most unpleasantly surprised , appalled is the word I'd choose ; she wasn't thrilled by the change, either... Especially on Win7 with aero enabled, the new Fx GUI (fogged tab bar) doesn't blend at all with the OS... TBH, I've stopped getting informed about Mozilla's planned shenanigans some years ago; they did lose me as a user (and a Nightly tester) when they made the decision to drop support for my favourite OS (Vista) ; I only skim the Release Notes every time I update Fx on my sister's box, just to make sure nothing major has been broken (e.g. my sister was very upset when they removed the "Page Info" context menu entry in Fx 88 : she was used to it being there, to aid her get direct links to images on pages; FWIW, you now have to use CTRL+I, until, of course, they kill that too in a future "upgrade"). You are quite right that with every design change, Fx gets worse/crippled ; we are probably just old "geezers" ("advanced users" is the Mozilla term) who have known and appreciated the great Firefox of an era gone-by without return (i.e. when functionality/customiseability/users' wishes were top priorities), the mobile-oriented young Fx users of today are probably more impressed with "trendy" looks and over-simplification... Plus, Mozilla currently employ a small army of well-paid young web/app designers, they have to constantly "re-invent the wheel" GUI-wise, their moto is "fix it until it's broken"; if they stopped messing with Fx's UI, they would have nothing to work on and probably made redundant... Instead, Mozilla keep them on and force into retirement/let go all the highly talented/accomplished "old school" developers of their glorious past... The end is near...

  3. I'm skeptical on the whole thing like I was with Windows 10. I've been using Windows 10 as a daily driver for a year now and even though I'm not fond of it, it drives a lot of the programs I've been running. So while it's not bad, it's not awesome and I've had more problems with it than my beloved Windows 2000. But of course as we've seen time and time again from Microsoft, there are usually a lot of bugs and stability issues with vanilla releases of Windows and don't really improve until the service packs start rolling out. It would be nice to see actual service packs again rather than these continuous rolling updates. Windows 10 never felt finished because of this update method. A small thing I miss is the ability to really tweak the user interface and use real themes. I don't care for the flatness of Windows 10 and prefer above anything, the Windows Classic theme which was completely removed. Even Aero had a bit more character than the Windows 10 theme. So I don't really expect that to change judging from the screenshots I've seen so far. But of course the big thing will be functionality and we'll have to see what the system requirements are to run the OS but I'm assuming they won't be too different from Windows 10. Probably anything that can run Vista smoothly will most likely be able to run Windows 11. For anyone that wants a little more information: https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/3/22466394/microsoft-windows-11-launch-teaser-rumors I would have to agree that launching a whole new Windows would be a smart move, considering that like the article says, new versions of Windows spark more PC sales and considering the whole Covid mess over the past year and a half and many US citizens receiving stimulus checks from the government, it could potentially nudge people who saved some of that money to buy a new computer. That's just my thought though.

  4. Same could be said for windows os 6.x (10 too as it was 6.4 not long ago). GUI fixing until it's broken (10) and made unusable. The problem is there is no alternative; ReactOS is still way off despite the latest activity and if there weren't roytam's Serpent browser, us XP veterans would have nothing.

  5. Guys, I just wanted to step by and ask for everyone to reinforce the request for blurred title bard in Curtains. I've already done it and they have this half-lame excuse that it's gonna be unstable or something. I think that's a bs excuse tbh. I believe that it'd help if everyone here who wants blurred title bars would go there and request this feature. Just an opinion. Cheers! edit: here's the relevant thread: https://forums.stardock.com/502003/page/1/#3794101

  6. This is almost 100% sun valley. But some people are rumoring that it may be a new release of Windows, like Windows 11. What do you guys think? This could be the first major release since 2015.

  7. I think it's actually ok but they should have created their own russian language pack, leaving the english one untouched, instead of "russifying" everything. This would have made more sense.

