MSFN has been de-indexed and its search results removed from Google, Bing, and all other search engines which depend on them, as, for example, DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Ecosia, Qwant, eTools.ch, yahoo!, and so on. I call them Google's and Bing's slave machines. I am @AstroSkipper and located in Germany, and here are some screenshots to show you what I mean:



No relevant search results regarding MSFN. All that means MSFN is now stuck in the digital gulag starting with Google's Core Updates on 21 May 2026. And here a screenshot from Google Search with the search term "msfn.org":



Here you can clearly see that Google considers MSFN a spammer as sites with domain msfn.org are shown in Thai or Siamese language. Now, my question to all members of MSFN:

Are you also affected?

Please post screenshots of search results with the search term "MSFN Windows XP" for exact comparison! Or alternatively, state in a clear sentence which country you are from and whether you are affected or not!

We need information from all countries to see if there is a real problem and to report it then to the site owner/administrator @xper and supervisor @Tripredacus. And one thing is crystal clear: Nihil semper ad nihilum!

There appears to be an empty placeholder for the country flag, as one can see when hovering over the "place" the flag should've been displayed, but the actual flag is MIA  ; could this issue be looked into, please?

PS1: In my account settings, I have chosen to always view members' country flags (if available) ...

So basically from what I can see we have 4 problems right now:

1. A forum hack that as a result de-indexed MSFN from search results
2. Spam accounts that lead to registration block
3. Lack of donations to pay for Invision software
4. Lack of maintenance

#1 and #2 are the most important ones right now and it may very well be that due to lack of maintenance the forum remained at old software versions which is much worse for servers than it is for client devices. And eventually got hacked. Cleaning the malware is one thing and securing the software so that the vulnerabilities aren't there anymore is another and I think it may actually be easier to just redo the forum board from the ground-up. A fresh board can be brought to life with just a few hours.

But I think it's important to keep MSFN alive due to the incredible amount of useful info already there, the fact that there is no forum quite like it: eclipse.cx and legacydev.org suffer from dramas causing a large portion of users not being reachable on one or the other and a lot of the actual software development happens here (especially drivers nowadays). And MSFN is a really active forum for the technical state that it's currently in.

Now what IMO has to be done:

1. Archive everything as it is
2. Put up a fresh install of a free forum software like phpBB
3. Transfer users (with more than 0 posts) and emails so that they can redo their password using email verification on the new board
4. Strip the old forum of any javascript/php code to clear malware and put it in read only mode somewhere like archived.msfn.org
5. Maybe transfer the contents of some of the most active topics.
6. Consider giving some maintenance access to most trusted forum admins so that the software gets properly updated

And there you go, it requires some work, but problems solved, if a change like this happens I promise to donate to the forum and I'm sure many users would do the same, I think they just don't really want to donate right now due to lack of maintenance happening anyway. And phpBB unlike invision is free!

A "display name" change should technically not require manual handling, and be editable at will, within profile settings or account settings. I think you will find this kind of setup on sites like Disqus and many other sites that have a "display name". I believe all Discourse based forums have this, and they may have even coined the term "display name". Are our display names on MSFN in fact our usernames? Usernames are required to be unique. That's not a requirement for what other sites refer to as display names.

Also, "Member" is now written two times.

In both cases I got code 403 forbidden.

In the remote case the user (Bacho) happens to read this (there is nothing personal in the message, he was asking about an issue he has with booting an XP installation booting only from a USB stick and failing when the USB stick is removed), the reply would have been:

The thread is about a standard installation, if you have a particular install (not on C:\ drive or anyway in a logical volume inside extended, the contents of BOOT.INI needs to be changed accordingly).

After the usual zillion tests, it is not the known BOOT.INI issue alone, it is the link to the other thread in the form of a preview that triggers the behaviour, the text only link allows it BUT this worked on this post (the 4.3 word is present alright), but not on the PM, where I had to remove all occurrences .
