Especially of interest is newer hardware that supports or still supports Win9x.

Please start by including hardware you have on your system that you can confirm works with Win9x.

HARD DISKS:

Windows 95 supports FAT16.

Windows 95B / 98 / 98SE / Me supports FAT16 and FAT32

Win95 can NOT support hard drives bigger than 32 gig

FAT16 supports drive partitions up to 2 GB.

Win9x's FAT32 can be used on any hard drive larger than 512MB and supports hard disks up to 137 GB in size. To use bigger hard disks the system requires a system update. (See Below)

Windows 9x natively supports ATA IDE Hard Disk Drives. SCSI, SATA and RAID disk drives are supported through third party drivers.

Large Hard Disk Support

Windows 98 and Me do not natively support 48-bit LBA drives larger than 137 GB.

This means:

- If you have a hard disk larger than 137GB... and Windows trys to save data onto that disk past the 137GB barrier, data corruption (loss of files) is likely to occur.

- It doesn't matter if you partition the hard disk into smaller partitions, all partitions above the hard disks physical 137GB barrier will be affected.

- If you put a single partition on the hard disk using fdisk or alternative, and its less than 137GB (UNDER 128GB is recommended as safe) you will be fine (Just Don't allocate the remainder of the disk). But if you want to use the rest of the disk you must use a work around.

Work Arounds:

LLXX's Enable48BitLBA - Implements 48-bit LBA support into Windows 95/98/98SE and ME's default IDE driver.

Windows 98 - get the 4.10.2186 driver

Windows 98 Second Edition - most users should get the 4.10.2225 driver. If you have a old IBM laptop you may have to get 4.10.2226

Windows Me - get the 4.90.3000 driver

- create a primary partition on that drive (smaller than 128GB), using fdisk

- install win9x on that partition

- install drivers

- install the suitable LLXXs patch

- fill the rest of the disk with new partitions. (Keep them under 128GB if you still wish to use Scandisk and Defrag)

Partition Size Limits

The size of individual Partitions are subject to additional limitations due to FileSystem design and Partition management tools. Microsoft specifies a maximum Partition size of 128GB. Third Party Partition Management tools may have other limits.

DEFRAG and SCANDISK (in Windows Mode) are limited to less than 136.9GB Some people have reported limits as low as 127GB.

To disable ScanDisk from running after a bad shutdown in Windows 98 or Me:

1. Click on Start->Run

2. Enter "MSCONFIG"

3. On the General tab, click on the Advanced button.

4. Enable the checkbox "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown"

5. Click on OK to exit the advanced settings

6. Click on OK to exit MSCONFIG.

DOS, WINDOWS and SCANDISK (in DOS Mode) can handle at least 400GB.

WARNING: Diskeeper 10 claims to support Partitions up to 768GB and Windows 98/SE/ME. Tests show that it can corrupt large Partitions.

It is recommended that you Partition your Large Hard Drive with 2 or more Partitions so that no single Primary or Logical Partition is larger than 127GB.

FDISK can be used to Partition Large Hard Drives but will incorrectly report sizes above 64GB. You will need to enter sizes as Percentages in order to use the full capacity of the Hard Drive.

OPTICAL DISK DRIVES:

Windows 9x natively supports IDE optical drives without additional drivers.

This includes CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD Dual Layer drives.

FLOPPY DISK DRIVES

Windows 9x natively supports internal Floppy Disk Drives.

i don't seem to find the threads where the use/installation of dos-LAN-drivers during installation, but, more importanly, AFTER installation of w98se is described in detail.

Could anyone who successfully DID that, put a link to threads with some kind of HOWTO here, as well maybe notify the keeper of some stickyfied "important link" section?

If there exists no such thing: It is sought after by ruthan and me. Any help would be appreciated.

REMARKS.

This first post only included initially the Windows 98 cloning.

All paragraphs concerning Windows XP have been created later in succesive editions of the original text by choosing, collecting, resuming and putting together many ideas suggested by other members in this thread.

That's why you may find more extensive details about all this all along the following posts in the words of their authors and contributors. You may also find their excellent explanations of the theory of it all and other alternative ways. I have only resumed here my own experience in the search for the easiest path, in the wish of being useful to other members or visitors of this forum.

