Removing Both Media Players + Codecs...

Ok folks, been a while since I posted in here, so I'm hoping this one will help alot of people out.

It's not a permanant solution but for me this has worked a charm:

I recently discovered a Firefox extenstion which, when configured correctly will open up ANY type of media stream (including WMV), in your default media player (Which can easily be configured).

I went to big-boys.com with this plugin enabled and normally, you'd just be left there with a blank page or a box saying 'download plugin' even with the WMLite packages (or at least in my experience), but with this new extension, the page will load up, and you'll have a black box with a couple of controls, and if you set it up right during installation, your media player will automatically load up and stream the video. Sure it isn't embedded into the page, but hey, youre actually getting the media this time around eh?

I feel this is a very convenient little package and I recommend you all to try it out if you're having streaming problems under Firefox

Anyway, you can find the extension at https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=446

That unfortunately is correct, and since the only problem is with .wmv files it does seem like a bit of a carry on.

I suppose its up to you which you prefer, but I just thought that might come in handy for some.

Hello, back from holiday.

2.

I can play Realstreams in my browser... but no RAM and no RM (only the audio plays) playback in MPC.

the errors I get:

RAM: Cannot Render the file

I think it is mpc problem.

In MPC try to put .rm .ram .ra in Real Script File (see attachement) not to use RealMedia & RealAudio file(DirectShow) but RealMedia

Is it working?

If not can you give me sample of playback that doesn't work?

OK not all is working yet, 2 bugs:

1.

Can play all Windows Media streams in the browser, can play WM in MPC, but:

cannot click links (with Firefox) containing .wmv files, will get a blank page (no downloading).

Try for example the links on the bottom of this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...ang=en#filelist

These are ASPX links?

Normal links like www.google.com/blabla/blalbla/movie.wmv do work.

Your system internal WMP protocoll settings are corrupt in any way.

If you use MPC you must have the correct WMP system settings.

(MPC ->MediaPlayerClassic; WMP -> WindowsMediaPlayer)

cu web

It works here with Opera 8.02 / FF .

Maybe this will help all who have removed all WMP versions from their install: the above URL takes you to the Media Pack Windows XP N-KB886540 which is explained here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/legal/eudecision/faq.asp.

The quick description:

Installation of the Media Pack will ensure that software programs and Web sites that rely on Windows files not included in Windows XP N-the one stripped of all WMP for Europe-will function properly.

my system internal WMP protocol? Could you give some more info about that?

How can it be corrupt if I removed wmp+codecs and didn't modify anything?

Anyway, I am waiting for the Dutch version of RVM 1.3.1 (will be released this week I think), will create a new Nlited windows...last one I used was version .99 or so..

will test again... haven't tried the realmedia solutions yet... but I thought I wasn't the only one with that problem.

installing a pack for Windows N... well..I don't like that... ttpack should be enough... these minor bugs aren't worth installing something else.. and if Web doesn't have the .wmv problem neither should I :) I will create a new Nlited windows and test.

try to change this in your mpc setting file. your ram sample is working well with the modification but not without.

Real Media file=rmvb rpm \0
Real Script file=rt rp smi smil rm ram \1

This trick works, thanks!

Above problem remains for Firefox... just get a blank page... mpc is not even started so it can't be mpc in this case.

Must be some problem with firefox or the plugin... but Web reported he didn't have the problem.. not sure if he also tested the link above.

Annoying thing is, I have to use IE to download the file, and play it. Can't even force Firefox to just download it.

Same problem here. Any fixes?

Edit: I spoke too soon. I was reluctant to install the WM10lite pack because of this problem on my old nLited system, but I went ahead anyway and apparantly the problem is gone now.

Edit2: Wee.. spoke too soon again. The problem only appears after copying the plugins and components from here to their respective directories in Firefox's directory.

it seems Real isn't complete also...

lots of sites with embedded material report I have no or old realplayer.

about:plugins shows I might only have real for audio?:

RealPlayer G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In (32-bit)

Filename: nppl3260.dll

RealPlayer LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In

MIME Type | Description | Extensions | Active

audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin | RealPlayer as Plug-in | ra,ram,rm,rpm | Yes

real.com reports no or old player..

EDIT1:

I discovered the same thing as Todd, if I remove npdsplay.dll from Firefox\Plugins, it asks to download the .wmv files.

But ofcourse then embedded wmv doesn't work anymore

EDIT2:

I really don't understand any of these problems anymore... now the modification tituo2k gave me, only gives me audio, no video (it worked before!):

try to change this in your mpc setting file. your ram sample is working well with the modification but not without.

Real Media file=rmvb rpm \0
Real Script file=rt rp smi smil rm ram \1

http://service.real.com/realplayer/test/

EDIT3:

After deleting my mplayerc.ini settings file, starting mpc, selected to store settings in an ini file so a new ini file is created, then closed mpc, opened the ini file (there was no info about Real anymore) adding the 2 lines in the code above, I do see the video as well.

so something must be wrong with my ini.

I found out both Webbs ini as Titou2k ini work:

webbs:

Real Media file=rm ram rpm rmm \1

Real Audio file=ra \1

Real Script file=rt rp smi smil \1

titou2k:

Real Media file=rmvb rpm \0

Real Script file=rt rp smi smil rm ram \1

what do the \1 mean? wich one should be best?

btw in MPC, Options>Playback>Output: Directshow Video, Realmedia Video, Quicktime Video, I had all three of these on VMR9 Renderless and DirectX9.

I found out Real video wont be played this way, for Realmedia Video System Default should be selected!

sorry for the long post, to make it short, I now only have the .wmv problem. The Real plugin thing mentioned in the start is not a big thing...

I discovered a fix here. Now About:Plugins should report like this:

modded.png

But they also say Real Alternative 1.32 and higher already include this fixed plugin... seems not to be in the rar archive on titou2k website.