  8. Did you remove the Russian Language setting in the Preferences file? <excerpt> C) Changes made to the file "Preferences" (in Chrome/User Data/Default) - I searched for the "accept_languages" entry and then modified the line "accept_languages": "ru-RU,ru,en-US,en" and replaced by "accept_languages": "en-US,en". This action allows to display websites in English and not in Russian. </excerpt>

  9. I don't think @Dixel is referring to me on that one. There were several conspiracy theory discussions in the 360Chrome thread(s) but I have moved on and accepted that @Dixel and I simply had a case of misunderstanding and I have moved beyond it. I haven't seen the need to dig up any sort of "history" as far as on my end. I think I have a relatively good history here of being "helpful" and staying "out of the fray". Long Live MSFN... Long Live Win XP...

  10. I technically only download from https://lrepacks.net/repaki-programm-dlya-interneta/182-360-extreme-explorer-amp-portable.html But they only keep the link to the most recent. So unless I upload my own copies downloaded from above link, then I don't know of any better place to find the "betas". @Dixel - when you refer to your preference for one of the early betas, which build number by chance?

  11. Update: Now that's not very clever: The russian version comes with an installer that doesn't seem to work on Windows XP. So you have a recent browser for XP but you can't install or at least unpack it... But I used Windows 7 to unpack it and NOW I can confirm that the Russians DID remove quite a bit of the telemetry stuff. However it still connects to chinese IPs, as soon as you open the settings page (36.110.236.41 China Telecommunications Corporation) I don't know if this is because of a setting that tries to "phone home" or if it always tries to connect to this IP as soon as you open the settings page. I assume it is something in the options.zip file that makes it connect to this chinese IP but I don't really want to check every single file in there for chinese IPs or URLs....

  12. From what I've seen regarding next release is just GUI and Store changes. No "real" changes under the hood, just the way it "looks" and the Store (which I axe anyway).

  14. Here's one of them, he does Firefox designing on his iPad. Judging by Proton who's surprised? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIGuElYZZzQ It took me about a half a day to restore it mostly back with userChrome but that's thanks to dedicated css writers who had the code ready to go.They knew exactly what was wrong with Proton, why didn't Mozilla? That's another major complaint, options are there forever that people are used to and depend on and the next update they're suddenly gone. I have custom buttons made, including Page Info that maintains the consistency but I also have to rely on the addons not breaking. For the first time since IE6 I'm actually working with another browser. Normally Windows 10 is ignored but after the 21H1 update I began trying out Edge and it's not too bad. So that along with Roy's build may be the future.

  16. The 1 MB is only a round, consistent number, multiple of *everything*. The actual "typical" cluster size is 4 kb, BUT when we are talking of SSD's or flash devices there is a "page size" (that usually is larger, like 16 kB, 32 kB, 64 kB, 128 kB). As a matter of fact (and this has briefly happened in Vista times with certain sizes of mass storage devices) a 128 kB alignment is as good as the MB one. Having the start of the partition (more properly of the volume) on a "round multiple" automatically makes (on NTFS BUT NOT on FAT) any file become "aligned" (to 4kB), set apart very small files, the "bulk" of files will be largely (except for the uneven "tail") be "conforming" to the page size also. On FAT (16/32/64) it is possible to either offset the partition or manipulate the reserved sectors and/or FAT size so that the first file is aligned (and from then onwards all files will be aligned). Steve6375 did quite a few tests (on USB sticks where the difference is actually noticeable) and made special provisions for partitioning/formatting in his tools, at the moment reboot.pro (where he shared tests results) is down, here it is (hopefully temporarily) via Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20190530042213/http://reboot.pro/topic/16783-rmprepusb-faster-fat32-write-access-on-flash-memory-drives/ but you can probably read something about the matter on his site: https://rmprepusb.com/ jaclaz

  21. Don't get me started on that one! I believe in personal accountability and you CAN RETIRE if you live your life properly! Don't buy a home that takes you thirty years to pay off (I paid off mine in THREE! - the bank pre-approved me for a $350,000 mortgage, I bought a $67,000 three-bedroom one-bath while driving a paid-off 18yr old car rusting out from under me). Don't live in vain so much so that you trade cars in every three to four years because you want to be seen in something "new". Don't buy a brand new vehicle and put yourself under a 6-year auto loan at the age of 62 then complain that you can't retire at 64 because Social Security won't pay for your auto loan and your 30-year mortgage. Don't complain at 64 that you "can't live off of Social Security" when you lived life in such a manner that you are still paying for a 30-year mortgage when you bought your house 50 years ago. Don't complain at 64 that the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment was 1.30% when the inflation rate is 1.25%. Or that two years before the COLA was 2.80% when the inflation rate was 2.49%. That is UPSIDE DOWN and WILL BE the reason why the NEXT GENERATION has no Social Security because you broke the bank.

