  1. Ivo Belchev's Classic Shell can be used again in Insider Builds 18204, and 17723. I think it is great news for those that dislike the current metro interface.

  2. Thank you for fixing it for older OSes (especially Vista)! Added to the list. You can link to its Sourceforge page now. The author accepted my modifications and the program is now at version 2.1.5.1.

  4. Your dedication and hard work are much appreciated WinClient5270! AntiVirus & Security Software: Avast has given advance notice of their intention to end support: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.0 Two more brands that ended support last year are F-Secure (https://community.f-secure.com/t5/F-Secure-SAFE/End-of-Windows-Vista-support-for/ta-p/92278) and Immunet (http://support.immunet.com/topic/3311-new-release-immunet-600602604606/). As @Ruan once pointed out (in a post that was lost to the server crash of early June), certain Server 2008 patches are incompatible with Sandboxie (https://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=25590). Microsoft Security Essentials 4.4.304.0 predates the EOL "time bomb" and still works on Vista according to @Jody Thornton, but would have to be downloaded from a third party such as FileHippo.

  5. I've been delving into the world of Windows 8.0 hotfixes, which basically are updates that fix very specific issues that Microsoft didn't issue in Windows Update, that got released in the timeframe of 8.0's release up until the beggining of 2016, and I discovered a very interesting one: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2929742 Lol, gramatical error on a KB article Anyway, if you apply this hotfix and put a registry key that they describe in the article you could reenable verbose BSOD just like in Windows 7 and earlier! This hotfix also exists for 8.1, but got bundled in a security update that was released in Windows Update, so everybody running 8.1 already has this possibility.

  6. From December 2018, I will no longer be a beta-tester. As result, I have not been included in the talks about the development of Avast 2019, but Avast 2018 will be the latest version supported by Windows XP. Avast 2018 will receive security updates and bug-fixes, but XP users won't get the chance to upgrade to Avast 2019 and future versions. Which means that, even though Avast is an already really complete Antivirus, new features won't be included in the XP version. This is not something new, as all the older version of Avast still receive security updates, that's why Windows 98 users can still install Avast and get definitions updates on a former version of the Antivirus. The XP beta program is gonna end soon and the 18.x.x is gonna reach a stable version soon and will be updated to fix all the bug. The same applies to Vista.

  7. I didn't know that registry setting wasn't present in the OS initially. So it's a hotfix for a removed feature, not something broken by accident. BTW, Winaero Tweaker has the option to toggle that registry setting. The crash parameters are output with a small font on the upper-left portion of screen. Windows 7 puts it right next to the error code. It's much easily readable on Windows 7 and earlier. So typical problem of inefficient screen space utilization from Metro/UWP world finds itself on the BSOD as well.

  8. - Avast AV - Comodo FW v5.12 (used to use OnlineArmor which was excellent but it had a glitch on my new XP build) - SAS v5.6 & Malwarebytes v1.75 - NoScript browser addon - Windscribe VPN browser add-on (which also has a rotating user agent feature) and hides your system in the crowd (see browserleaks & panopitclick) Obviously nothing can beat safe browsing as has already been stated ie which site you go on and what you download The rise of audio fingerprinting is a concern...... Good Luck

  11. Hi all. Sorry for the inactivity here lately, I've had a lot going on IRL lately and haven't had time to update the list until now. Thank you for fixing it for older OSes (especially Vista)! Added to the list. Thanks for another detailed & informative post as usual, VistaLover Unfortunately this comes at no surprise to me as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware dropped support for Windows Vista (and XP) not too long ago, see here: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/191650-malwarebytes-3-frequently-asked-questions/?tab=comments#comment-1243649 I'd say it's only a matter of time before the rest of Malwarebytes' software (such as Chameleon) drops support as well Thanks! Added to the list
