Will publish a customized MSE Updater, but this means that the mpengine.dll would remain at the state of version 1.1.15800.1. A test with the Eicar test virus has been positive with the most recent virus definition. In how far this will affect more recent virus definitions in the future, I can not foresee. The fact is that in future vulnerabilities or functional extensions in the file mpengine.dll no update is possible. There are still some tests needed in the next few hours and if they go well I will publish the updated MSE Updater.

    StartIsBack++ 2.8

You may create "NoTaskbarSkin"=(DWORD)1 value in HKCU\Software\StartIsBack. This may break off some functionality though.
  5. Chrome was just got updated to version 74 and appears to no longer support native W10 title bars (and the AeroGlass effect). The #windows10-custom-titlebar flag is also no longer available along with the ability to 'Disable' it. Does anyone know of an alternative/workaround to re-enable AeroGlass support for the new Chrome 74 title bars?

  7. None. Why don't you actually try it, instead of asking?
  8. Just to confirm what we already know, I noticed this in my Windows System event log from my earlier attempts to use the later engine file - Microsoft Antimalware has encountered an error trying to load signatures and will attempt reverting back to a known-good set of signatures. Signatures Attempted: Current Error Code: 0x800700c1 Error description: Microsoft Antimalware is not a valid Win32 application. Signature version: 1.293.45.0;1.293.45.0 Engine version: 1.1.15900.4 And - Microsoft Antimalware has encountered an error trying to update the engine. New Engine Version: 1.1.15900.4 Previous Engine Version: 1.1.15800.1 Engine Type: Antimalware User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Error Code: 0x8007007f Error description: The specified procedure could not be found.
  9. Got a question. Do you have any idea if serpent will run under WINE using XP/Win7 emulation? Being a WinXP program it should run without problems right? Tried the linux port of Basilisk and really don't care for it.

How so? What do you think this very thread is all about? So long as there are working virus definitions, the rest's just fireworks.

I used to use ClamWin. It wasn't bad; my only complaint was, it's only an on-demand scanner (like MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware Free). So you have to schedule a scan every day, and there's still a chance malware could get into your system and do a lot of damage before the scan caught it. I think MSE is one of only a few free real-time AV products left for XP. That's why we're jumping through hoops trying to keep it alive. There have been occasional outages before, and IIRC it takes 3 days before the systray icon turns yellow. So you could update every other day and never see the yellow icon.
  12. It should be "true." However, with FF 52, it won't do anything unless you add some custom Javascript:
  13. Microsoft Security Essentials( MSE) for Winxp: No more updateS since quite a long time. Only free solution: Clamwin. The addon-Software Clamsentinel i removed since too much false positive. one must adjust this. e.g.. irfanview plugins a lot of them were blocked! So remove MSE and install Clamwin. At least true for Winxp SSE. What is working on Winxp SSE2 i cannot answer now since other PC must be setup again.

More than one day for sure, but I don't remember just now for how many days... that's documented somewhere, though, if MS didn't take it down, yet.

how long is it before MSE will complain IDE's are out of date before needing a update again could we say leave it 2-3 or even 4 days ?
  16. general.useragent.site_specific_overrides is set to "true" here.
  17. Of course the danger is that eventually MSE will stop working again because the engine will be deemed to be too out of date!

hopefully we won't have to rely on the engine, if the update def files works and MSE scans ok and well

No. It's not just maybe. Here're some facts... This is the ominous line in dependency walker: Notice it's an error, not a warning. Moreover, it appears for 1.1.15900.4, but not for 1.1.15800.1 or any other previous version of mpengine.dll (I've tested two more, but that should be enough, in this case). So, MS's attempt to kill XP through MSE lies on the mpengine.dll... That's good news! I count on @heinoganda kindly creating an automated updater, from these findings, as soon as he finds time for it, of course!

It keeps the old definitions in a "backup" folder, I guess in case the update turns out to be corrupt. I kinda figured the new engine wouldn't work. But I guess it's smart enough to restore the backups when it blows up. (Of course, it'd be just like M$ to read this thread and decide to change the format of the definitions files, along with yet another incompatible mpengine.dll which would be required to read them. They seem to be doing everything in their power to kill off XP.)

at least for now we have a work around for now. so it seems it "just maybe" it's the engine that is causing problems
  23. I tried copying the engine version from my Windows 10 installation, which is version 1.1.15900.4, to the MSE folder, and what happened was that when MSE restarted, it restored the original version, and the old definition files! When I just replace the definition files it seems to be fine, so beware trying to update the engine version!
  24. Mathwiz

Microsoft security essentials and Windows XP

Excellent! That's a better procedure too, because it also updates the "Definitions Last Updated" date.

Microsoft security essentials and Windows XP

Please do notice I didn't add the new mpengine.dll to the "...\Microsoft Antimalware\Definition Updates\Updates" folder, nor tried to replace the engine by any othe methods, because it seems to have an unsatisfied dependency on advapi32.dll. So it remains using the 1.1.15800.1 mpengine.dll... I've just run a quick scan and it's behaving normally.

I confirm it works: 1.) stop MS Antimalware Service ; 2.) put the 4 .vdm files in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Definition Updates\Updates"; 3.) restart MS Antimalware Service; MSE updates and the "...\Microsoft Antimalware\Definition Updates\Updates" becomes empty. Great work, folks! Y'all rock!

How many will continue using XP?

I believe there are add-ons that will let you customize your UA according to the Web site. (I know they exist for Firefox.) You could then send 51.0.2704.63 to YouTube without affecting anyone else.
