you probally could have provided more information...
such as it's from Wise, and it's homepage ( http://www.wise.com/installtailor.asp?bhcp=1 ) as well as that MSTs are really better then directly modifying the MSI.

Question:

Is there a tool that extracts the contents of the msi? I saw an article saying that there is a tool from Microsft's Website (part of MSI SDK), but I can't find it, and I'm not sure if it really exists.

ORCA?

7Zip can successfully extract files from some (but not all) .MSI and .MSP files.
Martin Zugec
2Yzowl: This is something different what he wants (extraction can be done even with Total Commander)...
totoymola
ORCA, 7Zip, Total Commander? I'll try them. biggrin.gif

That may be true and I know it's what M$ and all of the installer companies tell you, but there are times when you simply cannot accomplish what you need to do without doing a direct edit. And to be honest, sometimes it's just a lot easier to do a down and dirty msi edit intead of generating a transform. Just keep and original of that msi for backup.

I agree with you. I have had some msis i've dealt with in past which direct editing was the best option.

I mentioned this because its my favorite msi editor and free by the way (at least the editing part).
totoymola
I edit my msi's directly too. For example, WinXP Manager. I have to edit the msi because I have to remove a custom action that scans the NetFramework. If I don't remove that, I will not be able to install it with my unattended installation. I'm not sure if mst's can do that. newwink.gif

1.) I am using AdminStudio... Great, but expensive sad.gif

2.) ORCA is free, but isnt user friendly

3.) MasaiEditor is great, the best is it is free for personal use...

21chaoticadult, RogueSpear: I am trying to use transformations everywhere I can, but U R right, sometimes I am forced to edit msi directly sad.gif

BTW R U using msp (patches) and msm (merge modules)? Specially with msm I am VERY satisfied
