  1. What, tabbed browsing? IIRC Maxthon was the first IE shell (or maybe even the first "browser") to have tabbed browsing, but I don't know if the 9x versions have it. Unless you are talking about memory pages...

  2. True. PsExec works. For example, Process Explorer, although it seems to work, does not report correct values. The last version that certainly works with Windows XP is 16.12. Sigcheck build 2.80 does not work. The build I use is 2.30.

  3. I like your post , though blocking is not easy , even with a good firewall . As one may guess , they (devs of firewalls) may (surely) work in conjuction with corporations. I have a good example , I will just leave the link here , I do not like double posting . That's just one example , I have others . Any ideas ? https://msfn.org/board/topic/62611-ssdp-discovery-service-ssdpsrv/?do=findComment&comment=1195214

  4. Monitoring your own network is easy. Get a network analysis software like Wireshark and have a look at, what happens on your network. And then you have to ask for every web packet, why it's there. You'll come across different web protocols. And then you need a wall to block everything you didn't ask for: A firewall! Even if it might not be possible to configure current Windows to not chat around, with a good firewall their connections can be blocked surely. Be aware of the fact, that the Hosts file is undermined since Windows XP! Microsoft servers can't be blocked with it, instead, block entries for some websites are just ignored. Very trustworthy, indeed, my dear Microsoft! For some reason, todays computer still start up, even if no internet connection is there. Consider there were discussions about Windows XP needing an internet connection to activate it 15 years ago (telephone activation was possible, too). People got upset about the power, Microsoft tried to enforce on the users. So Microsoft working against user privacy, 100% true! And not only them. Maybe have a look at something as harmless looking as a printer. Color printers put a nearly-invisible yellow grid (MIC, Machine Identification Code) over your printouts. It is reported, that this method helped the NSA sometimes. Collecting and reading data is done by machines. A huge database about what people have said and done. The big brother presses Ctrl+F on the giant database, searches for the keywords of choice. You better stay on the rails to avoid being found! This is no order! Dammit! I can tell you that the East German state security would have been very keen on these spying technologies... they would have used them! They've educated people to spy on each other. You can't believe how cruel humans can be. I'm sorry to sound that negative, but it happened unfortuneatly before... so you better set up your network right!

  5. Wireshark can be overwhelming for beginners, you can also look into something else like TCPView. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/tcpview

  6. All tools would work with Windows Vista OS minimum. But instead PsExec also runs on Windows XP.

  8. There is absolutely no need in any accusations ! I think some answers here are just plain rude . What do you mean "he's lying" , it's at least rude . He doesn't owe you anything . It's his personal business (location and nationality) . The question of the topic does he spell like a 12 year old , it's not a rogue interrogation , but looks like one. Leave this fella be.

  9. That's not a wifi icon, that's the View Channels button linked to the Channel Bar and channels in general, heavily promoted with IE4 that came with 98 First Edition, 95 OSR2.5 and as a free download for 95. It was removed in 98 Second Edition from the Quick Launch, as the focus on the channels and channel bar seems to largely disappear once IE5 came. 98 SE does not show Channel Bar at the desktop by default for example.

  11. It seems to be something on a cable provider. Is your E-Mail service provided by Cox, perhaps? Or, are you loading an E-Mail that is loading remote resources from Cox? https://whois.toolforge.org/gateway.py?lookup=true&ip=98.184.220.29 I should note that my installation of MailNews is not making this connection, instead connections to Google, Microsoft, and Yandex. Which makes sense, as my three E-Mail accounts are through those companies. Though, it would be cool to know why it is keeping connections open to my mail servers, when I have set it to check only every 30 minutes (immediate notifications box is unchecked for all accounts)

  13. Got some time to test on my other system with Haswell : Nvidia CPL still says "PCI-e" with XP and "PCI-e gen 3.0" with Vista (3.0 because this is a newer mobo). The games still feel much slower on XP. Also , there is a terrible screen tearing when I move any folder across the screen , the same with all of the games that I try to run in windowed mode. Is it supposed to be like that on XP ? V-sync and tripple buffering aren't any help. The same is with Win7 when aero is turned off . By the way , quality wise Win7 is on the same level with XP. The picture is flat and washed out . Games are cut off by several mm when launched in windowed mode , but this is not the case when running them on Vista. This is my first experience with XP . I skipped XP and went from 2000 to Vista in 2007.

  14. Your samples (mp3, mp4) play absolutely fine with VLC-3.0.12-win64 on 64-bit Vista without any updates , yes , I have no updates and I have no extended kernel. The test was done on real hardware. Also , tested DTS HD MA files and it plays them fine on my receiver. But louder than the older versions . Suggestion : uninstall updates.

  16. Okay, I understand fully that you need Office 2013+, but not me. When my Office 2010 becomes completely obsolete (which is certainly not going to happen in the next 5 years), I will embrace LibreOffice and will never touch newer versions of MS Office. Who needs Movie Maker when there is Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, etc.etc.? It's too basic. OneDrive can be used in a web browser. Other than that, I agree, MS messed up Vista support for apps and made sure to frighten many legacy Windows users, but we at MSFN have not fallen prey to their intimidation techniques.

