  3. By far the worst prob for old Win98 browsers in today's web is outdated https-encryption (SSL/TLS). Websites insisting to connect with modern TLS1.2 are completely BLOCKED, showing only error pages, usually this infamous one: Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap That desaster started only 1-2 years ago with Google's command to encrypt the whole public web with modern standards too, and things went downhill fast. Meanwhile half the internet is broken for old Firefox/Mozilla browsers! Amazingly, old Opera12.02 (needs KernelEx) is still holding up much better, it was amazingly advanced for its time, but now losing the uphill battle too. Lucky the people who can run the last Presto version (Opera 12.15?) Luckily, especially for Mozilla fans, rescue came from projects like Retrozilla, with TLS1.2, for pure vanilla Windows98. https://msfn.org/board/topic/174987-x/ And since a few years also from roytam1. Focussing mainly on Mozilla browsers for XP, but occasionally also a special build for older systems. Such a pity that he doesn't create own topics here for his fascinating Win98-browser updates. But hidden away in the middle of giant melting pot topics in the XP-forum that stuff just gets lost. Only just-for-fun hobby users of retro stuff (like himself) may stumble across it over there. So what do, to give notice of those gems to more regular users of old systems too? Which are HERE? Perhaps we can at least collect some links here, for real 9X users, to find that stuff easier. And there's probably more interesting stuff floating around out there somewhere, from other people, that could be added too. For longer discussions of single projects it would be better if anyone can create new separate topics around here, to keep that stuff together, then in THIS topic just post the link and a bit description.

  4. TechnoRelic said: > However , NOW , with 'Mathwiz' tweak , the ADOBE PRIMETIME CDM 'Plugin' install *DOES* solve the problem. Just a little friendly hint, and the above only as short example: You intend to help, which is great, but you're probably the only one who considers 'stumbling-quotes' around each and every name and other normal words as helpful for reading. Additionally to all the other stumbling-*starlets* and uppercase emphasizes etc. too. If used moderately that's true, but stumbling over every second word feels for readers like wandering through a stony creek bed ;-) This would be much smoother already, even with still 1/3 marked words: > However, now, with Mathwiz tweak, the ADOBE PRIMETIME CDM Plugin install DOES solve the problem.

  6. By default, the SSL protocol disabled problem on Windows 95 still persists, however, I noticed that coping NSS related files from Retrozilla, or K-Meleon fixes the SSL protocol disabled problem. If anyone wants a list of the files I copied, I will post back.

  10. Roytam's recent resurrection: K-Meleon 1.5.4 with TLS 1.2! (era Firefox2, for vanilla 98) First build 2019-12-25 (page 37): https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/?do=findComment&comment=1175258 most of GRE components are replaced with Retrozilla-based build (but not all) Update 2020-01-08 (page 43): https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/?do=findComment&comment=1175918 archive updated with sha256 and sha384 support. Download: http://o.rths.ml/gpc/files1.rt/K-Meleon1.5.4en-US.tls12.7z KM-Forum for this build: http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?22,151512 ------------ Note for K-Meleon 1.6: Anyone using this for real on Win98 (needs KernelEx), and would like to get back read access for wikipedia, twitter etc. too? You can PARTLY upgrade it by "Do-It-Yourself" ;-) Have played around with this, using blind trial&error method by just copying over some files from KMzilla154 (as I call it). At first it seemed too good to be true, all those crucial domains are finally accessible again, for KM1.6 too. But it's rather shaky, only a crutch. Meanwhile have come across some domains which are still blocked in this messy KM1.6, although they do open fine with roytam's expert build KMz154. After a bit more testing, am now suspecting this tweaked KM1.6 can only open the same domains as Opera12.02? For now that's still a huge step forward, for KM to catch up at least with Opera, but if anyone can figure out more that would be great. 11. "RFox MAILNOVA" = RT MailNews Emailer "RFox AURA" = RT BNAV Browser "RFox ELARA" = RT ST55 Browser "RFox CRESCENT" = RT ST52 Browser "RFox CORDELIA" = RT NM28 Browser "RFox IO" = RT AF27 Browser "RFox RIGEL" = RT KM76 Goanna Browser I found another 'hit' for a Browser named 'ECLIPSE' , so I backed off on that name. Also , same problem on 'AURORA' name , so changed to 'AURA' which seems good enough. These names are all somewhat 'Celestial' if you will. 'ELARA' , 'CRESCENT' , 'CORDELIA' , 'IO' have a 'MOON' connection. This above would be my latest list , NOT sure if there are other (more) RT Browsers ??? So , the 'RFox Family' of RT Browsers and Emailers.

