How many will continue using XP?

    I liked Q4OS as well (very XP-like)

How many will continue using XP?

I see those win10 lookalikes and raise you Q4OS + XPQ4. https://q4os.org/index.html https://xpq4.sourceforge.io/ In Live CD form dumped onto a USB on a ThinkPad T60 it's not much less snappier than server 2003 on the TP's SSD.

Server 2012 Updates on Windows 8

Crap! I was really hoping someone would pull an Easter miracle and make IE 11 install on to Windows 8. But here's what I REALLY wanted. In a perfect world, I would have upgraded IE10 to IE11, and then removed Internet Explorer from Add/Remove Programs. As it stand right now, I still have Internet Explorer libraries and DLLs on my system since they are used by other applications. Would I be able to replace those files with ones from IE 11 for Server 2012? Thanks again greenhillmaniac. You really help shed some light on this stuff. :)

Missing email client in the Start Menu.

Hi, the bug you report prevents selection. But now the selection is possible both for browsers and for email clients. The problem now is that Interlink MailNews is missing in the email clients to select. While this does not occur in browsers.

  8. Yes, I was very busy with work last months. From next week, I will return to work at the project :)

    Win 7, no USB drivers

Yeah, I've already installed them, as I said above. It's the USB2 drivers that are AWOL. The X230 has two USB2 ports and one USB3 port. The "properties" open in the screencap are for a USB2 port. There are drivers for the USB3, but it doesn't detect anything I plug into it. Maybe they aren't independent of the USB2 drivers. I asked someone with the same model and OS to check, they have these drivers: USB Serial Bus Controllers (2x) Generic USB Hub - MS 6/21/2006 V: 6.1.7601.21832 (2x) Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset family USB enhanced host controller - 1E26 (and 1E2d) - Intel 8/26/2011 V: 9.3.0.1011 Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host controller - Intel 2/27/2012 V: 1.0.4.220 Intel USB 3.0 Root Hub - Intel 2/27/2012 V: 1.0.4.220 USB Composite Device - MS 6/21/2006 V: 6.1.7601.21832 (2x) USB Root Hub - MS 6/21/2006 V: 6.1.7601.17701 I.e., MS drivers. I don't know why they aren't in my device manager. Presumably they are on my disk-- any idea what the filenames are? What directory they should be in so I can try to point "update" to them. Or do I need Windows install media? When I search the disk for "USB" I see a lot of system files like : amd64_microsoft-windows-usbui_..... But the mobo is intel. Is that the problem?
  10. I have spent time collecting all my Windows XP SP3 + IE8 + Posready + Office 2003 + compatibility 2007/2010 + All Frameworks updates. I have used as a personal guide the update history of microsoft update giving it to print in pdf file. I have downloaded almost all of the Microsoft update catalog and some of Google. The few missing ones have been deleted from the catalog by obsolete or replaced. I have ordered them by installation date.
  11. glad to hear from you again!
  12. It starts also on nt 4.0 with my kernelex, even if the graphic is buggy.

    Windows NT 4.0 api wrapper

Yes, it is. Sorry to be late, I have not worked much at this project in these few months because of busy life, but from next week I will work on it again. Here is a screenshot of working basilisk from roytam (released yesterday). The graphic is really buggy as you can see, I need to work on it... But at least, it starts... I'm trying to get also chrome to work. I'm evaluating to use user32 and gdi32 and win32k from the first betas of nt5.0 because they have all the updated functions to display text, styles correctly, but it seems that we need to use also the ntoskrnl from that beta because the the old ntoskrnl from nt 4.0 is too old, and here is a question for you users... Do you mind if we use the new ntoskrnl.exe from a earlier beta of nt 5.0? I ask you this because I want your opinion about this. If you say no, I will keep working with the nt 4.0's ones, but it will takes some more time.

