I had done a bit of work on the x86 kernel32, by adding relocations, but I'm still getting nowhere with Advanced Chrome 74/84. I'll try adding a few more functions to kernel32 to bring it closer in line with the x64 one anyway. And I'll revisit x86 shell32 in due time (I've found a possible working stub for SetExplicitUserModelID or whatever it's called). It's just that I've focused on win2k stuff for the past few days...

Unfortunately, there is no solution to this problem. This occurs because Microsoft cut SHA-1 signing from Windows Update, so Windows Update on Windows 2000, XP and Vista no longer work, and Windows 7 needs a manual update in order for Windows Update to work again. An alternative is:

Fetched the mpam-fe.exe and ran it . MSE was reluctant to show any changes. After rt click and unblock, ran mpam-fe.exe again. Couple of mins later, mse picked it up. Seems fine. Seems only kb447419 is required. I guessed it would only need kb4474419 because I had done this previously

Hmm, before installing KB4474419 you are supposed to install the April 2019 servicing stack update KB4493730 (at least according to Microsoft), and the September 2019 SSU might not be a bad idea either. I have no idea what effect this might have regarding MSE definition updates however.

This is what it showed on 8th August. I didn't download the definitions myself, so mse must have. I installed mse. Then rebooted. Not more than a few mins later, I installed the kb4474419. Possibly it downloaded the mpam thing before I installed kb4474419. Then mse was able to install those updated defs it had already downloaded . I don't have any other theories. The os was freshly installed on 8th August, so there was only that one incident of mse downloading the defs.

Yes. On 8th August, it downloaded and installed the definitions by itself. On 9th August, it refused. The only post 2017 update installed is kb4474419. Is it possible it downloaded the definitions, before I installed kb4474419, and only after installing kb4474419 it installed the definitions it had previously downloaded. Maybe, because I installed mse first. At some point, I will go and fetch from the link you posted and see if it will work that way.

"mpas-fe.exe", whether 32 or 64-bit, is the standalone offline installer for updated anti-spyware (as) definitions; this file should only be used to manually update Windows Defender, Vista's native anti-spyware solution! "mpam-fe.exe", whether 32 or 64-bit, is the standalone offline installer for updated anti-spyware (as) + anti-malware (am) definitions; this file should only be used to manually update MSE (NB that when MSE is first installed, WD is being de-activated, so as not to conflict with MSE, which is both an anti-spyware and anti-malware solution!) You should probably only download from the (revamped) Microsoft Security Intelligence portal: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates Definitions for MSE there get updated 3-5 times during the course of 24h, but probably once a day is a sane frequency to manually update... Must be some telepathy because I just TODAY installed Windows Vista with SP2 just for fun in VMware and found they broke Windows Update due to SHA-2. Offline updating is always better. Thank you! By the way, Windows Vista offline updating finishes must faster if you disconnect from the internet otherwise every update tried to check applicability online and gets super slow. I hope everyone knows this. This was fixed in later versions of Windows. @greenhillmaniac, which updates exactly are language-specific? I noticed some Ultimate Extras folders were named in Portuguese. I did find the updates with pt-pt or ptg in their file names. Any others too? Are Ultimate Extras non-English?

A while ago I did some google search about WUMT. The developer of the tool is said to be elusive and avoids publicity. The Russian forum mentioned above seems to be the original source of WUMT and the thread on My Digital Life followed. There are two verions of WUMT: 20.12.2016 - supports XP -> Win10 07.01.2020 - supports Win10 only Major Geeks replaced v20.12.2016 with v07.01.2020 early this year and does not have the older version available for download any more. Windows Update Offline Scan File wsusscn2.cab is updated from time to time and includes lists of all available updates for different versions of Windows. I could not figure out how often it is updated and which OSes are actually supported. I used it with XP, POSReady 2009 and Windows Embedded Standard 7. Yup. the 20.12.2016 version still works fine (the ru-board forum post seem to have it crossed-down, probably the author reverted the changes due to that). I got it from here: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/windows-update-minitool.64939/ also I'll make sure to upload the .cab I used soon.