  12. Old as WinXP. However, anti-virus databases for version 4.x are still updated daily. And 4.x version loads CPU less than newer versions. I use this version on a netbook with WinXP and an Atom N270 processor. Yes, cool tool.

  13. I learned on page 13 of this thread that Norton is not very popular among the local Windows XP diehards - but if anyone was interested in using Norton on XP, there is no need to resort to a 2002 version. See Norton Maintenance Mode for Windows XP and Windows Vista.

  15. That only happens if you install extended core, since extended kernel doesn't modify ntoskrnl.exe (which contains the boot screens). You can use resource hacker to change it back to the original boot screen, but I keep it as a form of tribute to the guy who made win2k usable for at least 7 years longer than what M$ desired. I prefer to keep the newer MS stuff to a minimum, as it can get quite messy on win2k as it tries to grapple its hook into what it thinks is a newer OS (uninstalling Office 2003 then installing 2007 is a recipe for disaster). Have you looked into Interlink Mail and News from @roytam1? As much as I would like a fully functional Office 2010, I've had a good experience with WPS Office 2016, which tries very hard to copy the UIs and functionality of newer Office releases. It's far above 2003 in that respect (for Word, Excel and PowerPoint equivalents), and about 90-95% of the capability of the real MS Office 2016.

  16. According to theiir main page, taht's not even illegal! https://www.sandboxie.com/ Sophos is excited to announce that we are making Sandboxie a free tool, with plans to transition it to an open source tool. This new evolution of Sandboxie is one we are enthusiastic about, but that does not mean this was an easy decision to make. Sandboxie has never been a significant component of Sophos’ business, and we have been exploring options for its future for a while. Frankly, the easiest and least costly decision for Sophos would have been to simply end of life Sandboxie. However, we love the technology too much to see it fade away. More importantly, we love the Sandboxie community too much to do that. The Sandboxie user base represents some of the most passionate, forward thinking, and knowledgeable members of the security community and we didn’t want to let you down. After thoughtful consideration we decided that the best way to keep Sandboxie going was to give it back to its users – transitioning it to an open source tool. We will release more information about the open source project as we continue to work on the details. Until the open source transition is completed we have decided to make all restricted features of Sandboxie completely free.

  17. A word of caution about Avast: https://textslashplain.com/2019/08/11/spying-on-https/ TL;DR: Avast uses an obscure feature of Chrome and Firefox, an environment variable called SSLKEYLOGFILE, to spy on https: traffic. Using Process Explorer, I confirmed that it also does this on XP with Advanced Chrome and Firefox 52.9. Note: it does not appear to do this with New Moon or Serpent. It probably looks at the name of the .exe; basilisk.exe is probably too obscure, and it wouldn't surprise me if MCP removed this support from Palemoon.exe (and hence New Moon), since it could obviously be easily abused. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The whole idea of AV software is to scan everything coming into your PC for malware, so scanning https: traffic could just be Avast doing its job. However, the article's postscript is cause for concern: But if you think about it, what else would you expect? Avast itself is free; they have to make money somehow....

  18. ... Maybe not officially, but it has already been reported as running fine there: KFA2019 = v19.0.0.1088 As pointed out already, both KFA2018 & KFA2019 require .NET FW 4.0 on XP... FWIW, there isn't going to be a KFA2020 version, the free product has been rebranded as "Kaspersky Security Cloud - Free" recently: https://www.kaspersky.com/free-cloud-antivirus https://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/thank-you/try-free-cloud-antivirus It also doesn't support XP officially; any brave person here with a curiosity to test it on XP?
