  4. This would mean to give up on all the hardware in the PC, except the 7 disk drives. Not to mention the decade old install of XP with most issues ironed out, all my little tweaks, and all my programs. At work i used a Dell D620 to do my job at repairing tablets, i3/i5/i7s and all kinds of other new crap. I had to replace it with a D830 after a HDD break and another (still undiagnosed) failure, that made even a freshly installed XP to BSOD at most inappropriate times. Still keep the D620 just in case, though. My coworkers tried to shoehorn a tower workstation on me, but they took it away after months of it just collecting dust under my table, lol. I only used that to test disks and PCI cards...

  5. Believe me, people who reach here CAN upgrade their PC, but for whatever reason, they don't want to. Don't spoil the fun of teaching 'em old dogs some new tricks

  6. Try Explorer++ - I use it on Windows 8. It really does look a lot like XP Explorer the way I have it set up.

  7. Potplayer is both x86 and x64, so I think it tried to install the x64 version on your XP x64 even if you wanted the 32bit version. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the 64bit isn't supported. The 32bit version, however, works as expected on XP x86 without any fancy mod or anything. I have an x86 version of XP myself, so...

  8. That's too bad. It seems that many of the bigger PC makers are conspiring with MS to force everyone to use Win10 (Intel all but admitted to the fact when they announced that Kaby Lake onwards would have no official support for anything other than 10). I still use the last closed-source version, Classic Shell 4.3.0, because I've had bad luck with Open Shell every time I've tried it (it *really* doesn't like Windows 7 or 8.x, as it crashes often and exhibits very strange UI glitches that render it unusable. That aspect doesn't bother me, as I don't use the feature (I use OldNewExplorer instead, as the Win Vista/7 Explorer UI, while still not my favorite, is in many ways far superior to the Ribbon UI in Win8 and up). Have you looked into 7+TaskBarTweaker? It goes a long way toward making the taskbar more sane (it doesn't make it XP-like, but I'd say probably more Vista-like). Yeah, that would be very nice. If someone could find a way to make the Win2000/XP explorer.exe (with its original XP-style UI) work on 7 and up, that would pretty much solve all our usability problems. It should be technically possible, except it probably links to various system dlls that have had their contents either rearranged or removed in newer Windows versions. Perhaps with some kind of patch, the old explorer can be linked to renamed versions of any XP-compatible dlls it needs to work? It should also be theoretically possible to get a 100% classic taskbar and start menu this way, if this hypothetical patched up explorer were set as the default shell. c

  9. I just went through that with my father's ASUS Kaby Lake laptop. It could probably run W7/8.1 but no one wants to buy extra licences so I tried Linux and had issues with the several distros I tried. One of the GPUs seemed to keep crashing Xorg or the WM. Tried GhostBSD but the touchpad didn't work. So it was back to W10. Open-Shell has definitely improved on the classic start menu, but I do feel that the way it implements its explorer modifications is quite strange, being inside the ribbon interface. So I would prefer the Windows 2000 shell, especially with an option to have the taskbar the way it was before Windows 7 (the grouping of items is odd to me, as is the mixing of "quick launch" items with other taskbar items). Maybe we should recompile Calmira as x86-32 or x64? Or maybe we can run NewShell from NT 3.51 since that is probably native win32. I think there's also an IBM Workplace Shell for NT, though that would be like using OS/2.

  10. It means that a new version of PotPlayer has been released and it's still compatible with XP. PotPlayer is very well known to be a very good player based on open codecs that still supports Windows XP, so, instead of writing every time "A new version of PotPlayer which still supports Windows XP has been released, namely version xxxx" Sampei just began to write "Out PotPlayer v. xxxxx". Anyway, I understand that it can be a bit confusing for people unfamiliar with the software and the topic. For the records: I was offered to update the other day, I updated and it's working flawlessly.

  11. Thanks for the heads up. I had uninstalled and delayed the update that originally broke aeroglass, and now I will delay it further. I wonder if BigMuscle was waiting to do an update until the May update came through. Those bigger biannual updates always break aeroglass. It would of been counterproductive to fix it a few weeks ago, only to have it break again when this month's update rolls out.

  13. When I was watching the news, I found this recent image of someone using a laptop running Vista with one of the last "XP" versions of Chrome. It was covered up at that airing but when the image aired earlier in the day the laptop's palmrest was shown with a "designed for Vista" sticker. Someone needs to tell them about New Moon and Serpent!!

  15. Again, NO. A RAID 1 is a "plain" mirroring, the two disks appear as a single disk, with the capacity of one of the two (the smallest one in case of different sized disk). A RAID 0 is a (striped) set of two disks that appear to the user as a single disk double the size. You have NOT checked in any sensible way whether the set is a striped set or a (hypothetical) concatenated one, but a RAID 0 will appear to the user EXACTLY as "just the capacity of two disks joined into one". jaclaz
