  1. Well, I finally have some definitive news to share concerning KB4507704; unfortunately, it's not the news I was hoping for. After much digging, I have come to learn from a credible source that Microsoft did indeed produce KB4507704 for Windows XP Embedded POSReady 2009. The notification stating it is available for POSReady 2009 through the methods listed in it's support article is, obviously, inaccurate because Microsoft never followed through with their official formal process of releasing KB4507704 for POSReady 2009 through Windows Update, WSUS or the update catalog. As it stands now, because POSReady 2009 has reached EOS, the only way to gain access to it is to open a paid support ticket with Microsoft in order to get it released, despite them being the ones who published the erroneous information in the first place. Unbelievable. So there you have it. All the speculation and theories put forth here have proven to be correct. Thank you and good work everyone! Not to worry though, if you're a Microsoft Premier Support subscriber/member/partner, you undoubtedly already have KB4507704 (along with all the other security and non-security updates released over the past year) installed on your Windows XP/POSReady 2009 systems. For us franchisees of the Casablancan Supermarket chain, thankfully we have been graciously provided with a custom registry fix by @win32 to help us not only accomplish the same thing as KB4507704 but with the added benefit that it can also be applied to all NT 5.x OSes. Finally, I would just like to close by saying that Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to have information publicly available on their own website(s) that give the impression this update is easily obtained from methods we've been accustomed to utilizing over the years. If they aren't going to ultimately release KB4507704 for POSReady 2009 to the update catalog, then at the very least they should correct the information on their support page(s) to reflect this. Tsk. Tsk.

  3. ElectroBOOM published a new video in which it compares different kind of lightbulbs and he used a camera to analyze the light spectrum. The software he used to see the spectrum was clearly running on Windows XP. Video (if you're curious, check minute 6:33):

  4. I am clearly missing something, but a (larger) copper shim can be cut to measure, can't it? About thickness of the thermal pad, I believe we are talking between 5% and 20% , that is, starting from 1.5 mm the final, tightened, thickness will be anything between 1.2 and 1.4 mm, but I am perplexed by your expected precision, it is not a (Swiss) mechanical watch, 0.2 mm (two tenths of a millimeter) difference in thickness is unnoticeable/irrelevant, and it also depend on how tightly you screw the heatsink down. @dencorso Sure, sometimes I wonder how we managed to survive[1] at all, with all the lead and asbesto we must have been in contact with in our youth (nevermind no car seat belts, no helmets, no safety breakers on mains, no "use by date" on food, free roaming on the roads as kids, etc.). jaclaz [1] there must be a reason why it is called "survivor bias"

  6. Seems like a bug or some kind of security feature - though it's possible just to not expose anything via MTP if phone is locked without disabling it entirely. Same on my LineageOS 14.1 based on Android 7.1.2. On Sony's stock OS based on Android 4.4.4, it was also possible to use MTP and USB tethering simultaneously if I remember correctly. Here, the options in USB configuration indicate to be able to use either one or another, so it was done intentionally.

  8. I was watching a documentary made in 2019 about Chinese PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) factories and what happens when an engineer submits its order with the circuit to the factory in order to print it and I found something interesting: our beloved OS, Windows XP. It's funny, though, how factories are relying on Windows XP to produce hardware that is shipped all over the world, most of which doesn't support that OS... Windows XP booting in the background:

  9. Try adjusting the decoder options in the FFDSHow video decoder confiuration. I experienced the video lockups but sound still playing due to the quality conrol 'Drop frame on delay' setting. It would catch up after a minute or two but got annoying. Certain formats are cpu/vid intensive. Tried using an H.264 vid on my laptop and only started getting smooth play when enabling 'Resize & aspect' to not only resize to a smaller output but also setting the 'Luma Method' to 'point'. Seems higher quality vids on some systems cause alot of video delay (latency behind the audio). Can see (and adjust setting accordingly) the video delay by enabling the OSD and checking in 'Video Delay'.

  10. Just a followup / update. The link provided for FFDSHOW points to a discontinued branch of it's development. Milan stopped development of it long ago it seems (back in '04). Continued development based on Milan's FFDSHOW branch can be found at the following URL: http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/ Also to add: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/ Last version of Haali's Media Splitter that works on win9x was on 03-06-2007 and can be found at http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_so....cfm/03_06_2007 It is used for the opening and support of MKV video/audio containers.