"Rome wasn't built in a day" comes to mind.....;) We will never change Microsoft.....they got lost along the way...it is a shame that everything comes down to money.....this is why I will never respect Microsoft for what they have become.... bookie32

  23. Java 8 has been broken bit by bit for XP, jdk u60: javafxpackager/javapackager not run because of PE issue jre u60: javafx might not run on non-SSE2? as it compiled by vc2013 jre u112: javafx not works on XP, last working U111 jre u151: the last working installer jre u251: native crypto provider MSCAPI switch to NCrypt (API prefix also changed) jre u261: all exe not run because of PE issue, TLS 1.3 introduced note that this guide not needed if you use ojdkbuild https://github.com/ojdkbuild/ojdkbuild/releases/download/java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.242-1.b08-x86/java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.242-1.b08.ojdkbuild.windows.x86.msi How to make oracle java installer for XP? First, Oracle doesn't use normal approach with its installer, inside its executable e.g. jre-8u241-windows-i586.exe there is msi but this it doesn't do the entire job, there is another installer within it that do extraction and binary patching (bsdiff) while reporting back to msiexec (msi and installer.exe must from same version), any failure will cancel remaining actions and trigger rollback tools needed: xn resource editor (resource hacker 4.2.5 run out of memory when injecting huge file) orca bsdiff (search bsdiff4.3-win32.zip) archiver e.g. 7zip 1. Get the msi from U111, U151 and U241 installer using xnre. open jre-8uXXX-windows-i586.exe, go to RCDATA ordinal 100 and export as jreXXX.exe open jreXXX.exe, go to JAVA_INSTALLER ordinal 103, export as jreXXX.msi 2. Extract jreXXX.msi from cmd run msiexec /a jreXXX.msi /qb TARGETDIR="%CD%\jreXXX\" 3. edit jre151.msi inside jre151 folder, open jre151.msi in orca replace text 151->241, 1.8.0.1510.12->1.8.0.2410.7, b12 -> b07, 1.8.0_151->1.8.0_241 optional: change summary and the guid of package, upgrade and product code change INSTALLDIR's defaultdir set updater property to 0, not really needed since we skip its msi (ordinal 105) 4. Extract the "final zip" of U111 and U241 inside jreXXX\Java\jre1.8.0_XXX open installer.exe in xnre export RCDATA ordinal 5 as patch.bs and 6 as old.zip run bspatch old.zip new,zip patch.bs extract the new zip 5. Combine U111 and U241 Replace javafx files (see below) in U241's extracted new.zip with one from U111 Remove C++ 2017 runtime from U241 as they only needed by JavaFX U241 6. Recreate bspatch step with combined zip Zip combined jre files as jre.zip (use store compression) and make a copy as jre2.zip run bsdiff jre.zip jre2.zip patch.bs, yes just a dummy diff. replace U151 installer.exe RCDATA 5->patch.bs and 6->jre.zip set the proper ordinal and locale as original one. 7. Ptionally re-run msiexec /a jre151.msi /qb TARGETDIR="%CD%\jre151\" to cleanup the msi 8. Test it JavaFX files: bin\msvcp120.dll bin\msvcr120.dll bin\javafxpackager.exe (jdk) bin\fxplugins.dll bin\glass.dll bin\glib-lite.dll bin\gstreamer-lite.dll bin\javafx_font.dll bin\javafx_font_t2k.dll bin\javafx_iio.dll bin\jfxmedia.dll bin\jfxwebkit.dll bin\prism_common.dll bin\prism_d3d.dll bin\prism_sw.dll lib\ant-javafx.jar (jdk) lib\javafx.properties lib\javafx-mx.jar (jdk) lib\jfxswt.jar caveat: browser plugin is marked as unverified, not really matter as applet will get blocked anyway due to "out of date" policy. If you need to browser plugin (for retro purpose), use Java 6 or older. Personally I have rebuild installer with jdk tool included, it could save space at just 39MB while jre-only at 29MB. The saving come from the fact that no actual binary patch happen.