Thanks to jaclaz, dencorso and all other members for their ideas! I have learnt a lot: without their contribution I would never have reached to do this.

Summary:

i had to solve the problem, that there are never enough PCI slots on interesting boards.

This is now solved by using PCI-to-PCIe-adapters, with great success!!!

Long Story:

I now own this AM4-board:

It has two SLI-enabled PCIe-slots for the dual-GPU-stunt (this is necessary, as it is too expensive to NOT Dual-Boot with W10 or Linux).

It has PS/2-ports for mouse and keyboard, which, as RLoew will tell you as well, is very convenient.

It has some PCIe-slots with good Placement.

A lot of bells and whistles, but for the moment i ignore that... (RGB looks nice...)

So, what i needed, were TWO PCI-slots, one for a PCI-SATA-controller with W98SE-support, and one for a card like the SB Audigy PCI.

First, i bought this PCI to PCIe Adapter:

I installed it on the first PCIe-slot, and connected it to power (had to buy some sata-to-molex-adapter - prepare for ugly wiring...).

Then, i got out my SATA-controller with VIA VT6421(A) chipset, which, fortunately, is low profile:

I removed the slot-metal, put the controller into the adapter (can't fix the card, but the PCI-slot seems to hold just good enough), connected a SATA II SSD, and tested with Ubuntu Gnome 17.04, and Windows 10 Pro 64bit 17.03.

Works! I can boot any OS from that Controller (at least W10 and Ubuntu)!

Then i bought another one, and put in the Soundblaster Audigy Player ("Gamer") PCI.

Sound on W10 and Ubuntu! Works!

The full-height Audigy Player sits in the machine in an elevated way (Fixation-Point 3 cm above the screw-hole, which is a lot), so i still have to think about some way to secure it. Dencorso hinted at a nice Adapter in the next post, which i bought immediately, but unfortunately, you need a reeeeeeally big Tower, to be able to use it... 

But the all-important audio-out sits still below the Fixation-Point. Hey, lucky! 

So, from now on, missing PCI-Slots for important add-in cards is not a (big) problem any more, as long as there are enough and well-positioned PCIe-1x-slots.

(What does NOT work yet, is installing w98se on this AM4-board - i'm working on it - but that's another story... it does not look good at the moment... )

Welcome to the updated modern motherboards that are working with Windows 98 information thread. Most of these boards are now considered legacy due to their age, but are still very modern to Windows 98 standards and most will use either Core2 or Athlon 64 processors. Most of these boards however, despite having onboard video and audio, may require the use of compatible addon cards due to Windows 98 not being able to address HD audio at all and most Intel video no longer works with Windows 98.

IMPORTANT: A common problem on most boards of this age is Windows 98 having a problem using ACPI so in order to install Windows 98 without having these issues is to use switches while initiating setup from DOS. When installing, be sure to use "x:\setup /p i" without the quotation marks and x:\ being your installation source drive. This will help issue with hanging during setup or crashes within Windows caused by ACPI.

Also note that in order to use these boards to their full potential, it might be necessary to patch your system to use more than 1GB of RAM. We do recommend Rloew's RAM limitation patch which will then enable Windows 9x/ME to utilize up to 4GBs of memory. Some boards may also require something like Rloew's SATA patch despite being IDE/ATA compatible or even using a legacy IDE drive just because of how the board is set up. To contact @rloew for information on his patches, PM him or visit his site at: http://rloew1.no-ip.com. Those patches, however, are not free.

I have analyzed the ClamWin's source code and I have found where is the problem.

The fix works well and is stable.

For to try this you can to scan with ClamWin the ClamWin update exe setup (only the update not the full install) that it's realized with nullsoft.

The file will locked (no possibility of to deleted it, to move it, to rename it) until the system will be rebooted.

Here the files (the changes on the source code and the binary files):

Open the zip file and renamed the file libclamav.dll located into the folder (clamwin\bin), for example with an extension .original and then save the new file into the same folder.

Of course, just as the original ClamWin, these modified files are released under the GPL, as required.

Note: Have been reported problems using the ClamWin incremental update setup, for to install a new ClamWin version it's better instead to use the full install (and to copy before the file ClamWin.conf for to save your personalizations).