  17. Windows 7 64bit works on UEFI with GPT spindle disks just fine. It is only some NAND or NVMe that can cause a problem. IMO: unless you want to use Bitlocker, a boot disk larger than 2.2 TB or a UEFI-only video card, there is no reason to enable UEFI for Windows 7.

  18. Says "PCI Express x16", no info about which generation. I checked with GPU-Z 2.36.0, it switches between 1.1 and 2.0 modes, depending on the load. I rarely play games these days, last DX9 game I played a while ago was Prototype and it definitely played smoother on my Windows 10 install than on XP. The difference is significant that no FPS meters and such were needed to detect the difference. Surely the driver on 10 install is newer (in 430.xx range), but I haven't noticed any speed difference with the older 368.81 in games in general on Win7 and later systems. I remember when DOOM (2016) came out and it was unplayable on the 368.81 driver, so couldn't stay on that version forever. Anyway, back to XP, there is another game that feels as smooth as should be on both XP and 10; Wolfenstein: The New Order, though this one uses OpenGL.

  20. HP Pavilion Notebook (can't find much else about this model other than that.) AMD A6-6310 APU with AMD Radeon R4 Graphics 6 GB DDR3 RAM 1 tb hdd I hadn't known much about vista up until about 2 - 3 years ago. I wasn't as tech savvy before then so I just thought vista was another windows version that was different because of the name. After I learned about how vista had gotten quite the bad reputation for it's apparent "instabilities", I did a bit more research into vista, then I tried vista, and loved it. Shortly after that I stopped caring about vista because I was really big into trying to obtain copies of Windows 7 and such. Fast forward to about late last year and I discover a few videos about some people trying vista in 2020. Didn't really care until I discovered WinClient5270 and his guide about how to make vista safe to use in the modern era. Then I forgot about vista for a bit again until I started downgrading my laptop a bit, then I asked myself this question; "Can I use vista on this thing?" I started doing a bit more research into all my drivers and seeing if they would work with vista. Then after doing that I installed vista. So far my experience has been quite nice! Despite the fact that some drivers were a pain in the a** to install i'm quite enjoying vista. I'm not planning to move operating systems for a while because vista is my new home.

  21. Lenovo G580 Model 20150 Intel Core i3-2348M 2.30GHz 8GB of DDR3 RAM A 1TB HDD Originally ran Win 8 but it's not my favourite, so I put 7 on it and dualbooted with Vista, both are 64-bit. I'm using Vista because it was the first OS I ever used and I really like it. I have to dualboot with 7 though, because I need modern software compatibility.

  22. Hi Osman Kovan: Are you able to purchase songs and/or download previous purchases from the iTunes Store if you sign in to iTunes v12.1.3.6 with two-factor authentication? Candy Crush Saga is a free app in Apple's App Store so I'm wondering you can actually purchase a song from the iTunes Store and download it to your Vista SP2 computer when you log in to the iTunes Store with 2FA. ---------------- 32-bit Vista Home Premium SP2 * Firefox ESR v52.9.0 * Malwarebytes Premium v3.5.1-1.0.365 HP Pavilion dv6835ca, Intel Core2Duo T5550 @ 1.83 GHz, 256 GB WD SATA HDD, 3 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

  24. Remember all the doom and gloom announced by tech sites all over, that Kaby Lake processors would be incompatible with Windows 7 and 8.1? http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-7-wont-work-intels-current-next-gen-cpus/ http://www.pcworld.com/article/3112663/software/microsoft-made-em-do-it-the-latest-kaby-lake-zen-chips-will-support-only-windows-10.html Well... I managed to get my HP laptop with an Intel Core i7 7500U and Intel HD 620 GPU working, without a single warning symbol on Device Manager. It was a bit tricky though... I had to install the Kernel Mode Driver Framework and User Kernel Mode Driver Framework v1.1 updates, along with a pretty obscure hotfix released by Microsoft, to make Windows 7 support TPM 2.0. http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/updt/2012/11/windows6.1-kb2685811-x64_191e09df632b70fd4f4b27d4cb9227f7c5a1c98c.msu http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/updt/2012/11/windows6.1-kb2685813-x64_22a969bada171678b0936bb320e6a7778e8adc07.msu https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2920188/update-to-add-support-for-tpm-2.0-in-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2 There was no USB support after the fresh install, so I had to put the essential USB 3.0 drivers on a CD-RW I had laying around. Aside from that, Intel also really doesn't want you to install Windows 7 on their new platform... The GPU drivers were compatible with 7, but the HW IDs for the new iGPUs were exclusive to the Windows 10 part of the file. All I had to do was copy paste them to the 7/8.1 section, and it installed without any problem. Also, the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework drivers were only available for 10... Had to search the HW IDs on google to find older compatible versions. Now I should finish setting up the system, and see if I can get updates. Will report back