Server 2012 Updates on Windows 8

The Easter bunny hasn't forgotten about our favorite NT 6.2 OS: Replaced Monthly Rollup with the new KB4493451 (located on the root directory of the repository) Replaced Flash Player Security update with KB4493478 (located on the root directory of the repository) Added Security Only Updates, KB4489884 and KB4493450 (located in the folder "/Security Only (Post September 2016)") Replaced Internet Explorer Cumulative Update with KB4493435 (located in the folder "/Security Only (Post September 2016)") Added .NET Framework September Security Only Updates: -KB4488660 for .NET 3.5 SP1 (located in "/.NET Framework 3.5 Updates") -KB4488668 for .NET 4.5.2 (located in "/.NET Framework 4.5.2 Updates") -KB4488664 for .NET 4.6.x-4.7.x (located in "/.NET Framework 4.6.x-4.7.x Updates") Added extra update KB4490128 (located in "/Extras (Non Security Updates)") The sad news of the month is that IE11 is not Windows 8.0 compatible. I tried extracting the MSU package and even the CAB file, but analyzing the update.mum I noticed that they only included support for Server 2012 and Embedded: <parent> <assemblyIdentity name="Microsoft-Windows-ServerCore-Package" version="6.2.9200.16384" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" buildType="release"></assemblyIdentity> <assemblyIdentity name="Microsoft-Windows-Embedded-SKU-Foundation-Package" version="6.2.9200.16384" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" buildType="release"></assemblyIdentity> </parent> Which means Internet Explorer 10 will only have security updates until the beginning of 2020. I would suggest doing what @Jody Thornton's been doing and disabling IE10 altogether from the "Windows Features" function when the time comes. As for everything else, the .NET updates are only for adding support for the new Japanese calendar and the new timezone update does not replace previous timezone updates. https://mega.nz/#F!ExhDEbDA!pUhzXKVp5-hgzvylW_btfQ

Not that Gnome classic is in any way pleasant to the eye. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder still, after all these years, I still cringe at the general ugliness and clumsyness of *most* Gnome desktops (*any* version) looks, IMHO KDE is way better. Anyway, most probably the best candidate for an XP->Linux transition is -still IMHO - Zorin OS (Gnome based): https://zorinos.com/ or Netrunner (KDE based): https://www.netrunner.com/ jaclaz

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista

Happy Easter, everybody! I am the Easter bunny bringing my Easter eggs: Replaced Monthly Rollup with the new KB4493471 (located on the root directory of the repository) Added a new Servicing Stack update KB4493730 (located on the root directory of the repository) Added Security Only Updates, KB4489876 and KB4493458 (located in the folder "/Security Only (Post August 2018)") Replaced Internet Explorer Cumulative Update with KB4493435 (located in the folder "/Security Only (Post August 2018)") Added .NET Updates: -KB4488661 for .NET 2.0 SP2 (located in "/NET 2.0 SP2") -KB4488669 for .NET 4.5.2 (located in "/NET 4.5.2") -KB4488666 for .NET 4.6-4.6.1 (located in "/NET 4.6-4.6.1") Added Extra updates KB4490128 (located in "/Extras") with an updated readme file A few notes, as usual: the build number bump is certainly an interesting phenomenon, but sadly an uneventful one (it should've been a new Service Pack). The new Servicing Stack update was released to support SHA2 signing of updates, but no accompanying update (just as a reminder, Windows 7 had both the SS and an additional update). The .NET updates are not Rollups or Security Only, but simply standalones to add support for the new Japanese Calendar, so there's no real need to apply them if you live outside The Land Of The Rising Sun . Lastly, for some reason the new timezone update KB4490128 does not supersede the old timezone updates in the Catalog, so I added it to the Extras folder instead of replacing the older ones with it. https://mega.nz/#F!txxRyLzC!1vBMGzMHiL864f3bl1Rj1w

    Win 7, no USB drivers

Windows 7 does not have "built-in" USB 3.0 drivers. Depending on the actual chipset they may (or may not) exist for your machine/chipset. In your case you seem like lucky, Looky here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/hk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x230/downloads/ds034760 jaclaz

Compared to abundant software we have less freedom in choosing hardware, even less in cellphone. I, too, using Xiaomi, mainly for its price, yet I enter into its all levels of configuration menus to disable all ads and spy-like functions as many as I can , do not use its pre-installed apps, limit network connections by default, change system language to English (This will make some chinese apps treat you more respectfully, which is a shame), and still, take it for granted that anything on my phone may be collected somewhere in a database within china. IMO cellphone is not a proper platform for serious security and privacy.

    taskbar icon size

is there any way to add more options or flexibility to the taskbar icon size setting - the 4 settings are great but i find the difference between the 2 i use - small and medium too big - one in the middle of those 2 would be ideal - so is it possible to do it by pixel size or a slider to increase the size i am assuming its a registry setting but finding it is not something i have a clue how to do - or maybe its done in some other way

Missing email client in the Start Menu.

I think it may have something to do with this: I guess it was only partially fixed. I remember reading something more recent (2018) which indicated that such issues persisted but can't put my finger on that particular post.

Windows 98 as high quality video player

I tried SMPlayer 0.8.3.0 with KernelEx v19. It only works properly with base enhancements + api fixes opposed to using XP and later. Unfortunately, an MP4 video only appeared the first time the program opened...and it was only a small square that would not expand to the whole player. Audio worked fine though. Could you provide a link to UMPlayer 0.95? I can only find 0.98 portable for Windows. If there are any honorable mentions, please say so. This is a bit off topic, but how did you manage to get Slimboat Portable working on 9x?
