I'm looking for some advice regarding this PC: XP Pro SP3 MB: Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 RAM: 2GB DDR2-800 I just got 8GB of RAM for it and I'm wondering if I should: a) use a PAE Patch to make use of the full 8GB. If so, which patch should I use? b) use 4GB as RAM and 4GB as some type of ram disk for the Page File. If so, which ram disk? c) some other arrangement?

Microsoft is known for its MiStakes, the biggest one of course being Windows 10, and I think accidentally revealing a premier support (now renamed Unified Support) update is certainly up there. Microsoft's Security Update ISOs from 2010 to 2013 had several Windows 2000 updates that obviously weren't meant to be publically released; unfortunately this method of update distribution ended in July 2016. Since it was released in July 2019 and is a non-security update, it probably falls into the same category as the Windows 2000 updates and wasn't meant for public release. The Unified Support sales number is 1-800-426-9400. Not sure how useful it will be though. Other than that, I found a reference to per-incident support (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4341255) but you need a M$ account to access it. For that, I guess you could say "my chain of supermarkets in Casablanca has the wrong time on their POSReady machines" and see what they could do for you, though I don't see anyone buying that.

My ThinkPad T42p has an Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller, here are the latest 98SE drivers for Intel LAN adapters: http://www.tmeeco.eu/9X4EVER/GOODIES/PRO98M.EXE Any Intel LAN chip that is not in the INF of these drivers will probably not work at all. My ASRock H110M-DVS R3.0 has an old enough revision of the generic Realtek gigabit chip that lucklily works with the official Realtek LAN drivers for 98SE. I haven't done any testing myself on either of these adapters in terms of speed. Maybe will do in the future. Have you tried using TCP Optimizer v. 3.08? My on-board NIC drew more current than it should but is better now. It was the first to go slow when the power supply dipped. I changed the power supply (PSU) which was weak to fix this. I run my HT Bus speed at 400 at the moment for two reasons the PS2 port and the NIC. The mother board is going well. I think these 2 pieces of hardware were not exercised before I got it and it is important to have everything running correctly. The HT bus was 400 before I changed the power supply. The PSU was OK but got worse especially when I was using 3 SCSI drives, some are sensitive to voltage dips and also were playing up. The power supply was getting weaker over time. I have had to run the HT bus at lowest settings for video cards on other machines. Once things have worn in a bit the bus speed can be increased a bit but this will take some time. If everything is working correctly then the motherboard is less likely to fail and should have a long life. The on-board NIC goes at 5.2 MBytes/s at the moment from Win10 machine writing to WinME. It is a 100Mbit/s NIC.

In the past I've written basic MIDI software that captures keystrokes. It supports polyphonic live playback, instrument switching, recording to a MIDI file, and even a sustain pedal. It uses the system MIDI synthesizer for playback. If there is sufficient interest, I could open a project topic for it.
